What should I do with my templar?

I have a level 21 templar that I am taking my time with, experiencing the story, placing my skill points through out all the crafting sections and weapon and skill lines, I have 95% of my points into magic a couple into stam and one or two into health. But over all everything goes into magic. I also ware heavy armour (I hear there is a nerf to light armour coming?) - So I made sure to put the appropriate points into heavy armour and magic to be able to still cast spells with out too much of a hit.

I don't know what I should be aiming for with my templar. What kind of healing spells should I be taking since apparently - if you are not a healing templar you are not wanted (or a tank, mostly healing). Right now I have the basic healing spell and I don't even think I upgraded it, I know I can.

I just figured out the guildwars 2 like - weapon swap skill swap thing. and thats cool - bot my weapons are two handed, either sword or mace. I don't like staves ... and I personally hate bows - I would rather be all up in your face.

Thoughts on what direction I should take this character? When it comes to crafting I can do any of the crafting but I have a heavier emphasis on crafting metal weapons and armours.

As a fellow crafter I would warn against picking up too many crafts with one character. On my main I'm having to pick up skyshards from zones I haven't reached yet to access everything I need in my 4 crafts.

Templars are great fun, I think they are one of the most versatile and easy to pick up classes in the game in the early levels. Yes currently the DK is a better end game tank and the sorcerer and DK are better end game DPS. I think if you are enjoying the game play the way you want to and evolve the way you want to with skills you think will be useful for your playstyle.

I have an alternate lvl 21 Templar as well. I'm using one skill bar for mainly healing with a healing staff and one skill bar to tank/DPS with an axe and shield for everything else. I'm wearing mostly heavy with two lights pieces at the moment (want to keep my options open so I'm trying to level all three armour types to at least 25).

I usually fire off a sun fire (reflective light morph) first to get some fire damage over time going. If they don't have a range attack I wait for them to come to me and give them some puncturing strikes or push them back with piercing javelin. If they have a range attack or they are a sorcerer I will usually do a focused charge to them to get in close.

If there are going to be some undead I usually put silver bolts on my skill bar as well otherwise I go with a Templar heal or solar flare.

I need to work on my CC because currently I'm relying upon others or having to focus DPS in 1v1 so I can get to the next target. I'm also using the radial sweep because of how quickly the ultimate regenerates it is almost like having a 6th standard skill slot. I want to get a better ultimate so I have another option for boss fights.

As others will tell you the healing skills with the healing staff are as good as if not better than the Templar skills so if you want to be a healer would recommend unlocking some healing skills with the healing staff as well as the Templar class skills.

TL;DR - Blazing Spear is the best skill Temps have IMO

Some recommendations for easy mode templar:
If you have the money, respec your stats and skills. If not, dont sweat it.
Keep all points from hereon out of stamina. Between Magicka and Health your free to distribute however you want. Statting for health helps, but with abundant healing options outside of Resto staff Templars arent as constricted here as other classes are.

For armor 5L/2H. Or 7L. If you *really* like Heavy then 5H/2L.. but know that your not helping yourself any with that setup.

Weapon: Resto staff. Two of them in fact. Throw every other weapon in the trash. Now. Dont worry if your Resto staff skills are nil, because you dont actually need any of the abilities from the skill line. This is your mana battery, learn to love it.

    Skills:

Sun Fire The morph is up to you. I prefer Reflective Light.. not only for its 3 target aoe damage, but even more so for its 3 target snaring capability. This skill is the most optional of the three, but it comes highly recommended. If chain casting this spell ensure you aim at a different target each cast so that you spread the dot effect as well.

