Animation Cancelling, Enlighten me please...

After browsing these forums for a while and seeing "animation cancelling" being brought up over and over, and now seems to be a requirement to DPS in Trials groups, i still don't know how to accomplish this in game.
What qualifies as animation cancelling and how is it done? I've blocked during a skill animation before but it still seems to wait to activate another until the animation would have finished. Am i missing something?
And, once i get this figured out, is this going to change? I find it kind of lame i have to do something on the verge of a bug/glitch to get "Top DPS". If anything, add it to the Tutorial stage :)

Any help is appreciated!

Tap an ability then block, or use light/heavy attack, then cancel with block or an ability.

Press light attack, and use another skill right after. A lot of skills will sort of cancel the light attack animation and allow you to use the light attack and skill in rapid progression.

    I enjoy it.

I have yet to read a single dev post that mentions anything about it being a bug/exploit. You don't have to do it but of course if you want to be "Top DPS" you are going to need to use all your skills to the best of your ability otherwise there would be no such thing as "Top DPS".

I honeslty don't think it is going to change it is just part of the design of the game. Skills in this game don't have a global cooldown they are only limited by the animation and an attack with a higher priority can cancel the animation of the lower priority attack. The most common way you see this is light attack > skill, the skill has a higher priority so you get off the light attack but the skill fires off before the light attack animation finishes. So light attack > skill > light attack > skill allows you to weave light attacks between your skills. It is just a design choice. Some people take it to the extreme by doing light attack > skill > block so the skill canacels the animation of the light attack and the block cancels the animation of the skill, but imo that isn't really needed and you pretty much have to be melee to pull that off.

If you list your class and playstyle people can give you suggestions on how to make it work.

My favorite move, 2-handed heavy attack from crouch -> Swallow soul -> instant +2000 dmg.

Personally I'd call it an exploit. I think mastering the intended game design should be what makes a player good, not discovering and exploiting non-intended game mechanics. I really hope they fix this.

Maybe, but as long as it is available to everyone it's not harmful to anyone.

Aside from "you personally calling it an exploit" what makes this not part of game design that people have mastered? The devs are more than well aware of it and have never hinted that it wasn't intended.

Sorcs like to do it in PvP with Crystal fragments. They will show the block animation but actually be casting the spell. It's a cheap yet effective way for them to try and catch DK's who use reflective plate off guard.

Ah ok, i had figured out the Light Attack>Skill thing in early access by accident then. I was a bow user and noticed i could fire off a light attack and press Venomous Arrow immediately and it was almost like the whole attack was instant. didn't know that was the same thing as "animation cancelling".

I am currently a 2 handed Sorcerer in 5Med/2Light, bar 1 is Carve (2h cleave morph) Storm calling for DPS (liquid lightning and Critical Surge) CC (Crystal Shards) and defense (Bound Armaments). My other bar has a few more Weapon skills from the 2h tree. I just hit VR1 last night (i have a VR2 Nightblade i quite about a month ago as well). I think because of the speed of 2 hand animations this doesn't work as good as it did on say, my bow user. Though i'd have to sit down and give it some serious practice.

It may not be an exploit, but its a lame design choice if it MUST BE USED TO DO TRIALS DPS. That just seems like poor planning to me

I thought blocking during Crystal Shards would cancel the cast??? Well now i know. Thats crazy. I could have swore it cancels when i block after i start casting it...
