New player wonders "what am I missing?"

ripleyblue1ub17_ESO
I haven’t seen this addressed anywhere, so I’m wondering if anyone else is having problems maneuvering through the game. I feel like I MUST be missing something really obvious.

I’ve seen players running backwards, sidestepping, running circles around the mob, all the time firing their spells and arrows - very impressive! How do they do that?

Seems like I need a third hand if I want to block and interrupt (mouse), run around (AWSD), and use skills (1-5 keys).

I have a Logitech trackball mouse and a standard keyboard.

Thanks everyone!

Some people have mice with a seperate number keypad on the side (which you use your thumb to press), much like the Razer Naga, I suppose they could be activating abilities using this?

Try the Naga on for size first because they are fine for small hands but take a bit of getting used to for larger hands.

If you double tap, ASDW, the directions keys, it will allow you to sprint in the respective direction; this may be something you have seen.

    A trackball?

I miss using trackballs ... they were fun (A trackball Shimond is where you 'move' the mouse using your fingers or thumb as opposed to moving the entire mouse using your hand / wrist - a little hard to explain, but just google one and you'll see)

I'm well aware of what a trackball is :P

I cannot see how you can effectively utilize one in a 3d MMO. That's like keyboard turning in a FPS.

Oh it's easy really, provided you don't want all the extra buttons a gaming mouse offers. I used to play the BF series using one effectively.

If you use WASD you are greatly reducing the buttons your little finger and your ring finger can use, try RDFG or even TFGH, I use my ring finger for 3 abilites and my little finger for menus. I also have a Razer deathadder, which adds 2 buttons so I can use with my thumb. The default keybinds are terrible for ergonomics, 1-5 is hardly optimal, put the buttons you use more for combat around your movement keys.

I have a Razer Naga Hex ( Only 6 buttons on the thumb ). Not too confusing for this blonde and wildly awesome for ESO, which exactly why I bought it.

Yeah trackball isn't a good choice for this kind of game. Any gaming mouse with a couple of extra keys at least will be helpful. I use an old Logitech G9 myself

As others have mentioned.. using a gaming mouse like a naga helps. That's what I have and I'm one of those people constantly moving while hitting enemies.

I use a gamepad for my left hand and a razer naga in my right, I never use the keyboard unless I am typing to somebody but yeah these two peices of equipment makes life so much easier :)

Thanks everyone! I got so used to moving and turning easily and smoothly with my mouse (RMB run, ball to turn) in LOTRO, its just hard to learn a new trick (old dog :p) but I suppose practice will help. I will look into a Razer Naga mouse and moving my left hand to the right to provide access to more keys as RaZaddha suggested.

I use a gamepad for my left as well (logitech G13) and a razer naga for my right. rarely use the actual keyboard (in the middle of my setup) except for typing. This allows me MMO acrobatics galore!
  • ripleyblue1ub17_ESO
UPDATE!! I tried the Razer Naga Hex but its just not big enough – makes my hand cramp. The Logitech Trackball I’ve been using for years is much bigger and supports my palm and fingers both and is easy on the wrist. Is there a gaming mouse out there that has buttons on the side like the Naga Hex but is a good bit bigger in size?
Have any of you with a trackball (if there are any) been successful at changing the keybinds around so you feel you can play the game?

    Thanks!

I think you should just keep practicing. Muscle memory will eventually allow you to move just as fluidly as the other people that you're seeing.

The Razer Naga changed my gaming when I got one for SWTOR. I'd highly recommend it. I have the older style Naga Molten and the two extra buttons are in a bad place, but they moved them for 2014 edition. The glowiness of the Nagas is rather snazzy.

I believe Logitech do a mouse with 12 buttons on it as well now. The Logitech G600.

You might even consider something like a G13, though I've never used anything like it.

You can also get gaming keyboards with macros on them. A friend recently bought the K95 and I believe he's dead chuffed.

I found the naga very nice for laying down area effect circles for aoe heal or damage.
    (2) or (3) side button then left key to trigger.
The side buttons are are also a benefit as I find it easy to mix up the 3,4,5 on keyboard.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Bah, all those kiddies and their newfangled thingamagic mouses. :p

I use the good old Logitech Trackman
    tmw440.jpg
with standard button layout and it´s perrrrrfekt for this game and especially my wrist´s carpal tunnels!
And it´s actually superior as I can turn much faster than with the average mouse.

After 10+ years of mouseslingin´ you´ll all be sorry for relying on your Nagas.

@ripleyblue1ub17_ESO just take the advice somebody posted earlier about moving the WASD just one key to the right or even two.

Though I must admit for my WASD etc. need I do use the trusty Belkin52te
    belkin-n52te-review-20080229041917793-000.jpg
sadly discontinued now too for Razer Nostromo (I bought too).
Whose build quality is definitely inferior to the original Belkin, yay for Chinese price efficiency.:'(

Oh boy, I love my G13. But a picture search makes it go pale in comparison what other manufacturers have to offer under that title.

Rotherhans – that is my mouse exactly! (well, not exactly, I’ve got two more small mouse buttons - MB4 & MB5- and the ball is blue – other than that exactly!) And oh yea, mine is wireless :) I’m surprised more people don’t use them – very comfy and no wrist strain. With the Naga I had to pick up the mouse and move it to reorient the cursor and I found it hard to grasp between my thumb and pinkie.
Earlier tonight with my trackball I made the LMB and RMB run forward and backward (instead of WASD) and changed some other keybinds and that wasn’t too bad.
Thanks for all the suggestions – I’ll give the Naga a few more days practice and see if the muscle memory starts to kick in!

I have a Logitech Trackball Pro, a wireless thing. It has several useable buttons as well as the normal set. I have 3 bound on my mouse.

I use ASDLeftAlt and I have no trouble moving around, it's easy.

I have Shift and Z as my two other hot bar setting with c for ultimate.

Works just fine. My attack spam is impressive even. ;) It is amazing how many things you can get to go off in a short time, if you practice a bit.

I beg to differ. I can't use a mouse anymore nor have been able to for years due to an RSI injury (a bit too much clicking with Diablo I am afraid - yes seriously, that is how I injured my hand). I can pretty much own with a trackball now though especially in FPS games.

I also use the wireless logitech trackball pro with the extra buttons near the index finger. its so easy to just whip the ball to the side and do a 180 in fps without effort. tie in a few skills to the extra buttons and there really is no trouble. the time it takes to pick up the traditional 'gaming' mouse and move it to the other side of the pad so i can continue looking got me killed a few times, went to trackball and never looked back.
