ELI5: Overchanging Stats

NerosCinema
Hello! I'm a VR4 Dragonknight Khajiit. As I inch closer and closer to end game I feel like I should really begin to learn my role, which is tank.

I run a full heavy set of armor with Head/Chest/Legs enchanted for health and Shoulder/Waist/Belt/Boots enchanted for magicka. I spread my attributes 15M/24H/10S (I recognize I'll probably need to add more to health for tanking, but the extra magicka helps with PvE and doing damage)

At the moment, my armor, spell resistance, and health recovery are all overcharged. Is overcharging a bad thing? Should I rework my my attributes and armor to avoid overcharging? One idea I had was to instead of using Reinforce on all 7 armor items, use the trait to reduce critical damage on 4 of them instead, thus dropping my armor rating but perhaps getting rid of the overcharge.

Any help is appreciated!

Overcharging is bad depending on how you look at it.

Lets take armor for example at soft cap you get 30% physical damage reduction. At hard cap you get 50% physical damage reduction.

Taking armor and health to say hard cap levels would make you seem damn near unkillable and VERY easy for a healer to keep alive allowing them to spend more time DPSing than attempting to keep you live making up for your complete lack of DPS.

Since your a tank I would think Stamina would be the more important stat. You use Stamina to Block and Dodge which is VERY important to stay alive. Stamina is also required for you S&B taunt.

As a tank DPS really isn't your job tanking and controlling the battlefield is. That's not to say Magicka isn't useful to you either but again you are looking at Magicka as a DPS increase and not as an increase to utility and survivability.

Personally I like the idea of pushing a Stat to hard cap whether its armor or Stamina as this actually makes you better than everybody else in a very particular area versus a very easy to reach diluted soft cap.

Maybe as a tank my ideal stats would be Armor, Spell resist, health, Stamina, Magicka in that order pushing as many as possible to as close to hard cap as possible.

In my opinion you lose too much by trying to focus only on one stat. Over-all you'll be much more survivable if you only focus on getting to the soft caps, because it's pretty easy to get to all if you don't waste stats/ resources focusing on one thing.

As a DK you have Razor Armor at your disposal, and heavy armor should get you to the soft cap without reinforced. With the combo of heavy and Razor Armor, you'll be well over softcap and the diminishing returns on your armor is so much at that point that your reinforced trait becomes obsolete.

In my opinion the best set up is to enchant all of your gear with health, because glyphs and attributes follow the same 1:1.5:1 ratio. However I then recommend you put infused trait on your heavy pieces (helm, chest, legs, shield) and impentrable on your light (waist, gloves, shoulders, boots). The healh gain from infused is greater than that of magicka or stamina so health is the better option; and imp will be the same on all the pieces so better to use on the ones with the least return for armor glyphs.

I would the recommend putting half your attributes into health (this will get you to the softcap on health) use the other half for whatever resource stat you want to focus on. Then use food that increases both magicka and stamina and at which point you should be pretty close to the soft cap on both of those stats.

Attempting to go over the softcap is just a waste of stats in my opinion because the DR is too great, and you only have a limited supply of stats. The best thing is to just focus on the softcaps, and fill the gaps with skills.

    @Shaun98ca2 & @GothicPython‌

    Both great explanations and opinions!

As a DK Tank myself (Sword & Board) I tend to follow @GothicPython 's way of doing things. I also am a Stamina specialist because I am stubborn ! :)
