ESO - what it should be..

blofthouse2004
ok ESO has been out 2 months now and my personal opinion kind of reflects what i am reading from the majority of the other players, the game just hasnt lived up to what we all expected.

I'd really like a list of what ESO should have been and what features we all value most importantly about the Elder Scrolls games.

Its highly doubtful anyone will take note of what the fans actually want, as in most cases it seems developers have this concept of a game and it generally wont be changed, even if the fans are begging for it.

Strange really, its like developers dont want to make the perfect game.

Anyway, everyone say the top 6 things which MAKES an ES game for you.

1. exploration, considering the size of the map i dont feel much adventure awaits
2. combat, always liked the ES combat, ESO does it pretty well
3. quests and lore, poor quests in ESO
4. crafting, good system just seems pointless without auction house etc
5. housing, most of us like a base to come home to
6. PVP, needs sorting so ALL levels can play and have fun

You may not agree with my top 6 so add your own...

    1. Have you tried exploring? I assure you, if you feel like there's not a lot to find, it's because you're not looking.
    2. Combat feels good to me.
    3. I think this has to be a matter of taste, because for my money, the writing and implementation of quests in this game is better than any MMO I've seen. And it's on a level with any of the Elder Scrolls titles. They don't have "Go kill 10 bears" quests, and when they do have fetch quests, they actually have a damn good explanation for why you're the one doing the fetching.
    4. Crafting is absolutely fantastic. Auction houses are a separate thing, and there's plenty of debate on both sides. You cannot simply state that a global auction house is a requirement for an MMO.
    5. Ok, fine. I don't know when housing became a big thing in MMOs, but I guess it is.
    6. This is the only thing I can actually get behind. A separate VR campaign would go a long way towards letting people level through PvP, if that's what they choose to do.

This x10000. The last MMOs I played... every 2nd quest was kill 10 this or 12 that. I am happy ESO managed to keep the quest structure the way it is now. Sure there are many linear quests, but we are dealing with scale here. A compromise had to be reached.

    1. just doesnt feel like a world to me, a big part of ES games was just going out and finding things, doesnt seem much point in ESO. skyshards, lorebooks, it needs more.
    3. no doubt they have spent a fortune on the voice acting etc, but some quests are so bad, going through portals or down a dungeon to click a few buttons is boring, public dungeons all have the same map, just doesnt excite me.
    4. to make crafting worthwhile we need to be able to sell our wares and give them some value. guild shops are a joke, being in a guild means you GIVE stuff to each other not sell it.
    5. lots of the great mmo's of the early years had housing and it was brilliant, agree its not for everyone though, but it could also improve other aspects of the game, fishing, exploration, dungeons, anything to get a trophy or item for your house.
    6. PVP was so good in the first month, i loved it, now i rock up and get trounced by VR's. The PVP is well done it just needs some separation for the levels etc.

    3. Quests are somewhat on par with Skyrim, main ones are even on higher level.

ESO is literally exactly what I had expected it to be (I didn't expect Skyrim 2.0) and also exactly what I was looking for in an MMO at this moment in time. I played WoW for 4 1/2 years to the point I hated it with every fiber of my being, only sticking around because of the buds in my guild I raided with. Then I tried LotRO, it just didn't do it for me, and I love J.R.R. Tolkien. Went to Rift after that and played from launch until I a month before starting ESO at launch. Rift is a good game if they can ever figure out how to make it run well. My first MMO was Eve Online and I still play from time to time. I love it but it gets boring, Spreadsheets Online ftw.

ESO is the right mix of what I enjoy in a game and an MMO, and that's good enough for my monthly sub.

    1. It's there, but the game is on rails, no doubt.
    2. Combat is fun, swap is still an issue, but I'm seeing less combat lag.
    3. I think this is where the game shines.
    4. Dynamic crafting system
    5. Housing would be great, but I'm willing to wait
    6. Haven't stepped into PvP since Beta because of balance issues. Will do when I reach VR12

Open world exploration is greatly missed. Level zone restrictions give an unnatural sense of security. (I'm also on a Fog of War kick today, so bear with me.)

There was greatness in exploring truly by picking a direction and running...because in most cases, you didn't run into a(n insurmountable) barrier within 2 minutes of picking said direction.

There was danger to be had everywhere, because being in a 'zone' didn't mean you wouldn't run across something far bigger and meaner...

It gave a level of awareness that is not required for the current setup...you can't really accidentally wander into another country... You can't physically meander onto the Cyrodiil battlefield because you put your nose to the ground an kept going... (Oh neat...enemy trebuchets...and mildly bewildered, yet angry soldiers manning them...)
    3. no doubt they have spent a fortune on the voice acting etc, but some quests are so bad, going through portals or down a dungeon to click a few buttons is boring, public dungeons all have the same map, just doesnt excite me.

Indeed. Most of the dungeons do not feel very epic. Four turns and an exit does not a dungeon make. I don't care how many bosses or skyshards or lorebooks are in there.

Group dungeons are closer to what standard dungeons should be, and there are a few standard dungeons (One in Stormhaven, whose name eludes me, which is filled with Ogres, Goblins, and and Durzogs...) that feel like dungeons.

If I'm not seriously potentially concerned for my character's well being when I enter an area, it just doesn't seem as real...

The fact that I can pause and check baskets for peanut brittle and lamb chops while the Boss is 15' away tends to take away from it some too...

Crafting? It's ok...but unbalanced. I'm hoping they expand and correct some things for the mage side of the house at some point.

Enchanting is slow and painful (and of limited use without more enchantments for armor and no jewelcrafting, as of yet). Alchemy is semi-unnecessary, as you can usually find potions enough that making your own is, well, semi-unnecessary. And Provisioning, for all intents and purposes, seems to be more powerful in many ways than Alchemy is...yet there is an innate inability to consume both a food and a drink...

A little enchanting credit would be nice too...It's great that my DK friend pounded out a pretty chestpiece for you (to which bears his name), but that cool mystical glow that adds the health/stamina/magicka that just saved your life? That was my guy...and relatively speaking, I had to search longer, harder, and scale s l o w e r, to add that substantial benefit. So could I at least get an honorable mention? Some initials in the form of Rune markings? Something...?

They've many things right, but they have much room for improvement, as well.
Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

    Earn it.

    1. This is not an ES game its TESO made by a diff company.
    2. Online games that have built in voice chat systems and better controls on the zone chat/channels
    3. Stats and gear options are always alway
    4. Finding items, gear, etc.
    5. Progressing through group challenges for in game rewards
    6. PvP is not my thing but if there were arena's where ppl could play 1 on 1 or every man for himself limited to 4 players that would be welcomed.
