ESO Race - Why do you choose yours?

I'm curious to see why people choose their race on ESO.

Do you choose based on aesthetics?
Or perhaps to maximize your build?
Or because you want to be in a specific alliance?
Something else?

Combination of aesthetics and racial traits. Since I pre-ordered faction isn't really a concern. Though part of me feels like BECAUSE I have that perk I shouldn't be a race that's normally part of the faction - it's annoying.

I was a High Elf Necromancer in Skyrim so I am an Altmer Sorcerer here. Sadly I have yet to find my raise dead spell...

I have the same problem lol!

I made my Bosmer in the Covenant just to be a rebel. 20 levels in I started getting "homesick" so I'm remaking in Aldmeri Dominion.

I always play a magic using elf if I can. It's a fantasy world and I want to live my fantasy. I was a Breton in Oblivion though because the elves were all ugly so appearance counts as well.
Scura di Notte - Altmer Nightblade (gear)
Lalin del Sombra - Bosmer Sorcerer (alchemy/enchanting)
    Angevin Sarkany - Bosmer Dragonknight
Alkemene Velothi - Dunmer Warden (Morrowind)
Sanna yos'Phalen - Altmer Sorcerer (provisioning)

I picked an Argonian because I like the lore. I have always loved them and there light hearted "go where the river takes you" attitude. The whole thing with the hist is amazing.

Unfortunately there racials are sort of meh in this game. and they don't even have health regen... really? histskin?

They were equally ugly in Skyrim. They resembled ailiens more than acctual elves (well, acctual fantasy creatures we know as elves  ).
    Glad they fixed that.

I chose Breton, because in every other ES game I have been a Breton...

The Passives have always been optimal for my playstyle. I prefer casters, and dislike Elves, so Breton was always the choice for me.

In Skyrim I always played a sneaky archer-type. A sniper who dual-weilded when needed. So, I went Bosmer Nightblade. Bosmer because I have always loved them. The Green Pact. The nobility of it all, the unpretentiousness. Even the Bosmer King is a laid-back and kinda aww-shucks kinda guy. I like that. Bosmer are simply themselves.

My other Character is a 2-hander weilding Nord Dragon Knight.. because nothin' says lovin' like 7' of heavily armored, fire-spewing, blond *** charging at you with a weapon bigger than most Bosmer.
Edited by Azzuria on April 24, 2014 7:46PM
Brunhilda Icehammer - Nord Dragonknight, 'Smith & Enchantress 'What is 'ranged? I need to hit something!!'
Laehl Direthorn - Bosmer Nightblade, Purveyor of fine Clothes, Bows and Staves
Reeza gra-Zuni - Orc Templar 'War Shaman' and Apothecary
Noemi Snowpaw - Kajiit Dragon Knight - I laugh... or I'd have to kill you.
Kitera Dreamon - Breton of The Dominion: Because those Daggers don't appreciate a great Mage.
Lysara Shadowcroft - Dunmer Bloodmage: This will only hurt a lot.

I picked a couple of my race/class combos due to the class+race skills that I felt fit together.
Then I still have a couple of slots used for storage, that later on might be deleted and remade into playing alts as well, but for now they were just chosen randomly
We're born, we live, we die. And along the way, you do the best with whatever crap you step in :p

Truth be told, I decide what class/weapon style I want to play and then choose a race with matching bonuses. I realize that's not very exciting.

I wanted something that was not an elf. Elves have become so overused and cliche in the fantasy genre now that they are completely unappealing to me.

I have never liked the beast races either, and if I had my way, they would not even be a playable race at all. I'd like to see the fantasy genre go back to it's roots.

Purely aesthetics. All of my current toons are based off of my own OCs. Even my crotchety old clothing alt :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Sorcerer Claudia Warren May, lvl 40. Woodworking 25/Clothing 25/Provisioning 50.
    Dragon Knight, lvl 8. Blacksmithing/Enchanting.

I eventually plan on playing every race at least once, but I chose to start with a Dunmer for historical reasons. Every elder scrolls game I've played so far I've started as a dunmer, since they were the 'jack-of-all-trades' race. It's my own little tradition.

Ork because ... big green and grrrr looking. Like mini hulks.

Redguard I just like the look of.

Dark Elf because i've had a Dark Elf assassin in the past three Elder Scrolls games so why not.

I have become a bit of an alt-aholic, so I'm sporting 8 characters right now, lol. I chose Argonian as my main, because I love the Aztec vibe and the Cyrodiilic naming conventions.

I have chosen race for different reasons in ESO. Sometimes I have an idea for a build first, then determine which races I can visualize in that role. I typically don't want more than 1 character of the same race for variety reasons, so that comes in to play too. Another thing that I'll consider from the very beginning is whether or not the character will be a vampire or Werewolf, which can also lead to my race decision.

I probably put much less concern in racial skills than most on here.
Catches-the-Sun - Argonian Templar - Master Smith, Provisioner, Chemist & Tailor
Valaren Arobone - Dunmer Flamewalker - Master Woodworker, Provisioner, Assassin
Kazahad - Khajiiti Arcane Archer - Master Thief
    V'orkten - Redguard Swordmaster
Finnvardr the Frenzied - Werewolf Berzerker

Lol! Yah, I wouldn't personally call Bosmer laid back, but I love them too. Personally I think they're the most interesting of the normal playable races of Tamriel, so I play them too.

I always play a Dunmer, ever since I first picked up Morrowind back in the day. There was no question that my main would be a Dunmer here.

For alts, I usually pick races based on roleplay reasons. In the Dominion, I wanted to be the lowly Khajiit who laughed in the face of the uppity elves and then proceeded to chop them to pieces with her gigantic greatsword.

For Covenant, I somehow ended up with a mild-mannered Argonian healer who left the Pact for philosophical reasons (read: slavery). It's been a very interesting roleplay.
    Living vicariously through my characters.

    My Girls:
"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

(Signature idea shamelessly stolen from Abeille.)
