Why no spears / halberds / pole-arms? Addition of dwarves later?

yeah, they would fall under 2 handers, but they are different and could have new skill lines.

thoughts?

also what are the odds that Dwarves make it in the game as a race at some point in the distant future as part of an expansion?

I would seriously doubt we'd see Dwemer in game as a playable race. Ever. Lore being what it is. They're more dead than the Ayleids. Who are, themselves, very dead.

This. The Dwemer are gone, and based on the OP's use of "Dwarves," I'm betting that he thinks they're like Tokien's dwarves. Lore isn't going to be compromised so radically as to bring back an entire extinct race.

Also, in before the spears/polearms debate starts for the 100th time since Oblivion was released...

Yeah Dwemer probably were as tall as Dunmer or more. And are also either extinct like a dodo or lost in another dimension

Most RPGs shy away from spears because they require an extra set of animations. If you look at ESO there is almost no damn difference between the animations for daggers/swords/axes/maces and swinging spears is just as stupid a concept as it sounds. The games that do include them also rarely get spears right, The only games that I can think with nicely done spears and pole arms are Mount and Blade and sometimes in Dark Souls 1/2.
There is also the problem that spears are not that great of a weapon for 1v1 combat if you try to make combat even sightly realistic.

Dwemer "Dwarves". Vanished about what, 2000yrs ago I think. Since you may be new to whole lore of TESO.

These are how the races break down.

Humans: Redguard, Nord, Imperials, & Breton(half bloods though), Akavir(Believed extinct), Atmorans(Fathers of Nords, believed extinct),

Beast Races: Khajiit , Argonians, Tsaesci(Vampire Serpent Men, mostly bred out of history with Imperials), Lilmothiit(Fox-like race, believed extinct)

Mer(Elves): Dwemer(Dwarves, Missing/Extinct), Dunmer(Dark Elves), Bosmer(Wood Elves), Altmer(High Elves), Orsimers(Orcs), Aldmer(Extinct Elven Race, Fathers of Mer), Chimer(Elves that became Dunmer), Falmer(Corrupted Snow Elves), Snow Elves(Mostly Extinct/changed), Ayleid(Wild Elves, mostly extinct), Maormer(Sea Elves), Cantemiric Velothi(Swamp Elves, believed to be extinct)

    There you go.

The Dwemer are an EXTINCT race of elves with a fundamental understanding of advanced mechanics and science who built underground cities. The term "dwarf" was a translation error by of one of the early archeologists who studied the Dwemer, and the term Dwarf became popular long before it was discovered to be an error. There never has been, nor ever will be a "traditional" fantasy dwarf race in the Elder Scrolls series.

For more info on the Dwemer, see the following: Elder Scrolls Lore Chronicles

can't we find some kind of mosquito enshrined in amber that might have sucked on a dwemer at some point in the past?

    worked in jurassic park.

    that sucks.

Part of me was hoping that as the game grew they'd introduce new races & starting areas and that dwarves would've been one of them...I know a guy who will ONLY play an RPG so long as dwarves are a part of it..or it being star wars.

how did they go extinct? one thing i read said they had an elder scroll and might have went forward / backward in time...that being the case, who's to say they couldn't come back?

whatever...if not dwarves, then i hope they do expand beyond what is already there.

    "is that a hobbit?"

    "no, it's a hobo and a rabbit; but they're making a hobbit."

Play Morrowind if you'd like to learn more about exactly how the Dwemer disappeared. Suffice it to say, they may come back in a future Elder Scrolls game, but ESO takes place before any of the single-player games. It ain't happening.

And they've had a very well-established lore about which races make up this world. The only potential addition I see in the future would be the Akaviri. But they've done just fine for a couple of decades with the races we have now. I don't see a reason to change that.

Dungeon Lords had a sweet spear animation, heavy on aoe combos. Even pointed this out in beta feedback.
If they can snatch the sound of ghosts dieing from that game, they can snatch the spear attack animation as well :expressionless:

Well its not entirely true, Dungeon Lords ghost sound they took for their dieing ghosts is the one where they cast their pesky cold breath.
But its still the same sound, just used differently.

Actually Dwemer are not quite extinct... just extremely endangered. In both TES: Morrowind and Skyrim, there is living Dwemer. Not sure about Oblivion.

In Marrowind, Sheogorath was able to summon a couple Dwemer on the quest Mouth of Madness.

Can't remember the details about the one in Skyrim.

    http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Yagrum_Bagarn

Also noted... that Dwemer have possible existence on Akavir. Little is known about it and may still reside on that continent.

Now, as a playable race or large amounts of them will pretty much never happen. But it's possible they could introduce some, due to the fact that ESO takes place prior to the other TES games.

Thre is one Dwemer left, he makes an appearance in Morrowind and would exist in ESO's timeframe as well. His name is Yagrum Bagarn and would be great for a character in an expansion, perhaps centered on him.

There is hope oblivion ( the realm) has a different time stream, I'm sure if u found a pice of oblivion that was still connected too the time of the alyaids and dwemer you could incorporate them into this game! Just saying :)

If you want to know what happened to the Dwemer without playing through Morrowind, you can watch the three part series on the Dunmer Tribunal which were pretty much the cause of the Dwemer vanishing. Interestingly enough this story also tells how the ancient Chimer became the modern Dunmer (Dark Elves).

Obvious spoilers for those who have not played Morrowind (Do I really need to post spoiler warnings about a 14 year old game?)

    Part 1
    Part 2
    Part 3

You also have to realize that this game is set in the middle of the Elder Scrolls timeline, with all of the single player games taking place far in the future, so there is no way that they will add anything new that did not exist in the single player games as this would break their own lore.

There are no dwarves as we think of token dwarves. I was wondering about this also and the lore i found stated that they were elves that lived underground and they think they were tagged with eh name dwarves because something about hill giants saying they were dwarfs compared to themselves.

So pretty much they think they were just elves that lived underground and that hill giants stated they were dwarves compared to themselves.

Id like to see more variety in the game as far as weapons go. But Dwarves? Sorry enough Lore has been tossed out for the sake of this games creation. Dwarves would be a serious break in Lore that could not be ignored. And shouldnt be forgiven if it was to happen.

False. Skyrims shows two of the last living Dwemer. One of which you have to kill because he has become a Vampire. Still, they are extinct/missing as of now and no one knows will we ever see their return. Some suggest they live in the moon now. Some say in another dimension or in the aether (?) a specific kind of afterlife.
