Young Animals Who Follow You Around Like Pets

I've noticed this several times while playing the game, occasionally I'll encounter a wild animal, such as a wolf, who suddenly starts following me around like a lost dog upon first encounter. The only difference between this and other animals is that they are usually called young wolves or young wasps (had a wasp follow me around as well).

Does anyone know what the deal is with these little creatures? Can you make actual pets out of them eventually?

I've always had them either evaporate after a short distance traveled, or die in the first fistfight I have with an NPC after acquiring the foundling.

I know the wasp one happens when one of the Wasp mobs stings my character.
I get this egg that grows out of my back, which eventually explodes into a friendly wasp mob that follows me.

I've only had it happen once, killed a bunch of wasps(I'm guessing was this young wasps family!) and it started following me.

I got super scraed and freaked out when the young wasp first time started stalking me, the sound creeps me out.-

Wolves too? I have had the wasp before... I would love to have the wolf.

Never had a wolf do it but love the baby wasps. i actually tried farming them once... managed to get 3 of them following me... not easy since its an attack you have to wait for before you kill the mob, if you dont keep the mob provoked it turns its attention on current baby and usually kills them in a shot or 2.
