Horse stamina - misleading or bugged?

So I'm not sure most people are even aware of this but horses right now have unlimited stamina. In that if you don't release the sprint button as your stamina bar is empty you can keep sprinting indefinitely. Stamina is also used to determine how easily you are knocked off your horse.

Here's where we run into a problem. Every single piece of information you can find about stamina in the game talks about how it increases how long you can sprint, for both horses and players. Nowhere in the game is it mentioned that your horse has unlimited sprint as long as you continue to hold down the button.

Now the reason this is an issue is because there is a horse that costs 42,000 gold. This horse is given the description that it has more stamina than the other two options. However due to reasons above that makes this horse the worst choice of the 3, investing stamina on a horse is all but pointless.



I would absolutely love some clarification on this. Is this how stamina is supposed to work and the description of stamina (and the horse) is just misleading, or is it bugged and eventually going to be fixed?

As a side note, an option to reset the points you've gained for your horse would be nice.

Nah, just kidding. I do believe it is a bug, as the horse should stop sprinting after the bar finishes. But let's be honest, a lot of people will be sad when this bug goes

I do agree though that it makes the Stamina horse less viable. Hopefully (or unhopefully) they will change this.

Yeah well, I've been sitting on this for a while now. I don't want to give into the idea that I wasted a lot of gold on the wrong horse so I hope the stamina thing will eventually be fixed. I didn't learn about the stamina thing until after I bought my horse.

If people have an issue with that then I don't know what to tell them.

That said, if the horse has zero stamina and gets hit once it goes away, which is not the case when it has more. So it still does serve a purpose.

Yes. But the purpose of this thread is to determine if that is the intended mechanic or if it's a bug. And if a bug will it be fixed any time soon? And then if it's not a bug the misleading descriptions really need to be changed.

Nothing about it in the 1.1 ptr notes sadly.

i for one hope it stays the way it is. horse stamina works as hit points for the horse. one hit with no horse stamina gives a pretty harsh penalty in the stun, every second counts in combat.

It's probably a bug, but the stamina regenerates so fast that if it's just for travel it still seems better to me to go for speed even if it is fixed. I'd look at the stamina more for keeping mounted while taking a few hits.

Higher Horse Stamina = less chance to be knocked off the horse.
Also when stamina runs out, the horse should be returning to normal speed but its a know bug, but not high on the 'to be fixed' list

It's not a bug. It was explained in beta.

Basically.
Not pressing sprint=Trot
Hold sprint with stamina remaining=Full Gallop
Hold sprint with no stamina=Slow Gallop
Tap Sprint=Horse sprint(only works with some stamina remaining)

The stamina bar for the horse also works as it's health. If you look at it's stamina bar when you take a hit you'll notice it depletes a little. If you get hit with no stamina remaining you will be dismounted.

Edit: I haven't actually noticed a speed difference between full gallop and slow gallop, there might be one but it's not huge. However, the slow gallop does make you vulnerable to the one shot dismount.

If I tab the sprint on a horse and it has stamina, yes it goes faster the Full Gallop.

The bug is there is no speed different between Full Gallop and Slow Gallop and there should be if you want to make stamina horses any good.

Trot = Normal Horse Speed (You normal walk speed x the speed bonus of the horse

Slow Gallop = Horse Run Speed (Your normal run speed x the speed bonus of the horse)

Full Gallop = Horse Run Speed (Your normal run speed x the speed bonus of the horse)

Tap Sprint = Horse Run Speed + 50% bonus (so if it 25% is now 38%)

Still looks like a bug to me. But if they fix it... how many people will be annoyed and now what to buy the black stamina horse? (which I got anyway, as it looked nicer)

I guess I should have been a bit more explicit: the horse description is not entirely misleading.

Scenario One: regular horse using the stamina glitch (I am personally convinced it *is* a glitch and will be patched eventually) is riding along, stamina goes down to zero, then gets hit by a stray arrow or whatnot. Rider is suddenly horseless and must deal with the attack.

