Are Templar's painful to level up?

brandon.coker101_ESO
I have heard they are really slow killing and you run out of mana too easy...

Opinions from people who play them please.

I never really had an issue until the VR lvls...

I tried the first zone, and realized how little xp I got, then I said screw it...

I now level solely through PvP.

Edit: To answer your questions, no I had no issue lvling pre VR. Templars suffer from Magicka issues. If you use mainly Dawn of Wrath abilities to kill things while lvling you shouldn't have much problem. Though a resto staff is pretty much required...

Alot of Templars just run around spamming Biting jabs to kill everything, it seemed to work fairly well for them. Not really my style.

Play any class you want but understand that Templars are the only class that had their resource mechanic removed from Beta. Templars are also the lowest sustained DPS class.

Beta and three months subscription revenue should bear sustained DPS and resource mechanic balance for all classes.

Level 1-50 won't matter but VR will wake you up in a heart beat to your lack of relevance to trials groups and lack of sustained DPS and resource mechanic.

On the bright side, maybe they will balance the classes by the time you hit VR content if your just starting out.

DKs and Sorcs have been the OP FOTM from Beta and nothing is changing in comparison to the weakness of Templars as a class.

If you want to face roll through end game content, DK or Sorc might be your option as it doesn't appear that Zenimax is going to create class balance anytime soon.

If you do roll a Templar, you might consider an Imperial. The "Red Diamond" racial seems a bit OP in healing when using rapid strike abilities.

I've got all classes to vet 1, bar Nightblade which is 40ish.

Templar was by far the most fun to level from 1-50. By far! This won't appeal to all, but jumping from mob to mob with the Templar's spear-leap, biting jab spamming the group into submission, and finishing off with a huge crescent sweep is a lot of fun.

Of course, you might argue spamming is not smart play. But we all do it a degree when we have 5 abilities to choose from.

However, it's considerably more harder for Vet content where the Templar's innate damage abilities don't really cope. But a patch has been released today with lots of buffs to skills. :open_mouth:

Its been four months and I'm quickly losing patience given Zenimax's lack of progress in balancing classes to present.

Was not the game released 4/4/14? It has been under 3 months by my count.

Anyway, no class is hard to level 1-50. In 50++ VR content it gets harder, although so far for me VR 1-5 has been actually kind of fun. Like how it is suppose to be in terms of difficulty. Tougher but far from impossible, and that is with a melee oriented build, 10/12 skills Templar skills. We will see how VR 6-12 goes.

Well I have a VR2 Templar and I think if you don't use and develop your full "toolbox" of skills it can be tough. I've found that as I evolve out more of the guild abilities and resto staff/destroy staff/bow abilities I do pretty good.

Or if you want to just heal your way to VR12, that's not hard to do either via Craglorn for a few levels then just healing in Vet Dungeons (don't recommend going into the first batch until you're at least VR3). Anyway, lots of possible ways to level, not too difficult so far. Just try not to get into a rut of "same skill usage" and it should be fine.

Of my three VR level characters (VR2 DK and VR6 Sorc), I find my Templar to be the most interesting by far. IMO.

    Good day!

Lots of cool spells and options.

Not hard to level at all.

Soloed everything from EP side (everything not designed to group like world bosses etc.) except a VR9 Whispmother quest boss, and a VR10 quest boss that also had his own personal healer (a guy named Hadran).

I am a heavy armor with 1h and shield temp.

Not EZ mode like bathrobe jerks spamming volcanic rune, but it works. Should get better as they work on balance.

I hit v12 today and done all quests v1-v9 (got v10 area left)

Around v7 i started taking huge amount of damage compared to v6 and down.

Its still been possible to do everything solo (quests) but a bit more annoying and with more deaths.

His math isn't so good, he has been saying the exact same broken thing in every thread today.

OP: I am VR8 Templar, it does get harder as you move up through the VR ranks, but 1-49 are a breeze. Ragekniv does have a point in resource management but with a few tricks and good useage of the radial you can keep magicka topped and with the new buffs I just pushed through a VR8 dungeon and dominated everything, even if they were 3 + a healer. So, things are looking up.

If you are a Solo player, then I would not do Templar.
    Stick with Sorcerer or DK.

If you are in a good guild, or have static group partner(s), then Templar can be great as the healing makes your team basically unbeatable in PvE.

    Just my experience

Breton Vampire Templar, V2 atm. Solo'd my way there, other then some world bosses, some pub dungeons, and obviously anchors. Was able to solo all the world bosses in coldharbour (out of necessity). Really easy to level to this point, no harder then my sorc. I'm starting to feel the lack of dmg a bit now but hopefully the buffs with help. If you're going to solo, don't build healer at first, it's gonna be super painful.

Get group healing skills and rotate them out so that you level them, but most of the time I just have honor the dead and rapid regen slotted on my solo bar.

    No.

And I'd ignore the FUD mongers about VR leveling. Leveling up VR is just as much easy mode as pre-VR. The only thing that would make it easier is if we had invis like NBs so we could sneak past/bypass the trash to bang out quests faster

I have a 25 Templar alt that was easy and fun to get up to that point. Started 2hander and went bow as my 2nd bar at 15. Sort of a "Ranger of Light" build.

1-50-VR5 are fun to level up. Around VR5, mob difficulty really starts to make the Templar's severe class issues apparent. Hopefully by the time you get to VR5, Zen will have fixed the class

I played a medium armor Bowplar build 1-50 and loved it. The combination of javalin plus scatter shot allowed me to solo anything that could be cc'd. Including zone bosses-with ease.

That bud was terrible for VR though. I decided to switch to a shield bash/biting jabs combo to handle VR mobs of 3 so that I could keep my medium armor Bowplar build for pvp and kiting bosses. Then shield bash got nerfed and I started dying. A lot.

VR2-4 I experimented with several builds. I respecced at least 6 times. I lvled up every Templar skill, most weapon skills, and several Mage guild/ fighters guild skills.this was painful and frustrating at times, because I had to find out the hard way what did and didn't work.

I finally said screw it and went full cloth. Grabbed a couple staves. I ditched all stamina and overcharged magicka and magicka recovery. I put 10 pts into health and grabbed The Lord mundis stone.

So now I have a bar for healing and a bar for solo questing. The heals are fun and. Very effective. At VR 7 I often get compliments on my healing. I use rest staff for the aoe and passives, otherwise I use all Templar abilities.

Dps is another matter. I learned the hard way that no weapon, build, or class ability rotation is competative or acceptable for groups. I can manage burst single target dps of 900 or so using a few different Templar/destro combos, but nothing sustainable due to rapid magicka depletion.

That is really the biggest hurdle for Templars at higher lvls. I chug magicka pots like they are going out of style. If we had sustainible magicka, we would be beast. As it is now, we are good healers and "ok" everything else.

    Question about Templar soloability....

I'm rolling a templar alt tonight or tomorrow....going to go full light armor and resto staff, although I will be using 1h 1m levelling up just for the skill...

I was planning on going with destro staff too for dps but from what I'm gathering resto alone is fine. Is that correct? Assuming I want to do the normal solo questing etc.

I was thinking about going altmer for the destro bonuses but if I'm not going with that I'll probably go Breton. Why do people say to go Breton for Templar healers anyway?

    Much appreciated.

you want to have both resto and destro when leveling, impulse is still the best AoE in game. Although in most cases resto staff is fine.

I use resto/destro, and honestly I find Biting Jabs much better than Impulse unless I am trying to farm Public dungeons with mobs of 4+

Reflective light/Wall of Elements/Biting Jabs is a pretty deadly combo vs 2 or 3
