Housing - what's the appeal

Let me first say, I'm not against housing, I just don't know what the big appeal of it is. I've never played an MMO with housing, so maybe I'm just guessing at what it brings, which is little more than a vanity gold sink. Am I missing something?

nah, you're not. it's exactly that - a vanity gold sink. BUT, my gf is so excited to see housing in this game and we did have a ball building out houses in skyrim, so I'm hoping it's going to be pretty cool.

I'm really hoping it's a lot like the skyrim build and I can put in crafting tables and shrines, etc, as well as additional storage (I loved building out safes in my basement for storage). I also loved being able to plant plants (columbine ftw) in a greenhouse for harvesting. I hope a lot of that gets implemented.

Well, whatever it is that attracts people to player housing, according to the Dev's they wont be experiencing it before a couple of years have passed...

Mostly it's an RP thing. But on the "useful" side I HOPE it will act as additional storage. I sincerely doubt houses will be free (yep, gold sink) but I'd rather pay outrageous prices for a cool place I can RP in and decorate than pay outrageous prices for just extra bag and bank slots. i also hope there will be guild housing from which you can access your guild bank and guild store.

If they make it so your house is in the actual world and takes up space that would be cool and create a market for real estate like in UO which was actually one of the cool / dumb things in the end because all the land would get bought up. Don't see that happening though.

I would also love to see housing implemented. The ability to have crafting and harvesting available to you, per your personal choices, was a great aspect implemented in Skyrim.

Understandably, we cannot expect them to allow us to run around and see everyone else's houses. The resources tied to this would be massive and not feasible in the least.

However, I would not be adverse to a little pocket dimension, or something similar, tied to a character. This would allow localization to the account, letting everyone's inner architect flourish, and eliminate the game resource issues tied to open world housing.

For me the appeal is storage and display.

In Skyrim we had display boxes, where you could place items for display.
We had Armour Dummies, which we could clothe in our aromus and appreciate the look.
We had Placques on the walls were we could display staffs and weapons.
We had weapon racks were we could store weapons, also a minor display.

That's ontop of chests and wardrobes and safes were we could store anything.
We also had crafting stations, which were nice too.

Now this being an MMO we won't get all of that, but if we get a few of them I will be happy.

Because it's just not the same standing on somebody else's lawn yelling at hooligans to get off of it.

Agree with all previous reasons: Storage, customization so that I can have a little personalized corner in this awesome world, RP, having a preferred place to log in an out, another gold sink (yes I want more of those), and so that I can finally tell people I invested in real estate.

For me it is something that lets me feel more at home in the world. It is a vanity money sink, sure. But if it is well done, it can also be something to do besides killing stuff.

Some place that I can put all the crafting stations together, and the my safety deposit is right under my bed.

It's nice, to own a virtual house. There's a reason why the Sims is one of the best selling franchise and is still going strong after so many years.

Sims 4 was recently announced in E3 btw. And it IS quite a hype.
People keep telling me they're gonna buy me an ale. They never do.

There are only two things I can't stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's culture. And the Elves.

Get those trophies out of the bank and on the walls. Maybe some dummies the stand around wearing the various disguises.

Somewhere for me to go steal all your stuff :).
But as already stated, probably not gonna have access to other peoples homes.
Shame, cos it would be so much fun.

I want my own place with crafting facilities, storage and access to my bank. A barn for my horses, an alchemists garden and a way to decorate. Would be nice not having to listen to annoying npc banter :D A bard would be nice though, to play me some instrumental..........hmm sounds like Skyrim.

You just emphasised why we won't have access to each others houses. Now I wouldn't mind letting people in to see my displays, mostly of junk trophies at the minute, provided they made it so nobody but me could touch them.

Skeevers, they are pack rats that steal anything shiny, or at least they did in Skyrim.

No, No, No, I'll hire some Senche to protect my house, I have a Khajiit character, he'll gladly convince them that a free roof plus steaks every day is a good wage, plus they get to eat anyone who tries to steal my stuff.

    Win-Win.

Exactly this. A single place from which to craft, bank, sell, and display items. By the time I can afford a house, I should have proven to the Devs that I am in it for the long haul, and should not longer be required to zone multiple times to perform my crafting, deconstructions, etc.

Only half-jokingly: Oh, and I want a stable, so I can feed my horses without having to log in, run from bank to stable, feed horse, and run back, too. (Yes, the time adds up. It takes me 15-30 minutes once a day to feed the ponies on my 7 played char's mounts. Thankfully, that will end at the 49th day for some, that won't be getting a speed horse.)

I feel like it's an essential part of the universe for me, but I'm one of those people that spent more time designing visual displays for their houses in Morrowind than actually playing, and in the end quit playing Skyrim because the physics killed me.

(What was the point in playing and doing all the cool quests if I couldn't display the rewards? I kept coming back to that and hating it.)

I hope when they implement it - if they do - they'll manage to meld the wonderful aspects of the single-player TES games to that of an mmo experience. There are obvious caveats - limitations needed to keep the game economy balanced etc - but I definitely would enjoy paying more for an actual house that comes with storage, rather than 10 virtual bag slots. I dunno, maybe have a monthly or weekly maintenance fee, + guards etc to keep the area safe. I'd love that, and it would provide an on-going, no-reward (to turn into more profit) gold sink for players that have virtually everthing else.

Really, though, I just want to be able to decorate and show off my characters history. If it weren't for such limited bag space, I'd be keeping that sword from killing Balreth, and so on for those quests that really had an impact on me.

I'm looking at you, Fort Zeref.

Side note: ZOS, you REALLLY REALLY need to provide closure to the fort zeref quest. It made me so sad.

Ok, I've read through the comments and I guess the idea of housing doesn't get me as excited as some people. I'd be happy just to have a trophy cabinet in the harbourage. It looks like housing would be something you gradually improve as you develop your character and it adds a bit of motivation to keep playing so whilst I don't think it should get high priority at the moment, I think I'd rather see it sooner than in 2 years time.
