Refining

Does the material level affect the likelihood of netting a green, blue, purple, or yellow? Or is it completely based off of crafting skill level?

I do believe crafting level and the perks for extracting help, maybe? But it's largely RNG.

There is a passive skill in each of the crafts like Wood, Cloth and Black the increases the chance of receiving material when refining.
This does work, especially in increasing to odds of receiving Purple but Yellow is still hard to get with refining.

I have received most of my Yellow from Hirelings.

As for the level of item you are refining, in my opinion / experience it does not seem to matter.
It may be a case that some items have a higher chance but that would be hard to determine because of the chance of getting something in the first places is so random.

get a yellow ? u must be kidding, I haven't gotten a yellow since the hireling fix. I have 2 hirelings on my crafter, so I would say I didn't abuse the hirelings. I would luv to get at least 1 yellow after refining 200-500 harvested items.

From what I've noticed, higher tier ores have better chance to produce purple/gold upgrade items. Although as I moved up to better ores my level and passives also increased, so it's most likely a combination of things.

Going solely on the documentation within the game, the results of refining are the same regardless of crafting level and tier of material, the only modifier is the perk that increases the efficiency of refining materials.

I cannot recall the last time, or any time, that I have received a gold upgrade from refining (though at 50 in wood, metal and cloth I am sure I have) the vast majority of my gold improvements were from hirelings.

I'm the opposite. Though my crafts are only in the 30s and I only have 1 point in the smithing, wood, cloth hirelings, I've received a handful of legendary upgrade mats for each craft by refining and only 1 via hireling.

200-500 is nothing, i refined 1500 iron hide scraps and got 2 yellow.. with skill that increase chances to get some....
Anyway one yellow every 200 will be WAY too much...

Did you have all 3 points in that skill?

Yellow should be rare. And material level should have a effect, but I do not think anyone know at the moment.

The 3/3 in the extraction crafting skills is definitely the main factor in refining and getting improvements. At 1/3 clothing extraction (whatever it's called), I never got any yellows or purples. After I realized that you need 3/3 to maximize the chances of getting rare improvements, I stopped refining and stockpiled all my raw cloth. Then, finally at 3/3, I refined everything from hundreds of raw jute up to hundreds of raw kresh (sp?). While I did get some purples and even 1 yellow from the jute, I saw that I got purples and yellows more consistently at the higher tier raw clothes.

Some people say it is irrelevant what tier of raw material you are refining and only the 3/3 in the respective extraction skill matters for refining but my own experience doesn't agree with that.
