After Some Soul Searching

Yesterday I took the drastic step of cancelling my one-month recurring subscription ...

Unlike many who post here I'm not infatuated with the game; it's got a lot of problems, some serious, most are annoyances. And, unlike most of the people looking through rose-colored glasses I'm not particularly confident the devs can or will solve these issues. Some are endemic to server architecture; while others, like the bot-gold seller situation, are likely here to stay in one form or another.

I briefly considered going back to SWTOR, TSW, or even the original GW (which I still adore, btw), but I've played those through many times over and am no more thrilled with their economic mechanisms than I am with ESO's. Quite fleetingly I even thought about resurrecting my very old account on WoW, but hell no.

... so, I modified my ESO account to a six-month subscription. One way or another I will find a way to make this game work for me.

Cheers, y'all

Glad to hear you're giving the game a little more of a chance. Your confidence might be stronger than you think if you're going the six month sub route ;) I have a lot of confidence.. and am one of those infatuated with the game, and think the devs are gonna iron out the bugs and all (I've ever been called a fanboy/white knight).. but I wouldn't buy a six month sub. So you have me beat there.

The one game I did buy a six month sub for was SWTOR.. and well.. we all know how that one turned out. I do tend to be overly optimistic for every MMO though. I am pretty sure I've been called a die hard defender and a fanboy for every launch I've taken part of. Go me.

Interestingly, some years back I tried Rift for a month or so. It didn't take. I'm probably way too picky -- if an environment is too dark it depresses me, and with my illness I don't do at all well with things jumping out at me unexpected. I used to be a rollercoaster junkie, but you wouldn't catch me near one of those today either.

Very early in my MMO life I was highly sought after as a healer for raids and dungeons, but gradual loss of motor control and hand-eye coordination have reduced me to concentrating on crafting and economics.

Haha! Oh it's alive and well here, trust me. I don't mind though.

To the OP: If you haven't already, I'd also recommend Archeage whenever Trion ends up sending into beta and such. It's got a lot of the same old stuff from past MMOs, but the world is pretty, and the skill trees are pretty interesting. My boyfriend doesn't like ESO at all..doesn't really like quests (don't ask me why he plays RPGs in general), but he had been playing Archeage on the Russian server in downtime and I'd play with him sometimes. It's not really something I'd get heavy into, but it'll be free so worth a try if you're looking for something new.

I speak ONLY for myself, with no pretense whatsoever of a communitywide judgment. I played SWTOR from beta and onwards for eight months. Frankly, I did not find it a bad game. The questing, spaceships on rails, initial lack of end-game content bothered me very little. Inevitably what drove me off was having raised seven alts to cap, the crippled crafting/economy (it was always gimped, but the cash shop exacerbated the problem). Mostly, however, I think SWTOR was hurt by things external to the game -- EA allowed it to be hyped too much prior to launch, which raised player expectations unreasonably; and the player community did the rest of the work by way of unremitting, and frequently unfounded negativity.

Sad to admit, I am not immune to player negativity. I wish it weren't so, but thread upon thread castigating any game is likely, as not, to put me off on the game. I know this about myself, but I am utterly bereft to counter it.

Yeah, my problem with SWTOR was end-game related for the most part. I liked the class storylines up to a point. I was an operative and after this one big twist part the story beyond it just seemed dull. Then I got to end game and I was at a point in my life when I couldn't raid.. so I tried rolling some alts, which I've admittedly never been good at doing and then just gave up probably around 2 months in. It's worth noting the my playstyle then was a bit different than it is today. I was one of those "omg have to get to max level" people because I was in a raid-focused guild that had come over from WoW. However, kid happened and raiding went bye bye, but I still felt like I was behind everyone.. and yeah. Didn't work out so well. That likely had a lot to do with me not liking the game too.

