I love the game, will still unsubb this month - why?

First of all this is no "unsubb" rant thread. Actually I wanted to give my honest opinion from a medicore player (I play a lot in my free time, but don´t call myself hardcore) to the dev team who developed this nice piece of software.

I really enjoyed the game from lvl 1 to 50. It was a great experience even without listening to any of the quests or reading any book or lore text. I´m just one of those guys who can´t stand in front of a npc for a minute or two and listen. I need constant action :) (I need to apologize for this since I know how much work it is to do those texts and voice overs).

So, after level 50 the veteran content. Many player complained about the difficulty, but this was actually the only thing that kept me playing. It was the feeling that it got really hard and that I do something that not everyone was doing. By the way, I had 5 friends who bought ESO with me and leveled up to 50 with me. I lost them by the additional quest grind of the veteran level. Its just to "repetative". Yeah I know, each quest is unique and tells a small story. Actually for the most of us those are just quests. And in my eyes what I do all day long is "quest grinding" ..
On the other hand, don´t change that. I believe that its my own fault for being the player which I am. Its not your game, its me. I skip everything and only walk to the next curser on the minimap.

Oh, btw, your quest system is REALLY good. I always say this when I can quest without reading a single piece of text :) (for some quests I do needed to read the quest since riddle ^^ or use google :P)

Now, I´m almost veteran 10 and my sub is running for another 10 days. I will probably reach my goal by then and get vet10.

After that I actually don´t know what to do.

There are several things that just keep me thinking about unsubbing to your game.
No question I will come back when it improves (hopefully if I don´t find another game which hooks me, you know how players are).

- the responsiv of weapon swapping. This really frustrates me if I want to swap to my "healing" bar and get killed because I press the button once, it don´t reacts, I press it again and it double swaps back to the original bar.

- the responsiv time of skills. it happens many times that I try to heal myself, die (which is ok) but then after I resurrect the character HEALS himself. So.. the input was done, but not executed fast enough.

- cyrodiil and pvp. this is something where I don´t want to argue about the system itself. It depends on each person if they like the zerg festival or not. its about the lags and bugs. you really should have put your servers to EU. the excuse "we didn´t know the EU impact" .. please guys, just look up the skyrim sales or oblivion sales. you could have known that there are a lot of EU players wanting this game badly.

I really would like to have a 1vs1, 2vs2, 3vs3, 5vs5 mode etc. Just basic TDM or based on points what ever. small scale pvp where you actually can enjoy the individual skill of each character. I think this game (or the basic mechanics) would really suit small scale pvp.

- the lack of endgame content (gear wise and content wise). I know you are working on it, but please think about the following words. most MMOs START when you reach endgame. gear grind, daily grind etc. some of us really like that (others hate it I know). we like to improve constantly and work for our loots.
it would be great to have sets that are worth farming.

- let us upgrade every piece of armor to a higher level
see, you have generic number values for gear. why not scale it like players would like to have it. let us make a level 1 chest to a veteran 10 chest. this would increase the amount of different styles much but also make low level sets viable for higher content. additional to that.

I spend now a lot of currency to craft VET10 legendary, but can throw them away when the new update comes out? mhm, not very tending to do that. I really would like to upgrade my gear. then make it lose 1 quality level or so, but let me keep the sets that I find and got used to wear.
for example I will probably never exchange the warlock set or magicka furnace set because I just got used to have that much magicka to play with.

so, those are overall some impressions. I bet you know best whats currently wrong. but before I finally hit vet10 and leave I wanted to tell you my opinion :)

maybe something improves maybe not. I hope so because then I´ll be back enjoying another spin with this nice piece of software.

Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks, as they say. I listen to every word NPCs speak, and I love the questing, which I don't view as 'grinding' at all.

That said, I do NOT look forward to the veteran content which, as I understand it, involves ~repeating~ the quests I've already done on alts. Once, sure, it's great stories, great fun, but the second and third time, less so.

I don't PvP at ALL, so the entirety of Cyrodiil is pretty much wasted programming from my point of view. Some people love it, though, and that's fine.

I, for one, do not believe that the "real" game begins at the END game.

