Spellcrafting

The developers stated that this is a coming feature. Does anybody know what spellcrafting is? Sounds like I will be able to create my own spells? I will then craft a long-range high damage area spell that stuns enemies and steal their health while at the same time cleanse all my conditions and grant me stealth among other things. LOL.

Which, if following the tradition of spellcrafting in Morrowind and the like, you will never have a large enough magicka pool to cast that spell even once :D

    This.

The single-player spellcrafting in Morrowind was balanced enough that any kind of nuke-everything-to-hell-and-back spell was too costly to actually work. I'm sure the devs will make sure that the system can't grant you excessively powerful effects.

Im more interested in what they consider a spell. If it is anything that cost magika seems like it could be entertaining. Although how they would limit/control it should be interesting. For example as a templar will i be able to craft using spells from other classes or will i only be able to craft using my own?

In daoc spellcrafting was enchanting. In TES it allowed you make make spells. Who knows what they are considering. I do eagerly await more info.

I would be happy if spell crafting was tied to staves. If we could enchant staves with new and exciting effects, that could be pretty cool.

I am interested to see how this is done in this game, as we don't use "spells" in the traditional sense with abilities. But who knows? Maybe we'll be able to craft abilities.

Dunno, perhaps spells/skill will become augmentable? Like enchantments glyphs, only for abilities.

I just hope it won't be something like scribing - you know, where you put spells on parchments and get a one-time use item to put in your quickslot. That's not really ES style spellcrafting, but it could be hyped as such.

If they do make real spellcrafting, it will be pretty sweet. Making your own spells was a huge part of playing a mage in earlier ES games. Especially one shot fireballs. Drains all of your magicka, but man, it hits like a train. A train that is also on fire. :D

I'm curious if we'll be able to craft our own summoning spells.

This could potentially kill any need for new classes and such. While also the playing field great diversity.

For what it's worth, this is what they said about it:

I know! I can't tell you how excited I am to have it in game as well. I don't want to give ALL the spoilers just yet...but I'll maybe I'll drop one or two.
First one for you, since your thread was the first one I saw: In crafting spells, you'll be rediscovering the traditional Elder Scrolls schools of magic (alteration, destruction, etc).

Maybe new spell abilities, maybe quickslot scrolls or something, guess we'll see, but sounds neat.

For me personally, I'm hoping it won't be anything like scroll-making. Sure, there were scrolls in previous TES games, but that'd really be the last straw for me. Magic in the game already feels rather divorced from TES games, and being forced to use a weapon to even shoot a freakin fireball is starting to wear on me. Since I've always played an "unarmed" mage in all other TES games.

I'm kinda hoping that "Spell crafting" is basically a complete revamp of the use of magic in the game, so that it's more like the previous ES games.

Just like jared says, less dependancy on using staffs for basic attacks and more emphasis on the "traditional" schools of magic found in ES games. Leaving the staffs to be like they were in previous games.....grant additional benefits.

Having seen the ESO QuakeCon 2014 presentation -
I love the return of Spellmaking from Oblivion BUT I think the impact of Spellmaking means a necessary overhaul of the game's magic system into spell schools. That's how it worked in Oblivion and Skyrim but now we will end up with these two spell systems trying to co-exist.

If you can make spells with Spellmaking as powerful as ultimates why bother hunting down all the lore books for the lackluster Mage's guild ultimate?
What about alteration spells like Feather, Burden, and Chameleon from Oblivion?
Does this mean that spellmaking lets you do damage as good as or better than class skills?

I think it would be useful to know answers to these as well..
Are spells created with spellmaking improved by mage's guild passives or abilities? Which spell school are mage's guild skills considered to be in? How potent will they be compared with maxed out and morphed class skills?

I said from the beginning that should have just made it a skill based game with no classes. Maybe it's time they just abandoned the idea once and for all.

Not entirely true - with the alchemy exploit(Intelligence potions) in Morrowind you could have infinite magica

lmao, so you really do want world of sorcerers? That idea would basically ensure everyone uses a staff.
