crafted sets and gear color

I have noticed that when i craft my gear without any set bonuses its all gold but with a set or more its all green. does anyone know if color is specific to sets or is there just 2 colors: with or without a set?
i would love to see a guide to set colors weather you can mix sets to get even different appearances. of course i will always just pick the best set for me over color but its a interesting feature.
on a side note in character creation the vet gear (the gear I'm crafting) for Templar is gold while dragon knight is black, so there must be more right? i havent crafted black yet.
