Magicka Recovery Question

Hey all.

I'm playing a Nord dragonknight and I'm currently at VR1. My magicka recovery every 2 seconds is 65, I've got a toggled ability, Flames of Oblivion, that costs 28 magicka a second.

My magicka drains so quickly when using this ability and yet the math says I should be able to keep it on indefinitely so long as I don't use other magicka draining abilities, yet this isn't the case, does anyone know why?

Have you checked to see if turning it on changes your magicka regen? press c while it's up.

Alright, after checking the character page when actually in combat, the magicka regen drops to 0. I'm not sure why it does that, since the tooltip over the value states "When in combat, you regenerate 65 magicka every 2 seconds."

Because when you toggle on an ability that constantly drains magicka, it stops regeneration until it's deactivated. Did you really think you were supposed to get an infinite ability for combat?

If that's the case, it's a pointless ability, you can't keep it on, the damage is minimal, and you won't be able to use any of your other abilities with this on. That's just bad game design.

Nowhere on any of the tooltips does it say it'll shut down in combat regeneration if you've toggled abilities on.

I think they assume that you know you're not supposed to be granted an infinite supply of AoE fire damage plus crit rating. Which, by the way, is pretty damn good, even with the drain. The point of that ability (and this is coming from someone who doesn't even play a DK) is clearly to let you unleash AoE hell with your melee weapon abilities.

I seem to recall similar abilities that other classes have include a note about regen not working while the ability is active. The Templar's shield ability in the Aedric Spear tree for example.

Sounds like you found a tooltip error and should submit a bug report.

How does it seem like a bug?

The tooltip states it costs [x] magicka per second. If all that meant was that it reduced your magicka regeneration by [x] per second, then it would be an ability one could use infinitely. Which is clearly not intended.

Any ability that drains magicka-per-second is clearly designed to stop magicka regeneration while it is activated. This is not the same as the missing information from the Templar skill, which simply didn't note that magicka regeneration was stopped while that skill was active.

To be fair, who is only going to use 1 ability for a whole fight? Especially mobs grouped in 4 or 5, and bosses? Some more skilled people might get away with it, but for us normal people, we're not going to turn on 1 toggle ability and spend the rest of the time doing regular mouse click attacks.

It's sad that I'm not a DK and can still figure out how this ability would absolutely kill in any AoE-heavy fight.

With this ability on my bar (and a stamina-regen bonus or two), I can toggle it on, wade into the middle of a crowd and start spamming AoE weapon abilities at will. This ability only drains magicka. So if I'm thinking strategically, I know that when I have it on, I'll be focusing on my stamina-using abilities. If the fight doesn't involve that, then yes, I'll probably switch out for something else. Then again, I can think of plenty of boss fights where I would toggle this on to quickly churn out some critical weapon-ability hits then toggle it off while my stamina regenerated.