Scenario Two: gaited horse is trotting from the same starting point, crosses the same encounter, arrow hits the horse but... it still has stamina. Rider keeps going until it pulls out of range of the attack.

So it's not that the gaited horse is *useless* (though honestly, you're probably better off buying one the cheaper ones and training it) it's just that there is only one specific benefit you get from stamina, rather than two. Stamina is currently a horse's "hit points" and nothing else.

I do expect this will be updated eventually.

I'm not convinced any of that makes any difference in how fast your horse actually goes. It's all placebo. Besides that, that is not what this topic is about.

Is this really the case? If my imperial horse runs out of stamina, I can see a clear speed drop.

What? When my horse runs out of stamina, its speed drops a little until it regains the first sliver of its stamina back.

I think of it like Epona's carrots meter in Ocarina of Time. I can hold the sprint button down, but Epona won't go faster until one of her carrots comes back. When it does, she instantly starts going faster, but only for a brief moment.

Maybe it's just the horse I have, or this "bug" only affects certain players, but my horse definitely, for certain, with 100% positivity does not have unlimited stamina, even when I hold the sprint button.

its stupid Horses cant run always it should be like on feet if stamina is out no faster speed.... this would be the only way that stamina horse has any purpose

The developers previously stated that this is working as intended (right here, second to last question). Horses can sprint indefinitely, but stamina is used for tap bursts and for better dismount resistance. They also stated that "future mounts" would have different abilities.

Being able to maintain sprinting at zero stamina is intended (for horses). They've said that this is only going to be a horse feature, and that other mount types in the future will have different 'abilities' unique to them - but will not be able to continue sprinting at zero stamina.

Stamina on a horse is not for sprinting... That's why you keep sprinting. On a horse you can't fall off until stam is 0 and sprinting/ taking damage drains stam. So if you run without sprinting on a fully leveled stam horse a single attacker will unlikely knock you off. If your running around with zero stam thinking how lucky you are your still sprinting your just easy one shot prey.

This is not a bug. I remember reading (or viewing?) a Q+A about horses with "unlimited stamina." I first noticed it way back in Beta (when they allowed the Imperial Horses). I remember Zenimax stating that this was intended...it was a unique feature of the "horse mount" that you could keep sprinting even after their stamina was depleted. However, with no stamina, it is easier for you to be knocked off your horse should you be hit. If your horse still has stamina, it is harder for you to be knocked off.

I know my source is not exactly specific or concrete, but I know I read/heard this somewhere because I used to submit this "bug" a lot in-game, and I stopped submitting it when I heard the news.

And...rumor has it that when new mounts are introduced, they will have different unique features.

We've certainly seen a number of folks mention that same idea. It's not currently in our plans to respec horses, but we've passed the feedback along to the team and it is being considered.

It did not say "Choose your path, and or choices are all the best. Changing anything will be free"?

The feature ESO have to "choose your path" and live your choices is one MAIN part why I play it. Also its almost unique to MMOs today.

Please let the DEVS know, to not take that away.

Horse stamina is more useful for tapping the sprint button, not the duration you can sprint.

Always seemed to be working at intended to me.

And thank you for that! I think a good way to do this, is not a respec per se, but rather a reset. So you can get a lvl zero mount again (hence help you not to purchase a new mount for 42.k gold). Why is this good? Well, like the noob I was I spend some points in different attributes (well not stamina, since I knew this was worthless). So I have a packmount with 10 pts speed. This is not BAD but i'd prefer a 100% 'pure' breed

This would still get a gold sink tied to your mount (new apples etc still cost 250g a day), yet also friendly to more casual players who thinks 42.k is a lot of gold.

Also, such a system will be more friendly to future changes to how the mount system works.

Oh, and can we have a shared mount tab in stables... pretty please

The tooltip is misleading but it's not bugged. The current implementation is by design.
