I am confused..............

Nearly always..........

but.......

At what point does a poll become a petition?

Yes, this is a serious question that I feel needs some clarification. :)
When people say to me........
"You're going to regret that in the morning"
I sleep until midday cos I'm a problem solver!

    I second this.
Do you mind? I'm busy doing the fishstick, it's a very delicate state of mind.

Petitions are against their code of conduct so no matter your intent, make sure you only refer to it as a poll.

The difference being, a petition only allows for support of one specific position, whereas a poll allows opposing points to be represented as well.

Mmmm yes but the rules seem to be somewhat 'flexible' :p

The poll/petition I am referencing had three choices.....

So was it a poll or petition?

If it had been an outright demand for something without the option to disagree well yes that is a petition but the option to disagree was offered.........

    #confused :(

If it had choices, it was a poll by definition. In the social sciences, a petition is meant to garner support for one specific position.

    For example:

You would start a petition to get people to agree that: "We should ban cigarette smoking in bars."
    Sign here

You start a poll to ask: "Should we ban cigarette smoking in bars?"
    Chose yes, no or undecided

A poll is something where you ask a question and then give others some choices for their answer and usually includes an "other" option for any answers you missed.

A petition is a demand for change or support for a position/ idea. Petitions typically leave little room for discussion because you aren't giving options or giving others a chance to express an opinion. You are just demanding something be done, supported or changed and then asking others to back you up.

If you wanted your subdivision to add in more stop signs because cars are speeding through the neighborhood, you'd have your neighbors sign a petition to make a change.

If you had to set up an activity for a school fundraiser, you might make a poll to see what the kids wanted to do to raise money.

Here goes getting myself in trouble......

    but what the heck.........

Said thread was closed for being a petition when it clearly was not......

It most definitely offered the option to disagree with the OP.

It was not one of my threads.....

However I'm in a militant mood.....

    I want a Wolfhound!!! :'(

Apparently you can't do petitions, but you can do the same thing and call it a poll. But it's ok, nobody takes polls seriously, so Zenimax isn't worried.
