While it is obvious that a great deal of time was put into the background music scores, the bards and minstrels are playing the same few tunes. over and over, over and over, over and OVER!!!

Is there any chance the developers could change the songs or at least make hearing them optional? Not everyone has a mute button on their keyboard!

Take 10 steps away from them and the music ends rather abruptly. Most disappointing.

I've said before, they need peppier folk-type tunes. The songs we do hear, the music is kind of mournful. People do like happier, sappier stuff for distraction entertainment in times of trouble more than they do in times of peace.

And it was really sad trying to watch Khajit belly dancers try to do their thing to "Red Diamond", I think it was. They looked like low-rent strippers strung out on too much heroin. Sad. Really sad.*

Note that I don't think the current two songs should be replaced, just .. we need more variety, and stuff that's a little less of a bummer.

Check out the traditionals that modern bands like Steeleye Span and Great Big Sea have done. Or even the Irish Rovers. Or even some rocknroll versions of "Whiskey in the Jar".

*Unless it was really, really meant to look sad, because this is what Skooma does. I thought Skooma was supposed to be more fun than that, though - an upper, not a downer, if you will.

I never got why, in a game like this where updates will be coming for months on end, the devs don't have a bunch of extra dialogue lines and songs made during development that they can roll out as they post updates to keep the game feeling fresh. I mean, I know that these things cost money, but you think it would be easy to have a guy sing an extra song or do a few more lines of dialogue while he's in the studio vs trying to add it later on from scratch. That said, it's too late now, so I guess, sure, I'd love to hear some different songs (and diff songs we play on our instruments as well).

Actually, there's a real problem, with those bards ..

I'm in the Aldmeri dominion, and thus, when I hit the veteran rank, I found myself visiting the Ebonheart's pact's zones.

I heard a bard, there, singing a song about the glory of queen Ayrenn .. shouldn't he be hanged for treason?

I mean, songs seems to be linked to you alliance, and not to the zone you are.

I hear you, some variety would be nice.

But look at the times, major war in Cyrodill, Dark Anchors dropping from the sky, monsters everywhere. Upon entering a new town you are greeted with some derivation of, "Boy, you picked a bad day to come to XXX!" What do these people have to be happy about?

    You adventurer! They have you!

Again, people like happy sappy the best when in times of trouble. In times of peace, we get splatterpunk slasher movies. When a full-blown war is on, we get musicals. During the Cold War, we got Dark Shadows and Twilight Zone. Creepy as hell, but not particularly gory, with secrets that don't get revealed until near the end of a story.

Heppy entertainment is appreciated more when everyone's life is ***. It's detested when people are generally doing well.

Also; those old troubadour songs also doubled as the news, of course. Traveling musicans/performers picked up bits of news, that they would translate into a song/poem, and that's how news was spread before mass media was invented. It constituted the first "infotainment", only in this case, the news was more or less relevant, and not confined to some goofy Ronco product.

I can give you many examples of folk songs with dour content, but rather peppy, upbeat (or at least, not mournful) music.

Great Big Sea/Gone by the Board - by Great Big Sea (Newfoundland traditional, about a hurricane/tsunami that wiped out Long Beach. A very pleasant tune.

Sonny's Dream - by Ron Hynes. Another Newfoundlander; the song is about a son bound by guilt re: his needy mom. A typical coastal song, about the unreliability of sailor husbands, and possible psychological problems passed on from mother to son, in a non-genetic way.

Little Sir Hugh - Steeleye Span. Nice tune, but an old urban legend based on blood libel; involves child murder. Horrible lyrics, nice tune.

Sir James the Rose - Steeleye Span, another English traditional. It's about a knight who killed his squire (a child in training) for reasons unknown. His friends are tasked with hunting him down; he begs his girlfriend for succor, but she rats him out. She is later rewarded with James' head.

Also see various WW1 and WW2 tunes; not all of them had sad music (lyrics being a different story.) Dogface Soldier is from WW1, and was written by a soldier. ("I'm just a dogface soldier, with a rifle on my shoulder" .. used to have that on 75 RPM, sigh. It was a reassurance to the folks back home that their "dogface soldier boy's OK", as long as you "feed me ammunition, keep me in my old division.")

We also have the issue of those belly-dancing Khajit. You cannot belly-dance to mournful music. You just can't.

I've had my game music settings turned off for a while, but it has no effect on the plaintive wailing of the minstrels and bards that I object to.

The game's background music scores are beautiful and well done, but eventually get old, too. I do find them pleasant enough that I turn them back on from time to time, but I would never turn the bards back on at this point, if I could mute them.

It would be awesome if someone could write an addon to redirect the bard music pointers to a blank file, or to a music file of your own choosing.

The problem isn't the type of music, I've heard traditional music played on traditional instruments before. It's that the songs are all of the same type, it's like every single bard has studied under the same master. and if you don't like that one particular style, then it's hell on Tamriel.

What I would like to hear, is a range of musical styles, maybe even a selection option in a menu, where we can choose from moody to happy musical styles. After all it's ridiculous to expect Dunmer to like the same music as Nords, or Khajiit to like the same music as Argonians.

That said... yeah a mod that lets you play your own music would be freakin' fantastic. And I think that's probably more realistic than expecting them to keep coming up with new music. But I also definitely support the idea of being able to mute the freaking bards. If we can't get them to play new music we need to be able to click on them and shut them the hell up!