Spear Shards - Blazing Spear Morph This. This skill is your bread, your butter, your life. Get it on both of your bars (unless your 2nd bar is all healing) and never, ever take it off. Three reasons why this spell rules them all:

    1) Its a placable AoE. Put the damge exactly where you want it up to 28 m away.
    2) It stuns one target. It helps a bit to CC, but makes this and the next effect worth using it even in single target.
    3) The Blazing Spear morph makes this ability pulse every half second for 15 damage for a total of 90 damage over 6 seconds. Now remember two things here, the target (or at least one of them) will be stunned for two seconds of this. The other thing not to forget is what makes this an awesome ability is Aedric Spears Burning Light passive. (Gives 25% chance on hit to deal x magic damage.) This is nothing to scoff at. Those measly 15 damage ticks every half second can proc Burning Light (and remember, this is AoE with unlimited? targets). Burning Light hits for something around 80% of what the inital spell does (number crunchers get off me). So around 50ish you're looking at AoE of 200ish damage, with 6 seconds of 15 dps capable of proccing another 150ish (that can crit) per second, and its all AoE. I have found that most boss mobs are not immune to the stun this provides either. If all this crap wasnt enough, remember that this ability contains an activatable synergy by companions.....restoring a good bit of stamina. Nobody really cares about stamina but.. I tend to intentionally throw this on top of my tank while grouping, for nice aoe damage..a stun cc to help the tank a little, and he can push X to restore stamina for taunting whenever he wants.

Rushed Ceremony Morph again up to you. If you are 100% solo then Honor the Dead is a good way to go. If you even remotely think you may serve as a healer .. then go with Breath of Life. Unlike Healing Ritual this heal is instant, and has more than double the effective range. Get this on both bars, and keep it there.

These are the big required three, I'll cover a few honorable mentions.

Puncturing Stikes - Take this if you like it. I for one want to the avoid the stigma of being mistaken for a bot.. and more importantly I have no desire to stand in melee range if it can be avoided.. especially not if I have to channel something (read:not blocking) while there.

Piercing Javelin Not a bad skill, but definitely not worth any of your 5 slots. It's single target CC, and nobody uses single target CC. If your only up against a single opponent why would you even need CC? If your in trouble you have a heal button....that and this actually doesnt work on most boss mobs anyway.

Sun Shield Dont even bother with this until VR, and even then specialized builds. Its very useful for the niche builds that use it though.

Solar Flare Great ability. Hits like a truck. This spell is about as much *synergy* as your going to get on a Temp. The morphs change the spells usage drastically. You either keep it Mage-plar friendly with the original or Dark Flare morph, or you morph it into point blank AoE goodness. Due to the cast time you will probably find yourself only casting it once per fight as opener (really does hit like a truck), but the Solar Barrage morph drops its damage below that of Blazing Spear. I chose to go with Dark Flare, but your choice. For AoE it has no home on my bar, and even Dark Flare only saw situational use due to the cast time.

Backlash Great ability for groups. Soloing with this isnt practical, because those precious 7 seconds will go by oh-so-fast while your dodging, kiting, blocking, and doing anything other than DPSing to reach the cap.

Eclipse Great for shutting down casters, but I find Death works better at shutting down casters. The stun portion of Blazing Spear does this job well enough. Save Eclipse for pissing of Sorcs in PVP.

Blinding Light Niche spell. Can be fun for DW builds in tandem with Ember Explosion. (AoE damage + 90% miss chance). Highly unecessary at your level.. maybe something to toy with in VR, but ultimately holding your skirt up while running backwards like a scared girl is more effective for avoiding attacks.

Clensing Ritual Nice regen with synergy in the Temp tree that makes it better than Resto staff Regeneration, however its ground based, meaning you and your teammates have to stand in it to benefit. It has a reasonably large area though so that isnt hard, but there will always be someone who steps outside of it. Regeneration doesnt have this problem. If your going full healer why not use both?

Rune Focus Neat ability. Pretty small radius you have to stay in, but its doable. Insane amounts of armor and spell res.. but... my spell res is soft capped with just 5L armor before casting this.. and armor.. well.. if that was worth anything more people would be wearing heavy, wouldnt they? Play with it and see if you like it, but again consider holding your skirt and walking backwards instead.

