I was looking at the Grahtwood map earlier, when I saw something interesting. There was a spot on the map I didn't remember- maybe I never noticed it, but there were roads in it, and I didn't remember any quests in the area. Thinking I may have missed something, I went to check it out...

socjTIL.png

What I found was a bit intriguing.

WnMasph.png

It's a small area. At first, it looked like it could be a tiny village.

9rCWO3n.png

The problem with that is...there are no people there. Not a single one. Not even a player in the area.

sCQQfnt.png

Soon after I entered, though, something caught my eye...

zZwoTHv.png

A house. The only one in the area, and just the right size for a weary traveler to hang his or her hat. The door is locked, so I can't get in, but I can only imagine what's inside...

The entire area is beautiful, and would make for a lovely player home. It also shows that good ol' Zenimax may be working on more than they're telling us! Thoughts, anyone? Similar experiences?

There are a few places like this in other maps, I'm guessing they are for future expansions. So they can slot in new quests and towns.

We might get the housing earlier than they said, but not by that much.

Well, aside from the actual houses, there are still numerous systems that have to be created, along with floor models for items, and furniture. Creating the houses is only the first step, but it signifies that something is starting.

I've found several areas that had no purpose, including a fortification in central Stormhaven and a villa in Alik'r near the Ritual Stone. There are also tons of buildings with locks on them in major cities. I just assumed they were planned for some future content. Housing didn't even cross my mind at the time.

Yes unfortunately IF we ever get housing in this game it would have to be instanced. There is no way the mega server could cope with the extra data of housing and the massive lag it would bring to areas of the game.

Unless they only have a small amount of housing which would also be a problem as everyone would want a house.
There was a big article back when Rift was bringing housing in explaining why these days it had to be done as Instanced due to massive server costs it would bring to the game if it wasn't and they had lots of 'servers' not just 2.

Housing would definitely be instanced, but likely in the same way that other content is instanced. You aren't seeing everyone online when you log in- you're seeing a small fraction of the players in the area. One instance. There are quite a few others- each megaserver has a few instances, which only has so many players per zone. Players are usually spread out fairly evenly throughout instances, which minimizes the server load and delivers an equal gaming experience to everyone.

ZOS does have a lot of Servers also, but they are acting like one BIG (mega) server. Even in RIFT, each shard is in fact a cluster of servers acting as one. ESO just take that idea to the next level by having all their shards / server clusters acting as one computer instead. At least to my understanding. I do agree, player house will be instanced.

What I found it is odd, it is on the live server -- not on the PTS server. Why is ZOS testing content ideas on the live server instead of their public test server? Very odd, indeed.

As I said, it's probably that they are for future content, they need some markers for when they slot the new content in, and the basic structures would act as those markers.

It would seem strange for a bunch of houses to pop up out of nowhere, wouldn't it? A bit better to keep them in the area, and tweak them silently, then have their purpose revealed.

Would it? I went round a friends house the other day, I hadn't been for a while. On the way I noticed that they had built a load of new houses. They popped up, out from nowhere.

However, I can't think of any empty houses anywhere...

I don't think, this could be Zenimax idea of housing. They said, when they make it, they want to make it right and to me the pictures above wouldn't implicate a right done housing.

More likely, there will be some more quests at a later point, maybe for some of the missing guilds or what so ever.

Could be cut content? A few bugged quests/quest areas were "fixed" by simply removing them, after all...

Players can choose a dragon tattoo so that means they are bringing dragons into the game. Don't ask why, I just have a feeling... :#

Well in Skyrim the Nord guards do mention that Dragons hadn't been seen in like a Thousand years......ESO is set about a Thousand years before Skyrim ;)

I wish there were more areas like this--just... places--houses, villages, caves--that have absolutely no purpose whatsoever.

One idea tossed around is that it is for Dark Brotherhood/Thieves Guild locations.

Indeed! I also like "out of the way" places for RP that aren't overrun with questors. So, whatever their eventual purpose, I really like this. I just wish we could go inside these empty buildings. Even without player housing being implemented, this would still be nice as a stop gap for the RP community. I do agree that actual housing would have to be instanced and why wouldn't you want it to be? I would only want myself and those I am grouped with to be able to go into my house.

I love going to places like this as well. It's a shame that some of them are blocked off by invisible walls or impossible-to-scale cliffs.
