A server returns to the kitchen with a plate of fish & chips.
"The customer says the fish smells...fishy?"
The cook narrows his eyes & says flatly
"It's fish..."
The server replies "Well, they don't like it, should we clear the check?"
*Manager steps in* "That fish is fine, get that table cleared & re-seated."
one of the sous chesf steps forward, holding the bowl of fillets they are pulling from; he holds it up to the manager.
"Someone didn't do their job, there's old fish in with the fresh;& it's turning the lot of it fairly quickly, THAT is why it smells like ammonia, some people are more sensitive than others sir.."
*manager glares at the sous chef as if he is looking through him cutting him off*
"We have served seven pieces of fish tonight with one complaint."
"...but..sir that doesn't alter the fact that.."
Another server walks up to the kitchen window with a customer this time, a salad in her hand. "The vinaigrette is super oily, can she get another salad with a different dressing please?" *The manager & several chefs glare at the customer in frustration*
Customer chimes up "Oh but the mini-tomatoes are spectacular! lovely in fact, I DO like them!"
*manager looks down his nose at the plate*
"So..you liked the tomatoes, but don't like the dressing, & you want another salad...that's fine, we're charging you for this one though.."
*customer...blank faced & speechless returns to her table while the server slides the remainder of the salad into the bin, meanwhile, the manager is in a heated argument with another server about another plate of returned fish*
"If they don't like it, tell them to EAT something else from the menu!" *second chef chuckles & whispers under his breath* "just take the fish off for the night."
The executive chef hears it & glares at him from the pantry area, sliding up to quickly whisper
"If you don't like your job, there's a long line."
..sous chef laughs it off, & goes back to work, but knows to keep his head down for the rest of the day.
Two hours later, eleven plates of fish returned among other unintended mishaps, ..a few vocal, angry customers, (some being told that it's "Their problem" not the restaurants' at issue here are leaving & giving bad word of mouth by the handfuls. As people are more wont to relay a bad experience than a good one)
End of the night, manager is telling everyone what a good job they did.
No-one has fessed up to putting the old fish in with the fresh; the vinaigrette is still too oily, customers are still unhappy,
...but the majority of them paid their bill & went about their business.
The manager consoles himself with the dwindling register take, saying "You can't please everyone, those people came out tonight wanting to complain. & most people left here loving my restaurant.."
He calls the owner to say he's locking up for the night, says the tomatoes he fielded from local growers got raves, congratulates him on the idea.
Doesn't mention the fish...or the fact that the same fish will be on the menu for tomorrow.
..Long, I know....but ZoE...