    Lastly Ultimates:
Radial Sweep - Great DPS on paper. Not as useful in practice IMO. Its dirt cheap and AoE, but this is the worst of the 3 options in my opinion.

Nova - Your damage ultimate. Its more expensive than it should be... but if you need widespread aoe damage this does the job. Either morph is acceptable. Stacking this on top of Sun Fire dot on top of Blazing Spear on top of heavy resto staff attack to regain mana is pretty decent DPS.

Practiced Incantation - The best ultimate. Someone is going to jump out and crucify me for this I'm sure, but. Its fairly inexpensive and pre 50 is basically an "I WIN" button. No .. it wont kill anyone, but for 4 seconds nothing is really going to be able to kill you or anyone near you either. Especially with the passives to increase armor/spellres while doing it. I personally go with Practiced Incantation Morph for an extra two seconds of this. At VR levels this changes, and groups of more than 2 will *** you for while using this, but while leveling this is golden. If you're especially good at playing, you can actually remove Rushed Ceremony from your bar and reserve your ultimate pool & pots for emergency healing freeing up another slot.

    Thats it.

Edit: I forgot to mention this because generally it goes without saying. Get Magelight > Inner Light Morph on your bar somewhere.. and keep it there.

there is nothing but buffs in that post so I am not worried about the future of templars.

As for the rest of the posts thanks for the input I have mostly been using whats linked in the post in the quote there, in terms of offensive magic so I am glad to see that get increased.

As time goes on, I'd get all the skills and passives. Huge amount of utility in Templars. You can swap things in and out for different bosses and encounters.

    This area has X monsters, I'll use Y ,Z and H skills.

Question. Do you plan melee or caster Templar?

    a) If you want melee char, the best advice a VR8 Templar melee char can give you (like me) is stop there.
Think about it, look at the mirror of someone that is going to face frustration on PvP and VR levels, and either roll an NB, DK or even SC.

During 1-50 the Templar is a blast, so was also in Cyrodiil during betas and the first weeks on live.

However is not now, because of all the OP abilities the DK and SC have. (along with destro staff).

    b) If you go as caster. Full set light armour, destruction staff qbar 1, restoration staff qbar 2. Again DK/SC/NB are better also.

The best support skills you have for Cyrodiil are Ritual and Eclipse.
You will never manage to pull extensive healing, and you need to break the Pulsar stacks, while casting your own.

And the upcoming update on Templars is as pathetic as possibly can be.
Nothing changes. Still having big resource management issues, because the devs did a damn half job.

We had cheap spells (like the other classes) and good magicka management (passive).

However during beta they doubled and tripled the costs of the Templar spells, because of the passive was deemed OP. And then just the days before the early access they remove the passive! Leaving in place the high costs of the spells.

    So go figure.
(and they haven't reverse it back, they just "adjust" some pathetic spells).

While on the other hand Sorcerers & especially DKs with Light armour and destro staff, can spam all sorts of stupid spells that are killing the PvP aspect of the game.

Templars going to be a very good class to play (even melee), when Eclipse affects AoE and Ultimates, and we have a proper AoE CC also.

    @Fuxo

    I agree mate.

On VR content my Templar is basically a melee Vampire.

3 2H skills, Invigorating Drain, Degeneration or Volcanic rune or Breath of Life (rarely). In medium armour. (5MA 2LA)

Why medium? Because damage is capped with GS + Hunding Rage + Rally + Flawless Dawnbreaker, HA provides nothing. And you can get rid Flawless Dawnbreaker also if you put a legendary or epic power glyph on.

Same goes with Rally. The moment we put our hands on gold weapons, it goes since we almost on the cap.

The whole build has it's frustrating moment but is generally ok, if you want to play a melee oriented character and not care about min max.

Honestly? Then I can understand why we were left with a gimped class, and why my Templar in the beta seemed so much more playable than my current one. I never paid close attention to the numbers in beta, because I was busy just playing.

