Farming Profession (future content idea - supports ESO economy)

The developers should consider adding Farming as a future profession for ESO. Farming is a big part of the cultures and economy throughout Tamriel; having places where players can farm outside major cities and towns would be a welcome addition (farmlands would be marked with a crop symbol on the map). This profession would allow players to plant various seeds and harvest the crops with a scythe. This profession would also allow players to cultivate livestock for the purpose of harvesting meat, milk, eggs, fur, leather, etc as well as providing ingredients to make armor dyeing and poisons. Depending upon the type of animal, there are several options in the Barn, such as Feeding, Milking, Skinning, Butchering, and Breeding animals has a very long cool-down, which may result in a sick or dead offspring.

Farmlands have the following buildings...

Barn - This building is instanced to the player and is where your livestock resides
Mill - This building is where the player processes the crops harvested

Farming supports the ESO economy as follows...

Agriculture ---> Provisioning & Clothing
Dye Extraction ---> Alchemy
Poison Extraction ---> Alchemy
Skinning ---> Clothing
Butchering ---> Provisioning
Pet Domestication ---> Vanity Pets

Farming Skill Line looks something like this...

Agriculture (Rank I): Players can plant Wheat Seeds
Agriculture (Rank II): Players can plant Apple Seeds
Agriculture (Rank III): Players can plant Corn Seeds
Agriculture (Rank IV): Players can plant Barley Seeds
Agriculture (Rank V): Players can plant Carrot Seeds
Agriculture (Rank VI): Players can plant Banana Seeds
Agriculture (Rank VII): Players can plant Cotton Seeds
Agriculture (Rank VIII): Players can plant Oat Seeds
Agriculture (Rank IX): Players can plant Tomato Seeds

Dye Extraction (Rank I): Slight chance to extract dye from plants
Dye Extraction (Rank II): Significant chance to extract dye from plants

Poison Extraction (Rank I): Slight chance to extract poison from plants
Poison Extraction (Rank II): Significant chance to extract poison from plants

Animal Husbandry (Rank I): Cultivation of lesser livestock (e.g. chickens, turkeys)
Animal Husbandry (Rank II): Cultivation of greater livestock (e.g. pigs, cows, sheep)

Breeding (Rank I): Allows lesser livestock to breed with each other
Breeding (Rank II): Allows greater livestock to breed with each other

Skinning (Rank I): Chance to gain slightly more fur or leather when animal is killed
Skinning (Rank II): Chance to gain significantly more fur or leather when animal is killed

Butchering (Rank I): Chance to gain slightly more meat when animal is killed
Butchering (Rank II): Chance to gain significantly more meat when animal is killed

Pet Domestication (Rank I): Players can create monkey vanity pets
Pet Domestication (Rank II): Players can create dog vanity pets
Pet Domestication (Rank III): Players can create cat vanity pets

    Does anyone think farming would be a good profession for the game?

    Not really, there are farming sims out there already, and to be done proper you couldn't leave your crops/animals, which would prevent you questing.

    You did put a lot of thought into though, and it wasn't bad, just not suited to this game (in my opinion), the pet Domestication bit was especially good.

    I would love the ability to make vanity pets!

    It is actualy good idea. I did like farming mechanics in bounty bay online. You planted seeds and in some ti it grew up and was ready for harvest. But I am not sure if it would work here. Whole design would need to be adjusted.

    It would be hard to implement in my opinion.

    But I like the idea

    Why??

    This is a game about hardy fighting across an area, not some Pokemon adventure..

    I too like hardy fighting, but sometimes you want to just relax and enjoy some time wasters. People should be able to play like they want... why cant I farm?

    Because to do it properly you need an area of land..And you would need it to take a lot longer than making a shield. Corn doesn't grow in a few seconds.

    The developers could add farmland by major cities where players can use to plant their seeds. To make it semi-realistic, the corn would need roughly 1 minute to grow. I think this profession would work out well for ESO.

    I like the idea in principle. MMOs used to be much more open in their features and the idea that the world is a sandbox environment with a lot of different things to do in it. Not sure how well it would work in this game or if I would want them dedicating time to this over raiding content etc though.

    I understand your concerns. Hopefully, they can add much more content down the road, including additional professions.

    I like that idea, you put a lot of thought into it. I would really like to see "cultivating" put into this game, just as Warhammer online had it, it would benefit alchemy so much. Maybe make the seeds hard to get from going out harvesting the flower nodes, then you're able to plant them just like Warhammer online did, you had a seperate window pop up, then the seeds could crit and you could get a higher level of that specific seed or they could fail and you would lose the seed.

    It's a great idea. Use Lord of the Rings Online as a base example of how to implement farming.

    Some commenters have said you need time for farming to be realistic. Why? None of the crafting in the game is realistic or takes time.

    Why are we not backing this?? :worried:

    It would be a blast if we can raise plant farmations for alchemy reagents in our houses.

    Farming as a profession sounds like a lot of fun, @Roneth! We love how well thought out your idea is and really appreciate you taking the time to share it. That being said we, unfortunately, can't guarantee this idea will be used, but please don't let that discourage you from sharing any other feedback or suggestions you may in the future.

    Roneth is probably shocked that a ZOS staffer is tagging him in a post that is 4 years old. Guess they really do like necromancy!

    not to compare us to other big name mmos out there but look how popular the whole pet thing is in wow. and they have both the ability to obtain them ingame as well as purchase them. Just shows more ZOS moneyhunger.

    *ps I heard that alot about houseing and stuff and honestly that is a huge amazing feature alot of players love.

    not everyone plays the game as fight fight kill kill all the time. Ive completed some of the hardest vet content. Destroyed players on the battlefield. Have some of the most amazing houses. and some days ill spend it dressed as a priest in Vulkhel guard and /rake emote and garden all day. So i would love the ability to farm.

    Pls.
    I'm the necromancer here. However i did not surprised by the fact that ZOS responded this thread right after the necro is successfully done because his ideas are just too damn good to miss. I am amazed how community and ZOS missed this thread in 2014. I hope one day they will make it real! It fits the ESO concept perfectly.

    Now can I have a necromancer title? @ZOS_Holden :D

    I would love for farming to be introduced into the game. It could definitely be a skill that incorporates all other crafting skill lines as well.

    From a materials point of view it's kind of pointless since it's a lot more work than just a couple points in Provisioning Hirelings. We already get a stupid amount of mats (except Perfect Roe).

    But from an immersion point of view it could be the next big time sink.
    Definitely pair it up properly with Furnishings and Housing.