There was a Penny Arcade webcomic recently where one character was listing all the things he did NOT do in the game, the standard "grinding" and so on, and yet, he said, he had FUN... the other character then observed that he had 'wasted' his night. ;)

Site's down at the moment, for some reason, or I'd provide a link.

In any event, in the rush to "end game", skipping over all the voicework and detailed stories and lore and such, one cannot help but miss a large portion of what the game offers. Just like I am "missing out" on all the effort they have put into Cyrodiil and the PvP game.

I cringe to think about how hard it must be to design a game that appeals to so many VARIED kinds of gamer. It's quite an accomplishment that we two apparently quite different players both derive enjoyment from our respective favorite areas of the game.

I just hope they can keep up the balancing act to keep everyone engaged; there is that danger, after all, that in trying to please everyone, they end up LOSING everyone .

Well, you wrote you might come back later hopefully that will be the case.

There are a few things I would point out though that I don't understand or don't agree with.

First, you said you don't like talking to npcs, which is okay but I don't understand then why you picked a TES game which has a lot of it :P but. You are almost VR 10 so it is ok I guess since you didn't let it get in your way.

Secondly, you, and others, said they don't like doing the same quests while leveling up their alts. So let me ask you, in which games did you get totally different quests for each and every alt you created?

You also wrote that crafting is sort of pointless since Craglorn is almost here. Well yes, I agree that right now I wouldn't go for crafting op vr10 gear, in most mmos you also farm raids or dungeons for the best gear for months just to trash it with the first quest in the next expansion. And whether farming the same dungeons over and over again or doing quests (which are familiar from the second character on) is a better solution, I agree that it depends on people too.

As for pvp, I just spent my whole afternoon in Cyrodiil as a vr 1 player for the first time since lvl 10 (didn't even enter since) and I had a blast! I forgot how much of a fun it is, I joined both bIg zergs and smaller groups and I found both fun, though I preferred the latter. We captured resources, keeps, even castles, we lost all but one Elder Scrolls, almost all castles and keeps but after some time we managed to retaliate and take back several keeps to get back around the third of the map. It was fun!

Anyway, I just wanted to point these out, maybe we will see you later!

Thanks for the fresh perspective OP!

It's interesting to note that many of the things you enjoyed were things I don't enjoy. VR are the beginning levels over again...but instead of a Huge daedra lord kicking my butt...a mudcrab i accidental kicked as i was walking offshore did.

I swear I will always respect mudcrabs after this. It almost reminds me of evercrack...you know, where at level one you ran if there were more then 2 rats coming at you. rats....

except this was all after killing (or almost killing) one of the most powerful daedra lords in the game. heck, in many ways he was actually EASIER then a group of 2-3 mudcrabs!

And i enjoy the exploring. yada yada...all good overall. sounds like we both enjoyed (enjoying) the leveling experience.

And I fully agree with your complaints about the delays, and lag. although perhaps a move to a EU server may help that. but i get it in the US as well, so hopefully they will also be able to change whatever is causing the delays or the "skill misses" as i call it. you trip a skill, and it doesn't execute.

All in all, bethesda had decided that they would release the game as a "leveling and exploring game" and add in the level cap stuff later on. This game really is designed around the leveling experience...as are all other ES games. You can certainly skip allot of that detail (I personally don't read every lorebook out there, but I enjoy the quest details).

But just because you skip it doesn't mean that its not valid game content. It's just not game content that you like :)

And i understand. if they completely killed PvP in this game...the only thing I would miss was the extra skyshards. On that note...they couldn't do 1v1 or 5v5 in this game without HUGE amounts of class balance. the imbalance at this point between the classes is monstrous.

I honestly think thats part of the reason that they went with the larger scale siege style of PvP...to eliminate individual contribution so they wouldn't have to balance classes exactly against each other. This last paragraph is my own personal interpretation mind you.

You know what will cause me to unsub? one, if they force me to do group content to level to vr12. vr1 - 10 is enough as it is...currently all of craiglorne is group only. if i have to group up just to get to vr12 to get to the next areas that are released, I will quit. grouping should be an option.