Everybody love a healer in the group.
    Temp does everything 1-50 fine.

There are many complain about pvp. But it will likely be fixed when you get there.

Biting jabs is one button win all through coldharbour.

Rushed ceremony and rite of passage is all what a dedicated temp healer need.

In the meantime, level up restoration staff and light armour just in case. In fact, wear 5 light, 1 heavy, 1 medium so you can level all of them, who knows what future patches will bring.

I have several temps in various configurations ranging from lv 20-40. Here are a few things. Pick one craft per toon. I have one practicing each craft. You have way too many points in magica. You will be hitting the soft cap pretty hard. You need to increase your health to be able to survive. For stamina use try adding the fighters guild line's Silver Bolts. It is a nice ranged ability that can stun a mob and is useful when you run out of magica. What race are you? Bretons make good temps.

BTW, Biting Jabs is my fav attack.

I am hearing a lot of "templars suck" and I am almost considering re-rolling a new main. How ever I also feel like sticking it out because over time SOC and DK will be nerfed. its inevitable.

I plan to be mostly melee , I hate staves to be honest and as for the whole "go light armour" Its being nerfed from what I have read here on the forums (cannot find the exact post, but there are a lot of complaints about it).

I, as stated: mostly did: 95% magica / 3% stam / 2% health, with heavy armour and a passive for heavy armour and magic use. Every enchantment I equip on armour or ring or jewellery I get is +x magic. So until this light armor "complaining" dies down or the patch notes are released I am going to stick with heavy armour.

With that said, I find the spells, puncturing strikes and piercing javelin along with nova, solar flare and sun fire and then rushed ceremony for healing to be doing the job. because I am two handed I also use, critical strike and upper cut first and then attack with my spells.

Note: I just realised there is no passive for helping with magic casting on heavy armour and that I use Resolve, because most of the enemies I face are casters it seems.

I use a two handed mace and a two handed sword, the mace has lightening and the sword does disease.

Am I doing ok or is this a "facepalm, your doing it wrong ... "

Honestly, I recommend that every class, every race, and every build pick this one up. Even if you don't keep it on your skill bar most of the time, pop it on there when you know you're facing undead or daedra. IMO it's one of the most effective things to have when running a dolmen, and there are tons of times when it comes in handy - especially if you're a magicka build.

Level 49 Templar here. Can't speak to VR content yet, which I hear can be brutal, but love Biting Jabs so far. I tend to start with Dark Flare on toughest enemy, Reflective Light right after which will hit 3 mobs for bonus damage because Dark Flare makes next non-Dark Flare attack do extra damage. Then Silver Shards as a stamina-dump/magicka-saver which will again hit 3 mobs (and knock 1 down if Daedra/Undead). By that point, mobs will be in my face but hopefully < 50% health and Biting Jabs can then shred them with 70% critical hits.

Things can be trickier if archers or healers are involved. I will likely start the same but use Explosive Charge to zoom in and interrupt archer/healer. Then concentrate on killing them as soon as possible. But now I am in melee range of everybody which can be dangerous. Volcanic Rune from Mages Guild can be helpful here to take everybody out of commission for a couple seconds, but it can be a pain to look straight down at the ground and away from the fight to locate it properly. It is easy to set as a trap ahead of time, but annoying to set centered on yourself if in the middle of a pack of mobs and need a few seconds to catch your breath. Not as much of a problem to locate the AoE circle in 3rd person, but I don't like 3rd person. I feel like a puppet master controlling a marionette.

I started as 5 Light / 2 Heavy, but now do 7 Light. The extra spell cost reduction helps because we temps are always running out of magicka. Also, I can use Ransack from the 1H+S line to boost my armor if I am in a fight that seems to need extra armor. It does a Taunt, but if you are doing solo PvE who cares? The enemies are already coming after you and you alone. And you don't have to stay in a little circle on the ground with Ransack. The armor boost follows you around. 1H+S is normally seen as a Tank line, but for a squishy Light Armor caster it can actually help balance you out and give some extra survivability. If you are using mostly class and guild skills for killing things, weapon choice is not a big deal. Why not go with something that mitigates damage to counteract a weakness of my build?

