Once players purchase the game, they will have unlimited access for the first 30 days and can continue beyond that with a subscription of $14.99/30 days (€12.99 / £8.99)

Depends of course your currency and what kind of bills and coins you have. In here it would require 12 x 1 eur coins, 1x 50 cent, 2 x 20 cent, 1 x 5 cent, 4 x 1 cent that would add up to 20 many money.

On serious side you will need to have on your bank or credit card the amount of money that is required to pay your selected subscription 1,3 or 6 months in your currency.

Meaningless quote considering they put a hold on your card for the subscription amount. Perhaps you were confused.

You need the month's subscription cost on your card to activate your game. I'm not aware of any other mmo to ever do this.

You probably misunderstand me. I will choose another words. I tried to subscribe already, but on the card was only one mounth's cost. They held it emptying my card. And now, after ending of first "free" month they tryed to take a real payment, but failed.

If your game time lapses when your payment charge date comes up, and you do not have $14.99 (€12.99 / £8.99 ?) on your card, then the game will not let you log in until a new payment charge clears. Also note, that if that happens, your payment date will change and you won't be billed that day of the month that you started playing/activated your account any longer.

(I, myself, had to learn that one out the hard way a couple days ago when they gave us an extra 5 days of free game time, everybody I know in-game said their charge date also got moved forward 5 days.)

    What are you using?

Do you use a credit card or a gametime card? A gametime card only works once, you enter the key and get game time added to your account.

A credit card works as long you have money on your bank account (unless its a pre paid credit card), which you need to charge manually in advance.

If they took money from you during the free 30 days, then you need to contact the billing support and explain your situation there. There were a few people affected of this.

In general you need to keep in mind what others and I said earlier in regards of the money needed.
    $14.99 (€12.99 / £8.99

This is the amount of money you must have before they charge your card. If you don't, they cant take the money and you cant play.

If you are not that experienced with credit cards, I would recommend a game time card. They are easy to use.

I bought the digital download Imperial Edition using a pre-paid VISA. There was then enough left on the card to cover a month's subscription ($14.99). They did their charge/hold/reimburse thing weeks ago. The money went back in, fine. Now, it is 05/09/2014 and they charge $14.99 to the card. Great. I should be good to go for another 30 days, after which I plan to use the game time cards(It has, as I anticipated, taken stores in my area a while to start carrying them. This is why I put enough on the pre-paid VISA card to cover an extra month.). Nope. I get an email stating the payment failed and my ESO account is now expired. I have checked and verified that they charged the $14.99 to my card and that it was paid to them. I have now paid for the next 30 days of game time, and have nothing to show for it.

I wonder have others had issues with billing and their account as I have?

I've sent them an email. I hope that I am able to progress toward a resolution past the point of just another auto-reply roleplay email.

I am sure you will get help, they charged several people wrongfully after Early Access - it should be a known issue and I am sure they are aware of it.

Maybe @ZOS_JessicaFolsom or @ZOS_KaiSchober can take a look at it so you can get help quickly.

I'm still don't understand. My subscription is not active now, because my charged time is up and payment for next month failed. I must re-enter card number again and I fear another "hold".

    Don't try and resub.

If I understand you correctly, your 'holding payment' remained as a debit instead of eventually going away and now your card is trying to take the subscription fee (again!) and the credit isn't there to cover it?

If I were you I would contact my card issuer and see what they have to say. It can't hurt to email Zen's account support too, but I believe it is your card company who have the real power to make this issue go away.

I used a Visa $25 gift card. I will not use my cc nor any with information associated with myself.

Thanks TD bank for screwing up so royally with my accounts that I no longer feel safe doing online purchasing or online personal accounting. /rabble

Let me just make a clear how this works:

When you purchase the game, you pay the amount for the product as well as reserving payment for the subscription. So on basic what you need of minimum on the card is the game's cost and 1 month subscription.

This doesn't mean that you are paying for that 1 month subscription, they are holding it in reserve as a guarantee that they get their payment. If you decide after the 30 days that you won't subscribe, you cancel your subscription plan, and that reserve will be transferred back to you. Depending on your bank and your standing, this should take 3-5 work days (Saturday and Sunday not included).

So just to prove this with numbers, say the game costs 100 and the subscription is at 100, you pay with a creditcard. On your invoice it would stand 200, but only 100 of that is actual payment, while the other 100 is the reserve. If you decide you don't want to subscribe, you get that back.

Hotels have this kind of system as well, so it works the same way, though, some hotels also have a 10-15% deposit on top of it all. Be sure to read your provider's terms of use :)

FYI: That's not how credit cards work, credit cards work based on lines of CREDIT (which are based on your credit worthiness) they don't rely on you actually having cash in your bank account at the time of a given transaction.
