LOL... I love the comment about there being more than two executives at game companies, particularly.
-First-Wave Closed Beta Tester of the Psijic Order, aka the 0.016 percent. Exploits suck. Don't blame just the game, blame the players abusing them! -Playing since July 2013, back when we had a killspam channel in Cyrodiil and the lands of Tamriel were roamed by dinosaurs.
________________ -In-game mains abound with "Nerf" in their name. As I am asked occasionally, I do not play on anything but the PC NA Megaserver at this time.
I would probably agree on the "pay to win" and "Early Access" ones, but the DLC one just perpetuates a highly inaccurate belief about DLC which is totally wrong.
A person walks into a restaurant and orders a hamburger. The waitress comes back with a burger on a plate to which the person complains, "Where's my fries?"
"You didn't order fries." she replies.
"I ordered a hamburger and a hamburger ALWAYS comes with fries."
"I can get you fries, but it will cost extra." the waitress said.
"EXTRA!!! You 'cut' the fries from the hamburger and now you want to sell them back to me for more money!"
"Our burgers never included fries. Fries have always been priced separately. $4 for a burger and $3 for the fries."
The customer storms out of the restaurant.. "that's it I am never eating here again, I am going next door where they NEVER charge extra for fries! There I can get my burger and fries together for only $8"
I remember back when I played Sega Genesis I once bought Sonic and Knuckles.
The game was a complete game unto itself, and then other games could be plugged into it in order to expand character selection in those games.
Now I would get a single game and pay extra for the characters.
But
People pay for it.
It will keep going as long as people keep paying.

Well, there are different kinds of DLC. One the one hand, all three of Skyrim's official DLC added substantial content (add the free Creation Kit, and that's a lot of expansion possibility). On the other hand, you have Horse Armor, which Bethesda will never live down.
The truth that the money grubbers in suits and ties do this...
Or the truth that sometimes I'm the guy busting out the credit card when something new drops and I know damn well it's just a steaming pile with a fancy paint job...
I'm like Fox Mulder. "I want to believe...." that it's going to be a good game
I remember playing counterstrike source and getting a free new map every month or so.
Quake arena had tons of maps and skins free to download.
Total Annihilation was constantly releasing new units and maps.
That's about the last time I can remember additional content being guaranteed with the original purchase price.
Nowadays we have games like SC2 and BF4 that capitalize on the farce that is DLC.
