    The problem being?

If you're in the market for something non-trivial then it's up to you to research the market and determine what you want to spend.

As a seller I have a price in mind but if you're prepared to pay me more than that be my guest .. but if you want what I'm selling you need to open the negotiation.

I don't however actually trade at all in this game, but if I did that would be my approach, since if you're not interested in playing it my way there'll be someone else who will: it's a seller's market for non-mass-farmed items. it why the price-gougers are so vocal in their attempts to ensure ZOS don't realise the guild-based economy is a total fail and implement what the majority of non-TES fans want.

Sometimes when somebody wants to buy something of mine, I ask for an offer because even if I know the items value, its more valuable to me than market value. So I won't sell it if they are not paying higher than my price.

That is because most people do not like a true auction. Just check out eBay. Most listings have buy it now pricing anymore. People quickly get used too and expect price certainty and have dislike for the haggle/auction model.

  • thezeroroomub17_ESO
Auctions are fine. Blind auctions where the market for the item is varies wildly and unpredictably are not fun. You can't determine the market for an item. You can't do any "research". Bids and final pricings are unknown, conducted in whispers, so no - it's not fun or interesting at all. This is not a standard auction situation, so let's throw that argument out right now.

Most of the people I have encountered in this game who respond with "offer" don't understand the concept of haggle either. I'm all for haggling, but this has been my experience about 75% of the time. I will of course lowball them, who in their right mind would not, and they just say "no thanks" instead of countering. These people think I am trying to set a price in stone and are ready to move on without even countering my offer at all. You advertise you want to sell, I am obviously interested, so let's negotiate since you are unwilling to provide a starting off point yourselves.

I'm fine with the haggling reality here, but if sellers don't understand the concept at all then perhaps the game needs an AH. One ding *** asked me what I meant when, out of frustration over dealing with this nonsense over and over, I responded to their "no thanks" with "You don't have a counter offer?" They didn't even know what I meant by that! It's ludicrous.

We all want a reasonable deal - both the seller AND the buyer. It's not like it's a mystery why people say "offer" instead of perhaps highballing the situation to begin with, but come on man! I shouldn't have to explain how to haggle with someone who is offering, of their own accord, something to sell!

The correct answer to "Offer?" is always "10 worms+5 guts". Do not encourage this kind of stupid crap. In the end you do not really need to buy anything from these guys.

There is a reason we do not use that type of *** in real life.
    Hey I want a burger.
    Offer?
    Stabs face with hammer.

Haggling is Ok but it always starts with an asking price. No seller in game will actually haggle though. Auctions are rarely this blind in the real world so I do not see that as some valid justification.

When someone says "Offer" I say ok 1 gold. If they say no then 2 gold. Just keep going by the time you hit 10 gold they will either tell you the price or ignore you heh.

Chances are that they as little about the price as you do, personally I hate this as well though. If I ask for price and they say offer I tell them that I am not interested anymore. It is like asking someone if they would like an apple and them turning around asking if you would like an orange.... It baffles my why they cannot answer the question and expect you to answer them but I digress, you should find the price from other players by watching the market and give a guess.

When ever I get asked to 'offer' I offer 1 gold so they come back with the REAL price they were looking for but hoping I was going to 'offer' a stupidly large price.

Eg, they want to sell it for 1k, but hoping my offer would be 2k so they would then take that. But by offering 1 gold, they then tell me their 'real' price of 1k

As for haggling, I do that sometimes but it depends on the item. Some items its a 'sellers' market, (more demand then supply) and its not worth haggling as you will get a sale for the price you wait if you want a little bit.

If you want to'buy' sometime, then its ok for the 'seller' to ask what your offering for the item.
If you want to 'sell' you need to have a starting point and allow the buyer to haggle, unless you know it will move for that price and you can just tell them no.

It seems to me that most people think that WTS = willing to sell, in that if you offer them enough money they will be willing to sell the item to you. In my opinion, if you want to sell an item you will list the amount of gold you want in exchange for the item.

Isn't everyone really willing to sell every item they have for the right price? So should we all just start randomly linking items into /zone chat telling people to make an offer?

I don't think so, and that's why I don't participate in willing to sell item listings. If you don't list a price I ignore your listing, if you keep listing it over and over without a price I ignore you.

If you are the one that comes up with the idea to make a trade, then you should be able to come up with a price for that trade. The same holds true if you are looking for a certain item, WTB Primal Motif. If you really want to buy one you'll list a price. Everybody is willing to buy something for the right price, but if you really want to buy something you will list your price.

    In my opinion.

    So much agree.

Can you imagine going to the grocery store and all the price listings said "Offer?" LOL It's stupid, inefficient, and in the long run it's anti-consumer. You're not going to get some benevolent deal; you're going to get scammed because you haven't taken your time to "research the market".

Screw the market. Name your price and I'll take it or leave it. If they want to play the "Offer" game then set up an Auction House. Someone in this thread earlier said "It's like people don't know how a real Auction works." No. A real auction starts with a base price and goes from there. They don't just put a car up on display and say, "Offer? lol"

    LOL

I see that all the time. To me that translates to "I want to see if I can rip you off". I don't even respond at that point. I just move on.

Serious sellers will include a price up front. Haggling is a waste of my time.

Oh, I disagree. I think after enough people laugh at them, they'll stop doing it. Eventually it will sink in and they will cut it out.

If you are worried about the "real" value of what you are selling, maybe you should put off selling it till you find out what it's value is. Just sayin.

I do this all the time haha, I have a price in mind. But there has been so many times where someone has offered me more then I would have taken. So I'm guilty but I also won't stop unfortunately. At least until they put in a feasible auction house where I can just dump all of my stuff, as opposed to the limited guild stores that only hold 30.

    PlayerA: offer...
    PlayerB: 1k or Hunted
    PlayerA: ok 1k

yup its all about scamming people that dont know an item's worth.

    i whisper a guy selling a recipe:

me: how much you want for it?
    him: offer?
me: idk how much you want for it?
    him: offer?

i didnt bother responding back, he kept spamming chat, and 5 minutes later i get a whisper back from him saying "ill sell it for 500g" and i say "not interested anymore"

he lost his only customer and kept spamming chat for another hour trying to sell it.

Offer 5k. Then when they respond say never mind, got one for 1 gold just now.

This is really only a problem if you actually WANT the item so badly that you are willing to deal with it.

I ignore such attempts to sell something.
Sure some people like to trade and discuss the price, I am not one of those. If I sell, I tell directly how much I want and if it is considered well below the market value - it is not my problem. If I buy, I want to know the price from the seller. Because... I saw way too often a situation with me telling my offer and the current owner of the item changes his message to: "WTS [item], current offer is...". I just want to pay a fixed value and move on, I don't want to guess the optimal price or compete with other anonymous (and maybe non-existing) customers.

Independent auction house where no conversation between players exists would be a different matter.
