A question on Motifs

At VR3 I have been running around and checking containers looking for Motifs (among other things)... there are a couple of towns (VR2 area) that have a large number of containers in a small area, so I will pop on over and check them.
A friend of mine does the same, granted, he is VR1... the only other difference is I have learned the motifs on the character I am looking with.
My friend has found a couple primal motifs in the last week, I have found zero...
Is there a function that will cause you not to find the rare motifs if you already know them or is it just my bad luck?