Bot's will kill me too. the worst botting I've seen in a game to date. And I've played some serious asian grindfests, so I've seen botting.

@temjiu‌ Veteran leveling is too boring and IMHO a stupid/rushed idea.

PvP is a big part of the end game. But Cyrodiil as the only PvP "mode" ? It isn't a ridiculous zergfest like GW2 but it's still lame.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Cyrodiil is bad. It is fun, but most ppl find it boring and repetitive after some days playing it.

And a small group PvP in Cyrodiil is still a big group. Yes, you can find even 1v1 situations on Cyrodiil, but it's very different than having an 1v1 or 2v2 arena.

And even without small group PvP there will always be alot of crying about balance, like in EVERY game.

Overall, this game is nice but it is FAR from being a huge success. Of course there is alot of ppl on this forums that like the game(myself included), because this is the official forums, but even here some are getting real bored of it. And not because of rushing content (I personally didn't), but because of the lack of content, or non repetitive content.

And being honest, I like the game but I won't act like a blind fanboy deluding myself and thinking that only a few people is cancelling their subscription.

The fact is that ALOT of people got disappointed with some core things in the game and didn't continued playing after the first month. (ex: I'm the only one from my friends that kept playing)

And now many people is getting really bored with the game and will cancel their subscription.

    Sad, but true. =(

I noticed that you use the phrases "each and every" and "totally different quests", which takes the argument to the extreme. Most MMORPG's have some variety when playing alts (different starting areas based on race, for example), and many games will give you a completely different playthrough if you play a different faction. This game runs you through all of the content on one character. There is nothing new to see by playing an alt (in any faction). If you play and alt you will get to run all the exact same quests all over again.

for me "endgame" of a MMO is defined as the path you walk until you have the best gear available. Most times this means that you need to reach the final level and then put additional effort into the game to get you character pumped up to the final stage of this content part.

I know that MMOs have actually no real "end" to them, however in TESO I fell that I will reach the "end" which would make me unsub.

if its true that the addon will come in the coming weeks I would be happy to stay. Hopefully they tackle a lot of problems that are currently in the game.

thx for your opinion guys :) really appriciated it

I hope you stay. I love the game myself and don't see negative points except i work for the enemy in VR level (So i let people die and don't save villages where i can during quests in the VR areas).

Problem is that i will ONLY unsub if the subs get to low. Because no subs=low population=no PvP. So i want people to stay.

don´t worry, I´m not one of those rage quitters who just unsub because something is wrong. I know how game development works and how "slow" it can go for certain topics. however, if a game don´t have content which I can play then I just can´t stay subbed. I always return to games that I liked when they update their content (like SWTOR for example) but at a certain point if I find a "new love" I probably stay with that game until it gets boring. :/

thats just how it is for me

    Hi.

Sounds like you where expecting WoW in an ESO environment.

You did all these things, and still you didn't mention even half of the things you can do in the game other then level, gear, skill, kill bosses.

I think you did the mistake like several have, and maybe its simply so that ESO isn't your type of game. Racing to highest level isn't THE goal. Its one of 50, at least, goals.

And when you said Repetative quests, that just explained it. You didnt go around the zones much on your own...did you?

How many quests did you encounter that was ONLY dialog and nothing else then picking what you say, and what you say had effects?

Or did you find any wierd looking huge ugly beast that you havnt seen in the game before? Those things don't show up on the "Autoquest" mod.

Try play the game...not grind it. I agree, Grinding is boring. I havnt done a single second of grinding in the game, and I played every day since 5 days early release. Sure, I am not level 50 yet, but will get there. I am FULL of experiences, that I had no clue I was gonna run into.

Well, right now I can`t think of too many games that gives more than one zone for each level phases (like 1-10, 11-20 etc.), there are some but I don`t think it is always the case. But still, if you pick a different faction in another game, it is only new for so long too.

Don`t get me wrong, I would also have prefered if VR 1-10 would had been optional, but I also like the fact that you get to see other alliances. As curious as I sometimes was in other games, I never played on the opposite faction, here, I actually don`t mind, I just think of it as seeing through the eyes of a soldier in the opposite faction.