It's kind of funny to me how you don't sound at all confident in the game yet are agreeing to a six month commitment to it. I've been labeled a "whiteknight" and "fanboy" plenty of times on this forum and I haven't yet strayed from my month-to-month plan. While I'm fairly confident I'll still be here much longer than one month, I never really do know for sure. Does that mean you're the fanboy here and I'm the cynical realist? :P

Likely it's none of the above. I'm hedging my bet that I'll be around for at least six-months -- even though I've played many MMOs, I tend to stay with them for many months, sometimes years.

Before launch I took the remarkably OCD step in creating a business model. Due to ESO's current and likely future economic state I'll never fully realize all my objectives, but I can hit some of them and my estimate is six months to do so. And as a pragmatist, paying 12.99 monthly vice 14.99 makes better sense, however trivial. Also, my game has nothing whatsoever to do with leveling. Based on my current rate, if I've got my three main alts to cap in six months I will be terribly surprised.

You know what, Eris, if I could find a non-profane group of mature people to at least converse with via TeamSpeak (or Mumble, Ventrillo, etc) I could probably feel the same. I'm not the most social player on the planet, but it would be nice to have some friends in-game (yes, I know this is my fault).

I have been loving ESO and i am one of the lucky ones that don't run into alot of bugs. My video card needs updating so even tho there is some server lag most of my issues are because of my crappy card. (updating soon lol). I wouldn't say that ppl who like the game are seeing it through rose colored glasses.. Maybe just not having as many issues. I have not ran into a bugged quest for at least 2 weeks. (well anything that a relog wont fix). I think i leveled a little slower then most so maybe thats why (almost 50 now)

I really think the game as improved so much, since launch and is only gonna get better. Glad u are giving ESO a chance i really think its gonna keep getting better. I find ESO one of those games i can sit down and play and hours go by and i didnt even notice it. Thinking to my self " Ooo crap its 3am". That for me is a good game :)

I gotta say i was hoping on less trolls and just that whole negative zone chat & forum experience MMO's tend to get these days. I was really hoping for a more mature community. Hoping over time the negativity and troll like behavior goes away. That is prob my biggest issue with ANY MMO.

I will stay month to month but i plan to be around a long time :)....

Even if this were officially the general discussion forum, how is this of general interest? Imagine if everyone made a new thread when they decided to come and go.

Beyond that, the whole rose colored glasses remark is willfully obtuse. ESO is a different game than WoW, by design, and your accusation that no one could honestly prefer the design choices made by the developers is slanderous.

ESO isn't in need of fixing, refinement sure, but it's not broken, it's just a different game.

@Jenasy The problems I have with ESO are largely personal, and that certainly does not convey to a notion the game is broken in any measure. In my first day of play I raised a character to 14, then promptly deleted her because I realized she did not fit into my overall game plan. I have not done a quest since and have raised four more alts to 11, adhering strictly to my overall strategy. Having said that, it's obvious there was no way I could possibly encounter the problems others write about so frequently. I'm very glad you're enjoying yourself so much, and I wish you the best with your new graphics card.

It may be more that this thread is kinda skirting the line of the "no goodbye thread" rule in the forum TOS. A dev may pop in at one point to close the thread. *shrug*

That said, @Abigail, glad to see you staying on! Sneaky you, adding a twist to your post!

Personally, I've been a fan of the Elder Scrolls series since Morrowind, so I was always going to give this game more slack than most. Yes, it's buggy and far from perfect, but that's pretty par for the course in Elder Scrolls games, so it's all just part of the experience for me! :D

    Living vicariously through my characters.

    My Girls:
"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

(Signature idea shamelessly stolen from Abeille.)

BTW I like your little quote of:

"What happened here is that you, like oh so many others, bought ESO with a preconceived notion of what you wanted it to be, rather than investigating for yourself what it actually was. Aside from bugs, everything you have listed is an intended design choice of the game developers that you just happen to not agree with. Had you made the least bit of effort you could have discovered these aspects of the game before purchasing and saved us all a lot of headache and belly moaning."

So I gave you a awesome!

Play the game for yourself, if you enjoy it, who cares about the technical details? Just because others don't like it doesent mean you have to let that ruin the game for yourself. If I always went off of what everyone else says; I wouldnt like very much in this world.
