Add-On Issues after patches

So I know that with each update the game recognizes the add-ons as being out of date. But mine completely reset everything, and is giving persistent UI errors that I cannot get rid of.

Having to completely redo my UI, and then go and try and troubleshoot which add-ons are causing problems is a real PITA. Anyone know any quicker way to do this?

If you look at the errors ESO is throwing, it is because they changed the API. The add-on developers probably had no clue that they were going to do that. You know how forthcoming Z-Devs are with information...

And, I bet you noticed the nice 'cover-my-ass' EULA addition that Z threw in there to make sure that in no way THEY could be held accountable for crappy add-on behavior. Tools.

I'm not sure how you could hold any developer responsible for breaking addons. They are not tested by Zeni during patches. It's the responsibility of the addon creator to ensure that the addon is compatible with the upcoming build by testing it on the PTR/PTS.

I was kind of surprised to see that my settings had been reset for the addons, considering most of that information is saved in the individual addon's Saved Variables lua files and separate from ZO files.

If you noticed, you had to agree to a separate EULA and re-agree to terms to use addons.

They were reset to 0 for all players on this patch. If you never clicked the addon button you would never even know that separate agreement existed.
Tl;dr really weigh the fun you have in game vs the business practices you are supporting.

I hold Z responsible for not getting timely information on API changes out to the community.

I still say they are tools.

After playing WoW for years this is something I have come to expect with every large patch, and why I try to keep my addon use to a minimum. But alas I am an addon fiend and end up cursing myself every patch. Stupid, stupid me.

I'm also an addon addict. Started fiddling with editing lua files from WoW addons to tweak things here or there so I got into the habit of making backup copies of my entire Interface folder which included Addon files, Saved Variable Files, etc.

So many addons need to be updated/fixed though that even restoring settings wouldn't do much right now. :p

Very good idea. I had ESOHEAD phreak out the other day and start giving me the Unknown Error of Death. And there wasn't even a patch that day. backup are good!

If they could provide addon makers some of their proposed API changes during testing phase, this would probably not happen. I'm glad I don't bother making addons for this game >:)

I know that ESOUI.com has the program called Minion which is basically their version of the Curse client but I've gotten into the habit of maintaining, backing up and updating my addons manually that I just don't bother with it.

Besides, it reminds me usually that it's been a few days since my last backup and nudges me to update. :p

I copy the Addons, Saved Variables folders as well as AddonSettings and UserSettings files and TRY and keep them updated as much as possible.

((I got so addicted to addons and customizing my UI in WoW. I'd go so far as to say it was nearly a compulsion. I even had a ''Grid'' addon just to make sure that I was lining up UI elements horizontally and vertically. XD ))

We have a problem. Do you think there is a 10 step program for us?

I'm still downloading the patch -- is it just settings wiped out, or is it the saved data too? I would be really sad to lose my HarvestMap and Quest Journal data.

My understanding is that the settings and saved data is really stored in the same place, so it sounds like everything...

I'm going to back up my SavedVariables folder just in case.

holy what is wrong with you people.

The addon developers haven't updated your addon yet. This is standard patch-day stuff, for every patch ever effecting an addon api of every mmo ever, in the history of mmos.

as Chatoyancy said, backup your saved variables.

like... really, people? really? QQing over broken addons on patch day?

The way he used Z in this statement had me reading it like Jason Stathams character in Snatch when talking to Tommy.

Patience, everyone. The addon writers usually need to check and issue updates. Many of the WoW addon writers rewrite theirs during the ptr and have the addon updates online within a few hours after a major patch. I expect the same thing will happen with eso addon writers.

I lost all my harvest data. Not a single node pin to be found.

I understand add-ons displaying error messages, and the whole bit about the API. Yes, it is up to the creator to ensure the add-on works. Erasing all the settings and data however is complete BS. I blame Zenimax 100% for that.

    Edit:
Should I have backed up my data? Yea i really should have. I didn't though, and I don't think it was unreasonable of me to expect that they save my settings. But I guess this is how they are gonna play ball so for the future I will save before every patch.

Tip: since eso stores all settings in the Documents sub (unlike some other mmos), just use Windows backup to automatically back up to Skydrive/Onedrive.

Thanks Captain Hindsight. Already stated I should have done that. Doesn't change the fact that the data should not have been erased. All the other patches were fine. Why not this one?

Zenimax erased the data. That is their failure. I didn't do it.
Should I have backed up my stuff? Yes.
Should they have erased it all? No

Good news -- the data isn't erased. Bad news, you need to edit your SavedVariable files to get it back, but it's a pretty easy edit:

I'm always curious when addons massively break like this precisely why the developer thought it neccessary to change the api(s) that broke.

Presumably somebody/where was using the apis to do something the developers thought was exploitive... but what?

When you change an API, you *know* it's going to break things. So either they had no choice because it was allowing some sort of explotive behavior, or the developers are just being jerks.
