Player Housing - There is Now a Standard

With the release of detailed information regarding SWTOR's player housing system, a new standard for player housing in this generation of MMOs has been established.

What started with RIFT's incredibly customizable Dimensions, SWTOR's Galactic Strongholds cements the "flexible" player housing implementation. Now even a direct copy of Skyrim's housing system would be considered substandard. Buying presets of buildings with minor layout differences is not going to cut it anymore.

Zenimax, whatever you're working on for player housing needs to at least match RIFT and SWTOR. I don't know anything about WoW's Garrison system, but if it is similarly robust, then you really need to make sure you're on the ball here. This is the year of player housing, I hope you're taking it seriously.

I was always partial to Dark Age of Camelot's housing system, as simple as it was. The ability to hire merchants for your house, traders, buy storage space, and have quick travel to and from, not to mention a good deal of dressings and trophy displays. However, a more customize-able 'Elder Scrolls' interpretation could be amazing.

Housing will not be in for at least two years, so I guess they will have plenty of time to work on it.

Hope we get a choice of housing types, from townhouse to underground lair.

I haven't seen SWTOR's housing. I'll have to check that out. I wish I had not maxed all the classes in that game.

As enticing as that sounds, you do know most of that stuff costs real life money and this game is notoriously bugged and unbalanced, I understand that being unbalanced for 3 months is very acceptable but bugged for 3 months of payed game time is completely unacceptable.

Anyway I think they aim to add player housing within the year, if they aren't still moping up their bugs and have managed to keep their loyal subscribers playing while attracting new ones.

What I am saying is fix the game first then worry about strongholds and houses later.

LOL, have you SEEN this or simply read about it .. give me Dimensions any day, far more fun.

@babylon‌ that would be awesome. DAoC had it where you could choose your house type, though it was limited. There was a single story cabin, up through a multi-story mansion with a basement/dungeon sort of deal. I bet they could do wonders with a system like that.

There was an hour long developer video. Strongholds aren't as flexible as Dimensions, but they're still very flexible.

I had a chance to play a demo of SWTOR housing. When I asked if what I had demo'ed was the final product they basically said that yeah just minor tweaks were left. I will say it was garbage. It was worse than what City of Heroes had for their bases when that game was active and that was pretty horrid. I believe many SWTOR players will be greatly disappointed in what they receive as "player housing".

i really dont get the arousal some players seem to get from player housing

i have my own house, in fact i just bought a new one and will be spending so much time in the real world decorating and furnishing my real house, that spending my downtime doing the same to a virtual house really doesn't tickle my nethers...

ingame housing is very gimmicky and i would guess a roleplayers wet dream, yet it's my idea of an ingame nightmare that detracts from other useful endgame additions that serve a greater purpose than elder sims online.

i kind-of like the direction WoW is going with garrisons, with the not yet implemented idea that you might have to defend them from invaders - thats an interesting twist.

but bulk standard, decorate your living room with severed heads player housing serves little real gameplay purpose

Doesn't look that special to me. Looks rather freaking limited actually... at least in SWG you could place items WHEREVER the hell you wanted in your house... not just on a set of "hooks" as they are calling them. Thats lazy.

Loved EQ2 housing. And, it tied in great with the Auction House. Why don't we just implement this and kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

I actually find the options with Wildstar housing system the most flexible and definitely more interesting than Swtor :)

SWG was a sandbox MMO pretty much exclusively built around player housing. SWTOR is a theme park MMO and this is a side feature.

Along with individual player housing, SWTOR will also be adding guild flagships, which will be a place for your guild to customize and hang out in.

Player housing is nothing but an in game money sink and in some games, a real game money sink. I would rather the devs spend there time on actual game content then giving me the ability to make a house with a picket white fence where i can store my junk.

IN later SWG pvp, if you just ignore the crappy new comabt system. you could burchase structures to place a base that would help with planet control. You needed to have a couple of pals just to take them down because you need certain skills to access the base's machinery (ex:bounty hunters needed to hack a terminal)

    I loved that sandbox approach

I'm in the same bucket...people keep talking about player housing and places you can "hang out"....I don't want to hang out, I want to kill stuff and progress. I can hear everything my guild says in the TS we are in or via the in game guild chat no matter where we all are in the world.

Don't get me wrong, if people want it in the game and makes them happy I'm totally supportive of it, I guess I'm just missing something.

I bet there is not much variety with the ships though. Was so disappointed their are so little styles of space ships in that game, WHy are the jedi's and sith's ships the same, but BH and Imp agent/commando and smuggler get their own style?

There is also a standard for Space Combat! Lets get on that!

Sorry i know that isn't the point here. It just made me giggle, someone holding Swtor up as a standard for anything other then Story.

I'd also hold SWTOR up as a standard for instanced PvP and equipment customization.
