If you buy the Imperial edition you a the nifty Whiterun Wolfhound. A big [snip] to current subscribers and what does it really mean for the game to be so cheap now?

So why are you posting and I did not see one with the sale price. That is what is more concerning to me.

It means they hit the break even point for the cost to make the game and now the rest is mostly profit.

It means nothing, EVERY game ever made, even console games, drop in price as time goes on. They know the gamers who always like to have a game day one are willing to pay 'full' price, and that the only way to get more sales after the hard core gamers have bought the game is to drop the price, It says NOTHING about the quality of the game.

Had the game been a total flop those prices would have dropped within weeks not months.

Let me guess this is another attempt at suggesting this game should be F2P?

you mean having a game go on sale soon afterwards?

You realize how many games i've bought on sale soon after release?

Hell those damn Batman games are famous for their dropping of prices.

This is an MMO not a stand alone title and even then stand alone titles dont drop like this within the first couple of months. MMOs generally go on sale after an xpac is released. They definitely do not drop in price by 50% a couple of months in. If this was consistently the case what would be the point in buying any game at launch?

It's a sale; a promotion. Also, times are changing. Games DO go on sale/price drop very quickly.

Wolfenstein is 50% right now on GameFly, and that came out a month and a half after ESO. Games go on sale. This is no sign of the end times.

Virtually every MMO released to date goes on sale after the first 2 months...in fact MMO's are more likely to do this because most of the initial buys of a new MMO are during the first month.

It's brand new on Steam. Steam very often has big sale when a game is first released on their platform. Simple as that.

Usually yes, but they are also doing a Quakecon sale. You can look over at the specials and every Zenimax Media game is on sale right now. As Well as some Square Enix produced ones and quite a few others. 10 pages of games and DLC are on sale.

As evidence by the giant thread with people angry that the most asked for pet is only available to people who will be new and there is no way for people who have been loyal and supporting the game since before launch to get one.

Promotions are good, discounting increases sales, and should help increases the player base. Anyone still playing this game knows all too well how the player population has dwindled since shortly after launch. I don't care what it takes to get more people playing this game, give them a free Cadillac for all I care. If they don't generate new interest in the game, who will we sell all these fantastic crafted and dropped gear sets to? It's in everyone's best interest to see successful promotions.

Seriously, they need to evaluate their PR/Marketing department. From things like this and the continued "mistakenly" left off patch notes, clearly shows they need help.

They are looked upon negatively if they do, or if they don't.

I'd suppose the fact of the matter is that the game needs new subs. And this is one way to get them. Sadly, every game I've played has had this sort of marketing issue. You get in on the ground floor, and a few weeks or months later the same package you bought at full price is discounted. The pet thing I've a lot of empathy for. Wouldn't mind having one myself. And I'm not a pet guy. It's just well done I guess.

As for those getting upset about the discount - this is the newish 'normal.' You get your initial subs, then watch the decline in them for a time. Then offer promotions and special offers to get those numbers back up. Eventually you have a steady number to work with.

When I played DDO I bought expansion stuff that cost a good deal of cash. Then discovered it was discounted only a few weeks post release. And yeah, I felt bilked. But then I remembered how much I liked that game at the time, and just got over it. The second expansion was one my guild simply traded for with unbound rare loot. Worked out much better for us overall. No hard feelings at seeing the price get halved a few weeks later.
