Yea your not referring to purely "Aoe" abilities so much as you are "ultra slow telegraphed abilities"
Ultra slow telegraphed abilities are meant to do massive damage. Given how easy they are to dodge.
Single target version such as enemy power attacks deal very similar amounts of damage.

not so easy to be dodge on EU server thx to latancy issues you are hit even when beein outside of the circle by 2-3 m on the client side while dmg is calculated on the server side where you lost roughly sec befor your client even know the ae is comming...
cant wait to play this game with the eu server beeing actually located in europe...
Sigh, when are these threads going to stop? Thats the whole point of AOE attacks, to be dangerous, thats why you get these flashy red lines to tell you where its gonna hit. IT MEANS MOVE OUT OF THEM

Single-Target-attack: Strong
AoE-attack: Weak but hits multiple targets
That's how MMOs are designed.
Ok, there are few MMOs, where AoEs are equal in dmg to single-target-attacks, but AoE doing 3-4 times as much dmg. as single-target?
As said, I'm ok with it, if it's intended, but I'm guessing that it's not, especially because of the proportion of those attacks to the total health of a character, how would you react, if 20 mobs hit on your character, doing almost nothing, and then 1 mob does 1 skill, taking you from 50% life to 0 in less than 1s.

But this is not a usual MMO. Mobs use skills just like you do and their skills just like yours do way more damage then normal attacks. Thats why they gave mobs indicators of what they are about to do, so you can react on it.
Sorry you cant see it and think its a bad design. It makes prefect sense. If you allow a special attack, a skill, to hit you then dont come complaining you are getting trashed, of course you are getting trashed, its designed to do it this way, its up to you NOT to get hit by it. If you dont allow it, then theres no problem and you win the fight. thats how you play ESO combat by avoiding stuff that needs to be avoided.
