The trick is it is a pain in the rear.

The trick for me was to move on. That is to say don't get stuck one tumbler. If you don't get it move on to the next. I know this seems silly since obviously to open them you have to get them all, but it seemed most chest have 1 or 2 tumblers that are harder then the rest. And it was making me very irritated hitting a brick wall like that. So now of i don't get it i go on to the next. If you pop a couple of simple ones it always seem like the others aren't so bad anymore.

As for actually process on how to do it, click and hold it down. Let the puck go down until right when the tumbler starts to wiggle, then release.

Skipping the stiff tumblers and moving on to the easy ones is a good way to get the feel for what you need to do even if you don't get it opened.

Like vyndral said, don't get stuck on one tumbler. Move on to the next one. Other than that, it's just releasing right as the thing starts clicking and moving. Just takes practice.

    At least lockpicks are plentiful.

Practice makes perfect. :) Once you get the hang of it, you'll be opening Master locks with a few seconds left, don't worry.

... Or you'll have to find a sticky-fingered Khajiit friend to open them all. ;)

Compared to betas, lockpicking now is a joke :D I'm opening master chests on first try without breaking a pick, whereas in betas even the average difficulty was really hard.

The only advice here is to train yourself at it. It gets really banally easy once you open a few locks.

Someone had to tell me too,
    1. The trick is push down with the lockpick until it begins to tremble.
    2. Quickly ease off.
    3. Press down again until you reach just before the point where it trembles.
    4. Click the mouse button.
    5. Move onto the next tumbler.

Field of battle? Who said anything about battle! I thought we were talking lock picking! Violence never solved anything! Level through lock picking! 4,343,216 locks picked and I'm level 4 and at least 1/16th of the way to level 5!

Ok i totally made that last bit up. But violence is bad! Hug it out.

The tumbler makes a little dip to one side or the other just before it does the trembling thing. If you release it right there you often can get it. Also if you miss a tumbler just press it down again to just where the trembling started and release.

I very rarely fail in my attempts to open chests. All I do is position the pick above the tumbler and left click. When the tumbler starts to tremble I right click to set it. I don't even release the left click until I am ready to move on to the next tumbler. It's so much simpler. Give it a shot and once you get the hang of it the only chests you won't open will be "impossible" instead of "master," "hard," "advanced," or "simple."

Move the lock down, see the tumbler wiggle, release - repeat. The wiggle point will be at one of 4 places about 1/4 the tumbler length from the next notch - so 1 will be the top, 3/4 will be the first notch down (highest point a set tumbler can be), 1/2 the mid point, 1/4 the next point, and 0 for the point level with the bottom of the lock. You just need to note the wiggle point (if it doesn't set) and get the tumbler there the next go.

Just remember wiggle, release, next tumbler.

If releasing the lockpick at the right time is tricky (I have slight arthritis in my fingers) just press the right mouse button when the tumbler starts shaking instead.

Before starting this procedure, you must scream
    "LETS GET READY TO RUUUUMBLEEEEEEE!!!!"

1: left click mouse til its rumble tumble time
2: let go of mouse fast
3: if it missed or lockpick breaks, move back to 1.
4: If succesfull move on to the next tumbler
    5: see 1.
6: Repeat til chest is open.
7: Loot the content of the chest and do a little jig !
    8: Send me the loot !! :p

    OR

Poke me ingame so i can come open it and ninja the phat loots and then sell them to you !!! >:)

This is much easier in my opinion, I have done it enough now that it really makes no difference, but when you are trying to get the hang of it, this method is easier.

Click left mouse button, as soon as it jiggles, click the right mouse button to lock it in. Rinse and repeat.

There are several, I presume you must need a special item, maybe a key.

My husband and I found a chest the other day that was "Impossible" for him and "master" for me. My thinking is that it all depends on how much experience you have opening locks when you come across a chest.

The difficulty of the chests depends on the level of the player trying to open it. Roughly, an impossible chest for a level 10 character is an easy chest for a level 15 character.
