What does "disorient" do?

I was extremely satified when I could finally morph my Dragonknight ability into Eruption:
Morphed from Ash Cloud
Enemies in the area of effect become disoriented for 2 seconds.
Disorient sounds like a great ability in PvP and very helpfull in PvE. However, I have come to the conclusion it doesn't seem to do anything against humanoid enemies. Even against monsters and animals I wonder if it actually does anything. If you test it out in-game you will notice what I am talking about.

Could anyone clear up what disorient should look like and in what way I could benefit from it?

Think of it as a mez from any other mmo. Hit them and it knocks them out of mez early.

Disoriented targets are unable to do any actions, but unlike stun, disorient wears off when target get damaged.

If you try to disorient target that is under DoT effect (Damage over Time) it will wear off almost instantly. Maybe that is the issue?

Disoriented = Long Disable... cannot peform any action. However, any damage will break it.

It does what stun and interrupt do, puts the mob out of action for a short time, but unlike skills that achieve those effects it doesn't need the mobs to do something to make the skill that inflicts the debuff available and as @Asava points out taking damage brings them to their senses.