My attributes are 60% magicka, 40% health, 0% stamina. With enchantments, that keeps me near softcap for both magicka and health. I am Imperial and we get a max health boost as a race passive. Otherwise, I might have gone 40% magicka/60% health. I am a big fan of health. I think it is better to be alive and have to chug a magicka potion than to be dead and have some magicka left.

If you dont like staffs and like to be up in peoples faces then youll have to change your attributes to 80-100% health and use gear to get you magicka or stamina. Youll also need sunshield, its the best "in your face" skill for templar.

Your going to need something to mitigate damage in the weapons trees so use 1h/shield as a back-up with your 2h.

For crafting, focus on 2-3 crafts or you'll be low on skill points.

For weapons, destory / restro staves are much better than everything else.

Magica based builds does most damage, your class skills also, I believe, mostly go by magica and uses magica and you'll want some stamina to block and dodge, why there are stamina based skills in this game is just strange to me. Especially since magica based skills do scale better.. if you want to use class based skills and stamina based skills you'll have to split focus and then you will not be doing as much damage / heals.
Also, stamina based builds do work, they just do less damage than magica based.
The current system is a bit screwed.

As a VR4 Nightblade I just decided today it's time to roll my first alt. Mostly to share the crafting load with my main but also I need something to break up the VR grind some, too. Found myself really close to unsubbing to refresh the batteries and let some of the balancing happen but I don't want to. I really love the game just been a bit frustrated with it.

Was thinking about going with a cloth resto/destro staff Templar but I really don't know a lot about any other class besides nightblade. Templar is the only other one that appeals to me. Just sat down to do some research when I came across this thread, go figure.

So from what I'm reading, since this is an alt, would I be better off going sorc with that setup? I really like the idea of having a support toon but soloability and fun factor are considerations beyond being set on any particular class. Just don't want to be a nightblade with this toon and would like to be great in a healing role. One would think temps would make for great healers because of the class line, no?

Honestly, there are a few options available, maybe as you favor heavy, melee and tanking may suit your style.

I like this class because its not weapon dependent but if you tank you would need taunting so sword/board seems a good choice.

    I'm 1/2 way rthrough VR 10 as a have 1H /S templar with 2H bakup.

As it stands currently you can do 2H to at least VR5.. VR 6+ is very defensive play for up close people at the moment. 2H is very offence oriented. I'm sure you could put the skill together to do it. I used my maul for some delves at VR8, but it was harder than with 1H and Sh.

with 1H and shield I block 90% of the time and use a lot of light attacks to kill people (mixed with Blazing Spear AOE dot and Deep slash (from 1h/s)

2 H I use channeled focus a lot to help offset no sheild.

You'll want to have a decent amount of STA if you are going to use 2H skills frequently to boost their damage.

If someone is using 2H in V6+, has to play like they did in Oblivion & Skyrim unfortunately, not like we do in a MMOs.

Crouch, go behind the opponent and quickly hit uppercut. Is doing 2000+ damage, enough to kill the mobs with the follow up executioner. It also works even on dungeon bosses, when they are spawn of 3, to take out one fast, and then focus on the others.

It helps if you are wearing medium armour and you are a Khajiit also. But you need to go from behind. Is a tactic I am trying to master especially against 3 man spawns. If I can take one fast, the other two will follow, and uppercut is the most lethal hit to do when stealthed tbh.

Because is not class dependant tactic, I believe an NB with their on demand stealth ability (1st one on Shadow line) can mop up the whole VR content solo, without much hassle, compared that I am trying to sneak with my Templar.

And since I start using it more and more to solo dungeons, I am strongly inclined to start playing an NB asap.

(DKs are too OP for my taste, and need some challenge tbh).
