A very learning experince

So yesterday I decided to go to Cyrodiil and get some skyshards. My home campaign, Wabbajack, is as usual dominated by EP, which is the alliance I'm in, so it seemed to be a good idea to get as many shards as possible, while we still control most of it. For this particular task I decided to use Skyshards addon, which I normally consider unsporty, but taking into account the sheer size of Cyrodiil and my very limited free time, I just couldn't afford looking for shards based on journal description.

I started with EP shards and after collecting a few unguarded surface ones entered a first solo dungeon. In my normal relaxed solo-dungeons-are-too-easy style I approached a first group of three mobs and... got obused in the most inhumane fashion imaginable. That totally pissed me off, but I decided to leave it for now and go get a few more surface ones and maaan was I surprised that most of them are in fact protected... more RAEP followed. You can't imagine how pissed off I was - I've already spent an hour and a half and I just managed to get only three easiest shards in the entire area.

Finally I came to my senses and decided to do things differently. Obviously, my ways of normal campaign PvE are not working here, probably because even though I strive not to I'm constantly over-leveled.

I took it slow and careful and in the next 3 hours I think I've learned more about battle system in the game than all the other ~2 days and 20 hours have taught me - scouting the area, choosing a safe approach path, checking out patrol routes of mobs, not entering fights with more than 2 enemies at once, not daring to miss a block or an interrupt. All of it and all at once! Every time I entered a fight I had to have a clear plan in mind of how I'm going to do it, not just winging it. I always had to make decision whether I really need to fight this enemy or should I just sneak past. I had to fight every kind of enemy imaginable - bats, bandits, imperials, necromancers, vampires - you name it, it was there!

It was fantastic! Like Commandos meets Elder Scrolls (if you guys remember what Commandos was).

And the location was properly awesome! I've heard so many people say that Cyrodiil is empty and lacks any content apart from PvP. I really don't know what these people have been on, but it's indeed a strong stuff. For me Cyrodiil turned out to be so alike my old beloved Oblivion version of it with dozens of dungeons, tons of POIs and loads and loads of quests. I didn't take any because I couldn't afford to level (I'm already well above my quests) but there were so many of them. Every square meter (10.76 square feet for you yanks  ) was designed with love and passion and music was as usual amazing.

You may think that it was a very lonely experience and not the one really supposed to be in an MMO, but you're wrong. I met just enough other players not to be annoyed by them, I wandered on to other alliance's areas, killed and was killed a few times, I did (from sidelines) observe Aldmeri dominion trying to take back one of their outposts and helped kill the remains of their gang once the attack was repelled.

Last night I had the best MMO experience in my life. Cyrodiil has just a perfect mix of single player and MMO stuff. I've collected 25 shards and 21 more remaining so I'm very looking forward to finishing it off tonight. Many of the things I wrote about wouldn't apply to VRs but if you're not on the cap yet, may I suggest you take a stroll around beautiful Cyrodiil (preferably alone) and I promise you'll learn a lot, get plenty of skill points and most likely will enjoy it.

TL;dr - Go to Cyrodiil. Just do it.

I love traveling around there. Skyshard hunting alone proves a good challenge, especially the dungeons. Also hanging around in enemy territories and watching them go by without spotting you. The mere fact that I can be PKed if I'm not careful keeps me coming back.

Why not? I thought it would be the most boring thing I'd ever have to do in the game, but it turned out to be the most rewarding. The reason I said 'alone' is because:

    a) The content becomes so much easier in a group and you just don't get that learning curve that I was talking about. I mean, I'm a 2-h DK and I'm not used to sneaking and planning, just rushing in and bashing some heads with my huge sword

    b) When you're in the group you can't take things at your own pace, there's always peer pressure, even if it's not voiced. Of course, if you have a good buddy, who has a same play style as you do then by all means, but then again there is 'a)'.

I can relate a bit to the OP. I absolutely despise PvP in an MMO, pretty much I've been clouded by the horrendous system in WoW that they think is PvP but basically is a 2 button quick event at who can press 1 and 2 fastest - that is 1 cracker attack and 1 stun.

So my anticipation to do Cyrodill was about the same as having your soul sucked out and sent to Couldharbour; not something you'd do freely.

I did however manage to get pleasantly surprised by the experience. Right now it's a bit overwhelming with vampires in mind, but come next patch that will be properly balanced so I'm not too concerned about that. What surprised me the most is that I want to go back for second helpings, I want to hone my skills, test my wits and sharpen my game just to survive longer. It's the thrill of actually mastering your class and deal some hell before hell is brought to you.

So yeah, I can relate to the OP, Cyrodill is actually WPvP as WPvP should be. Engaging, promising, fun and at times, epic (it's impossible not to be in awe when your fortress is besieged or you are the besieging party). So take it from one who's been hating PvP due to WoW for many years (9 to be precise); at least try it :)

It's even more fun when you do that while your alliance in is getting your ass kicked. (EP in Auriel's)
Then even more fun when you do not let enemies get their shards and their quests done. >:)

Oddly it is perfectly safe if your in a campaign that your alliance dominates. I've had a blast exploring Cryodiil and only at one point did I encounter another player from a different faction. The fact that I was exploring their home territory tends to explain it. Frankly your missing out on some great PVE adventuring by avoiding Cryodiil.

I've met a few more, again when exploring their territory. In one particular dungeon I've met 3 players from Aldmeri dominion (they were all going separately). I killed two of them, which made me very proud and then, when I just killed the last mob standing between me and the shard and was OOM and almost OOS, this DK came out of hiding and nailed me to the floor. Seems like he was following me all the way, letting me do all the hard work  Probably he would've killed me even if I were at full health/mag/stam as his armor set looked very high-level. Still, it was so fun. I wasn't even pissed off when he killed me, in fact I had a laugh.

I'm on Auriel's Bow ... Daggerfall ... the chances of me Skyshard hunting alone are incredibly slim.

Although I do solo roam and pick off stragglers like those that are Skyshard hunting because i'm a bit of a mans dangly part.

I have done it from time to time .I am nowhere near getting them all though. Interestingly the AD are not very careful about guarding their boarders . Overconfidence I guess.

Slaughtering level <20 milk drinkers that come to quest and collect skyshards in territory rightfully belonging to the Pact, that is to say all of Cyrodil is a very enjoyable duty.
