This thread has it all! In my ever so humble opinion oil pots are fine. AGAIN, if you haven't figured out how to counter something, ask for advice. A slew of 'how-to-survive' information here. Most of it actually falls into the 'common sense' category.

I did chuckle at someone bringing up the history of siege. Apparently shooting fireballs from a wooden stick is never questioned but the line is drawn at hot oil being poured on the ground at your feet !!!!!

I agree they need to be looked at, they should only be able to be used in keeps/towers/outposts, and should only be able to be dropped from a height not at you're feet.

The fact you can go in the middle of a open field and drop oil anywhere is f'in ***, so yeah make it so it hurts you maybe if you drop it at you're feet or you have to be at a certain height to place it, should also only be able to place it in keeps... etc.

The only problems with oil are oil in resource towers and oil in the non siegeable npc houses/buildings.

Solution: allow us to siege our own resource towers if enemy players are inside them, and disable placing oil inside non siegeable npc houses.

Edit: what's wrong with placing oil in open field battles? If you're dumb enough to walk into it in the field where you can just walk around or stand out of range and pew pew, then sorry but YDI.

Oil is so easy to counter, it's funny. Because they only really hurt when the DoT initiates, you can use any skill that removes the negative effect. Also, don't just stand there waiting for more oil to hit you, run up the stairs, past the oil and hit the people on the oil from behind, that way you have the advantage, and you can cc them, then you can just burn their oil and they have no defence.

    Simple strategy.

The problem with oil is that instead of being a powerful yet specialized tool, they are a catch-all solution.

Wanna defend a tower? Oil. Wanna AOE on flat ground? Oil. Oil didn't solve your problem? Add more oil.

I liked oil in DAoC. There was one spot it could be put on - above doors - and it could help outnumbered defenders to stall the attacking force until help came.

There was only one oil at a time, and when it got destroyed (and you could aim the ballistae upwards, not like in eso), there was a cooldown before another could be placed.

It was not an "i-win" solution, only one of many tools.

I hope your not serous with this because if you bothered reading the post you would have realized this is not about one or 2 pots hitting you this is about 6 or more all hitting the same spot. go play pvp for 1 minute and see now that 90% of fight are based around oil pots and LOTS of them piled in one or more small places.

The only problem is I can roll a lvl 10 alt on an enemy faction and solo (and unchallenged) destroy all resource towers in preparation for my incoming zerg.

I understand other classes will have a hard time with that, but bolt sorcs have no excuses. We should be a MUST for all sieges.

Pretty standard avoidance scheme implemented in all games: Don't stand in the red stuff. Really, large red circle on the ground is your warning that you are doing it wrong.

What was it Ludacris said? "Move B**ch, get out da way"

    Sounds like winning ;) Profit.

I'm sorry what, did you even read my post? I said we should be able to siege our own towers if enemies are inside them.

What you just said about rolling an enemy alt to destroy towers for your zerg makes no sense in relation to my post.

    - It's your tower
    - You roll an enemy alt to put inside the tower? How do you get it in there?
    - For your incoming zerg? Why is your zerg coming to your tower unless enemies are already in there?
    - How would this solo sieging your own tower be preparing for your zerg arriving?

You really don't see how absurd this would be? Serious question. Some people might actually not see the ramifications.

I have said it before, and will again and again til its fixed. Oil pots are just WRONG. Chuckleheads that say learn to 'x' to avoid them refer to classes that are considered OP and use those skills at will versus the masses who may not have such a tool.

Bottom line, why is it a solo 'tool' would set up an oil pot in an open field to fight off multiple players at once. Its because the mechanic allows for unrealistic behaviour with massive damage to many players at once.

Oil pots need to be realistic, as in dumped from above.

Why do you think no one runs around dropping meat bags or ices in open areas. (As much damage just a little more over time).

its gotten worse now you have invisible people using oil pots and putting down and pouring in 1-2sec flat. go to 30 day and watch oil pots being poured with no one there. and no its not lag.

Just keep moving and use purge. But it should be more immersive if oil deals some damage to the user if the pot is placed on flat ground. It may encourage people to place oil pots on walls, not in a small room.

Regardless on how they can be avoided, the idea that you can pout the oil on a flat surface was not intended. Thats not what oil pots were made for historically. This needs to be changed.

And I'm pretty sure the fire ballista historically wasn't made either for you to stand in a spot fighting enemies while another group member/guildy/your_faction_pug shoots at the same spot, as well as historically Nova wasn't used right next to you, or pulsar, or lightning flood, or the storm atronach, or the standard of might, or whatever other AoE skill (or any damaging skill for that matter) are available.

All of you crying for self-oil-damage will be equally the first to cry when suddenly everything gets friendly fire, you can't go out whining "THIS NEEDS SELF-DAMAGE, BUT NOT THAT, BECAUSE I NEED THAT/STAND IN THAT/USE THAT/yadda yadda".

All in all this whole OP boils down to "I ran in, I don't know how to play, I got killed, nerf plox!" There are enough hints/tips in this thread to get you on track to avoid oil. If you still can't figure out how to avoid oil / beat the oiler, you may want to rethink what you're doing in Cyro in the first place...
