Four words Zenimax probably regrets saying

Play as you want, does not mean "Win as you want".

Now where did I put that press to win button?

However, in the end, they made classes skills matter far more than they should have. there arent enough ordinary skills for a given skill tree that can really compete with the class skills right now. In addition, all class skills use mana, so by default your kind of pushed to favor magicka in your builds no matter what class you are.

This is the heart of the matter. This was their fundamental mistake. And it's not an obscure thing that only comes to light months in. It is a fundamental aspect of the game. I remember this being raised within days of the first public beta opening it was so obvious.

So it must have come out in the private beta testing but like with the similarly obvious and predictable impact of phasing on grouping they simply chose to utterly ignore the issue.

Well, neither have gone away. Both are loudly ticking.

However there are 4 word sentences that Zenimax don't mind using !...

    "What you mean Bugs?"

    "Show us you're Money"

    "We don't do Refunds"

    "Nightblade is not Broken"

And of course the four I'm using now...

    "Sorry Zenimax, just teasing"

I think you can pretty much play how you want. You can't play how you want in every situation, always, all the time. You can't AvA in some wonky glass cannon build and expect to tank while doing it. You can't use a bunch of armor with passives that help stamina abilities while relying on spells and staffs.

There are a number of effective combinations of abilities, I have a NB half way though the VR zones that is all light armor and staff and is doing great. I have seen great NB tanks. I have a sorc that tanks VR dungeons in light armor. You can do these things if you know how the game mechanics work.

Their statement might be overly inclusive, like a pack of pulsar spaming DKs in some perverse additiive Venn diagram, but I think the spirit of any class fulfilling any core role, Tank, DPS or Healer, is true.

What they mean is that the classes don't really define you as much as other MMO's. Look at other MMO's and you pick a class and you get a set amount of skills and set armor and set weapons. Don't really see that here. Not really sure why people have a problem with that but that's how people are. Honestly if you just play the game and never read the forums you would have never known that any build was overpowered or that anything was broken or didn't work. Took me reading the forums to find out my VR9 Templar was not able to solo VR zones. Who would of thought it.

Maybe your Templar build was just bad? I battled my way all the way through to eastmarch(pre vr Nerf) as a solo Templar. Of course there were things I couldn't do solo, aka world bosses, but they're not meant to be solo. But any of the quest bosses I was able to kill. Sure it was tough, but I expected that out of VR content. Sorry you felt vr was supposed to be a cakewalk

I want to play my character as a repeat offender for theft, but none of the guards care enough to arrest me. ZOS needs to fix this.

Our regular dedicated group consists of:
    - A Sorceror Tank wearing Light/Medium armour with Sword/Board. He also shoots lightning so we basically call him "Thor". Supplies armours for the group.
    - A Sorceror DPS/Healer who's primarily rockin' a Destruction staff. Does considerable CC and often switches to Restoration to heal. He has a ridiculously giant magicka pool and supplies potions and enchantments for the group.
    - A Nightblade dualwield/DPS who's pretty standard as Nightblades go and can offer siphoning heals. Supplies a crap-ton of various foods for the group.
    - A Nightblade 2-h DPS in heavy armour who hardly ever gets hit... it's almost like he's never there but when there's a corpse, he's almost always standing over it. Supplies weapons for the group.

We're very satisfied with the results.

The thing with "Play how you want" doesn't make up the fact that some people are subject to peer pressure.

It's the people that makes or break the encounters, not the classes. If you're in a group of friends, everyone tries to pull their own weight if not more.
