We need Portal Magic!!!!!

Rakky
Rakky
I know there are Way-Shrines in the game that function as "portals" per say, but I have done so many quests that involve Portal Magic that I find it very intriguing that it is not considered for later updates.

I also think it can be included in the Mages Guild skill line or in the World skill line. This would greatly benefit a Sorcerer class player to immerse more into the magic-like play style.

What do you people think?

You already can teleport. it just seems you want to bypass having to pay if you aren't near a waysrhine.

Purely from a gameplay point of view, I would agree with the Argonian - there are already several ways of porting in the game, including the very useful ability to port to any player in one of your guilds, not just wayshrines. But being able to create portals could be indeed a nice addition "to immerse more into the magic-like play style", as the OP says. It could even be cumbersome and impractical, just as an interesting play style element...

No we do not need any more portals at all. It was pretty much the thing that ruined the main story and the guild stories for me. World quest lines are 1000000X better since they generally do not have any damn portals involved .
I was so happy to finish with the blind portal opener .

/Portals = we didn't have time/bothered to fit these quest in the world and make them part of the exploration. :(

''Portals'' burn them with fire .

They even have some quests that make fun of the portal magic plot device.

One does not simply walk into Coldharbour.

Or halfway across nirn for that matter. While portal use can get gratuitous, it is just as often necessary.

I don't think we need portal spells with the fast travel system that already exists, but what WOULD be cool is if the spellcrafting option they are adding would allow you to choose a portal like animation rather than the starcraft deal that goes on now. Also, i'm highly in favor of player based guild skills that can be rank based....like giving a portal option only useable in raid groups to a GM or officer rank would be badass.....maybe have a material cost or an opening cost to prevent abuse.

If they made me walk to some portal that was hidden somewhere in the world then use that portal to get to some weird place.Maybe forgivable. In this game we have an old man in damp cave opening portals from time to time.

Imagine if Gandalf knew that dumb portal spell. :D

I understand you all. But since I see soo many mages opening portals with glyphs under them (like the pseudo-Gandalf-dump-portal-spell the latter mentioned) I kind of wanted to use similar spell. I feel out of the group :/

*Maybe yea, in the spellcrafting we might get like an animation to the portal spell we use or EVEN later on, when or if Guild Castle/Cave/Houses/Towers..whatever it occurs to the Developers, we might have a portal spell for our fellow guildies.

***The LEVITATION is a MUST! God I would LOOOVEEE to do that, I dunno like Flyff(Fly For Fun) Psykeeper class.*** XD

Also, no, I have no problem in paying the low fee to teleport to a wayshrine, lol.

Wouldn't teleportation spells fall under Mysticism? If so, let's hope its one of the spells that might be added in when the spellcrafting feature is released. I'm all for it.

Add a roped off area in towns/cities/villages that you have to attune your character to. Then allow instantaneous travel to any you are attuned to for a moderate to mod. high amount of magicka while outside of battle. Would be a great addition imo.

Oh no, please no portals. There's already enough VR10s who sound like the most exploration they've done was cruising on a horse on a road. Adding portals will just make people not bother to explore at all. And they already whine that there is not enough content or not enough resources (!!!) to gather. If portals are added to the game the whining will only get worse.

And levitation... yeah, I know it was in almost all previous installments of the series (except Skyrim, i think) but man, it will be ridiculous.

You are in the wild, you look up into a beautiful, endless sky... and it's filled with frigging players flying back and forth!!! F* that!

Maybe, but Elder Scrolls never placed any real limitations on portal magic (lore-wise) outside of it traditionally being Mark and Recall. Which bring up my own concern with the prophets portals, if he can teleport us anywhere, why do I have to walk at all? Why does his portal land us a mile outside of our objective, if that's simply an accuracy issue, I'd hate to think about all the poor saps who had to calibrate.

I was just saying it since it is everywhere in the game, heck why not have it as well, but not in a serious tone of course. Just poiting it out and see what other players think about it. :p

No, levitation is not flying. And maybe as a passive skill ,who knows, and it can only be usable while wasting magicka.

I mean, come on, you know that Alik'r Desert was rough...going through it levitating would have been easier for the boots and feet.

High-end Mage Guild skill that lets open a portal to an "Attuned" mage guild location. The portal can be used by any friendly player until the player that opened it uses the portal.

Costs 100% of your magicka, and requires you to be out-of-combat. Your magicka cannot regen while the portal is open. No one in combat can use the portal once opened. If the caster is put into combat before using the portal, it will close automatically.

    Takes 4s to cast.

I wonder if it should be two-way portal. Like, the high-ranked Mage Guild player could keep the portal open while their group goes back to town, and then they can return via the same portal. Would create a means of sending players back to town for any variety of reasons and giving them a quick way to return to the same place with the group. Greatly reducing down-time, but due to the combat restrictions it would be risky to use in a PvP area.

However, you can only see the portal if you used it from the place it was created (provided two-directional option was available).

Mark and Recall could have potential...

If this was introduced, they would have to have a % chance that you didn't end up quite where you had in mind...(the occasional accidental blip into a Daedra's Lair during happy hour, anyone?)

Personally, I like the sorcerers screaming for help near the mini-gates as Daedra come out...("Dude, just walk the other way...")
Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

Levitation was in Morrowind, but it was not in Oblivion or Skyrim.

I think the main reason they left it out of Oblivion was purely mechanical – the cities all loaded separate zones and the versions of them you saw from outside the walls were fakish. So if you could levitate over the walls into the cities it would have messed things up.

Even in a single player game it can be a super-OP ability. You can just levitate over mobs, traps, etc. Think about all the Ayleid ruins in Oblivion where you could just levitate up to the platform by the entrance that led to the end of the dungeon…
Life of a Nightblade (Screenshot Tumblr)

Attention Zenimax: Stamina builds don't hold up to magicka builds, and this is causing most of your class imbalance. It makes melee weapons and bows weaker than staves and class abilities. It makes medium and heavy armor less desirable than light armor. Fix this imbalance, and you'll address most of your balance issues.

Yes I agree. But that is why I think it should be a Mages Guild or World passive, I dunno, make so that NOT anyone can easily have it. Also, not flying like the one in CoH/CoV which you just sort of glided but could do so and reach the top of a large building, no. I mean like the mages IN the game do or like I said on another comment here, like Flyff's Psykeeper class.

You don't have to pay ever... teleport to a guildie, then use that wayshrine to go where you want, if they weren't close.

i like the idea of levitation and portals. Very within the lore of the game. I dont care if I can bypass stuff i dont want to bother with, never could stand how mmos always think they have to populate every square inch with something to kill. They dont do that to much in this game so the idea of bypassing stuff really is not a big deal. Just because you can levitate and port doesnt mean you can do it over stuff they dont want you too. The same lore allows for tons of counter magic so I think it would be cool to add it in
