The Point of Dark Anchors

Whenever a dark anchor spawns nearby, I always head to it, as does most everyone else in the area. We fight stuff -pew pew! - and then the portal closes.

Why did we do that?

I keep participating in these things because I feel like I'm missing the point, and if I keep participating, I'll discover what it is. But I haven't discovered it so far. I've never gotten any benefit from a dark anchor event, so far as I can tell. Walking across the landscape killing random mobs is more productive in terms of loot. So what's the point in participating in a dark anchor event? I don't get it.

Well, aside from the fun, you get extra XP and Fighters Guild XP the first time you clear an anchor.

The lore standpoint is that you're repelling Molag Bal's attempts to gain physical footholds on Tamriel and in a sense drag it into Oblivion.

From a meta standpoint, I wouldn't mind seeing greater repercussions if they aren't repelled. If a Dark Anchor remains active for a week, there should be a roving horde of Daedra terrorizing the land, forcing players to rouse a veritable army to thwart them.

Perhaps we'll see such things in the future. GM-hosted events even, once they get the bulk of current issues under control and have some time to get creative again.

I've never gotten any benefit from a dark anchor event,

Based on my own experience Dark Anchors provide:

    1. A good deal of experience (that is if you end up doing a lot of damage on the mobs), if you have foundry tactical combat running you can see the XP dropping when working on Anchor mobs and it's not insignificant.
    2. Occasionally some decent loot drops.
    3. Some leveling with Undaunted.
    4. At least one achievement.

Not a ton of benefits but they can be fun with the right amount of people and they don't really take up a lot of time.

Hope that helps & Happy Hunting.

Would be fun if leaving the portal open longer caused more effects in the world, like having daedra start flooding out a-la Rift.

Or, alternatively, if it's not closed in time that section of the map goes to Cold Harbor. No one's destroying the dark anchors? No zone for you! (Not a real idea)

Great idea! could lead to quite a few fun scenarios. :)

When you close the first 4 anchor pinions a "boss" mob comes at the end with a few other regular mobs. This can be a generic boss such as a Dread Clannfear or something such as that. There are also named bosses though that give an achv when killed. They also seem to give better loot, I was able to get a staff with a set bonus i've yet to find anywhere else and was named after the boss I killed. There are plenty of these named bosses and it seems to be random if you get one of these or just a generic boss at the end of an anchor fight. Anyways fighting the anchors is one of the most enjoyable parts of the game for me. I don't enjoy it when there are 10 people there and everything dies instantly, I enjoy it when it's me and 1 other person fighting hordes of deadra and trying to stop the anchor alone. I was unable to solo any but all it took was 1 more person and we were able to do it. It was a ton of fun and I suggest anyone looking for a challenge to try it.

I like when mini portals spawn on me out of know where.
