Please Explain Exactly How the Soulburst Makes Sense

I thought that once the dragonfires were no longer lit, after a short time any daedric prince could open up stable links between Nirn and Oblivion and begin invading? According to ESO's story, however, despite the fires remaining dark for several years prior to the soulburst, Molag Bal could only invade when Varen attempted the ritual to make himself dragonborn and caused the soulburst. Why couldn't Molag Bal and the other princes simply invade without the soulburst occurring? According to the events of Oblivion, this whole idea of a "soulburst" appears to be lore-breaking.

There is no safty to be found in a sword. a sword brings death. it does not give life. it is a responsibility... a burden... this is no gift. it is a curse. i hope one day... you will forgive me.

I thought it took a soul gem or required you have a soul gem on you.

HEY! It's a soul and it's in MY possession. Just because I ripped it out of the chest of that Argonian revolutionary and crammed it in a purple gem doesn't mean it's not mine!

Sorry, all I could think about was the skill when you said that.

But on topic I will have to look into that, my memory of Oblivion is a bit lacking.

The difference could be Oblivion's story involved just an invasion, while ESO's involves a plane meld of Nirn and Coldharbour.

    WARN SPOILERS

If you pay attention to the story they actually explain it to you. Before the soul burst there was two things keeping Nirn safe the dragon fires and the Amulet of Kings. As long as the Amulet of Kings was in the possession of an heir of Alessia, Nirn was still safe. The Soul Burst broke that protection by breaking the pact between Alessia and the dragon god Akitosh. If you finish the story Merida explains that though you stopped the Plane Meld, other Daedric Princes may come a calling and that the Amulet of Kings as lost its power for at least a generation. So, in essence the Amulet of Kings may have become permantly useless and the dragon fires became the only way to protect Nirn. So, the soul burst is what caused the ability of Oblivion to invade when the dragon fires go out.

Ah, I see how that works.
