Templar and Channeled Focus. Amazing? Or bugged?

Usually when something is amazing, its bugged. But we shall see with a possible reply from a forum mod.

I noticed yesterday while doing a little lvling of some skills/resto staff that Channeled Focus' magicka restoring ability is on the caster. Its not attached to the ground element. So, if you drop this on the ground you get a sweet armor/resist buff, and you immediately begin gaining 10 magicka ever .5 seconds, for 17 seconds. You loose the armor/resist buff if you leave the circle, but you will not lose the magicka regen until the 17 secs is up no matter how far you go.

For me the spell costs 144 mana, so as long as you dont anticipate it and wait till it expires this is a great bar swap mana tool. Considering templars have nothing. I just hope its not a bug.

hmm.. i dont know.. i took the added healing one.

i honestly cant say if this is a bug or not.. as it seems entirely plausible it was intended either way..

The only people who can answer this question is ZOS and ZOS alone... Since they are the ones who made the game after all....

It's been working like this since the beginning. Gives you back like free 180ish magicka in 17 seconds.
ZOS said they are working on resource management for Templars, so hopefully we'll have real resource management options soon.

If it didn't pop me out of stealth to cast it, I'd be using it regularly in pvp.

Mine costs 146 and gives me back 170 magicka over 17 seconds (at level 1). So I gain 24 magicka back when taking into account the magicka I have to spend in order to cast the ability.

The armor and spell resistance buffs are decent comparing to other abilities (though the extra mitigation is hardly noticeable) but who is ever going to be standing in a 5m circle in PvP to begin with?

The ability is highly circumstantial and doesn't pack the punch a tier 5 ability should. It can be fixed though simply by increasing the magicka return.

Circle of protection is also a ground buff. Very good imho and I see no problem with it.

You can stand inside of it if you are either ranged or defending a position like a keep (where many friendly players will be standing still). Ive used CoC in Cyrodil many times when Im defending a keep in the stairs, packed in the banner room or just in the walls and it works wonders, not to mention in PVE (600+ armor and spell resist? any day of the year lol).

The protection aura for rune focus is smaller than circle of protection. Tooltip for circle of protection says 5m, so rune focus is probably 3m? Or less.

Just noticed that after I morphed it, the duration went down to 15 seconds so the magicka return basicly replenishes the magicka used to cast it.

I can definately see that it has it uses, albeit circumstantial, but I would be hard pressed to find a slot for it on my loadouts.

Maybe this ability is designed to be one of those PvE abiities there are some of. However, I would love to see it tweaked a little in order to make it more appealing for PvP. For instance by giving it a greater magicka return or increase its radius to 8 or 10 meters.

it surely isn't helpful for wild fights but in a keep assault it can prove itself useful. As templar, you usually try to find a safe spot where you can heal your mates while they tank the main assault in a tower for example. I'll try this out. Thanks for sharing.

Restoration is a perfectly valid school of magic, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise! - Spells and incantations for those with the talent to cast them!

Its not that much circumstancial imho. It works for keep assaults, pvp if you are ranged class, pve...

The skill gives back magicka without any kind of requirement for it like all others do (doing damage, receiving..) but only for using it. I dont see the need to raise the magicka back when it gives you like double the ammount you spent to cast it and you dont even have to be in ground area. Meaning even if you miss the ground buff for the whole duration, you are having a magicka return just for using it.

I could see a ground area increase tho. If the skill is 3m radius then it should be at least CoC area size, even if that makes it better than CoC (specific class skills vs public skilltree).

The magicka return is too low and slow, to even considering it a resource management. You get better management just by using 1 Resto staff heavy attack, I guess that alone speaks volumes. The defensive buff would be good if they didnt force you to stay at such a small area. This ability has no synergy with the class or the game mechanics. As it's been said a thousand times before, seems all Templar abilities were design based on a good magicka management (beta) through passives, but they nerfed the passive really bad right before launch and left all the ability costs and penalties untouched.

it seems to me that the magicka morph basically just makes it so that rune focus has no actual cost in the long run...
