Looking for advice on tanking

Amfijakerwb17_ESO
Hi guys.

I just tried out tanking for the first time. It was in a veteran dungeon and i got demolished. I apologized to my group and left. Now im looking for some advice as to where i went wrong. The problem was solely that i died far too fast.

My first question is this: is blocking something i should be doing while killing trash? I assumed that it was a mecanic primarily used on bosses.

Both my weapons slots are one handed and shield. My abilities are these on my Dragon Knight:

First bar(the idea was that this would be meant for groups):
Shielded assault, Ransack, Deep Breath, Burning Talons and Volatile Armor.

Second bar(this was meant for big baddies)
Deep slash, ransack, Obsidian Shield, Coagulating blood and Volatile armor.

I have 26 points invested in magicka and 23 in health. I assume this isnt the optimal build but since i levelled as a caster this seemed like a good way to go. I was wearing 5 pieces of heavy and 2 light.

When going into a group with volatile armor on it just didnt seem like enough. Wich buffs should i always have on when engaging?

Im primarily hoping to hear advice from players tanking in veteran dungeons.

Thanks before hand.

Ok so first think is your attributes. I suggest respecing to all 49 in health. I do this because you get +15 in hp for each point, and only +10 in stam and magika. For your gear get rid of any of them with health enchants and replace with stam and magika. More so on the magika if you plan on using more class abilities rather then weapon abilities.

For trash mobs my second ability bar is Duel Wield with AOE abilities.. Your goal for trash is not to hold aggro on all mobs, but to figure out which one is the strongest of the group and keep that person on you, while your group works on the others.

Now 5 heavy and 2 light is very viable and that is fine. A must IMO is the active ability for the heavy armor line called unstoppable, It increases armor and spell resistance for 8 seconds. This ability uses stamina and has no cooldown. I attempt to keep this up at all times. or when I have the stamina to do so. I have this ability on both bars because it helps me when i pull trash, they all focus on me right away and with this ability and i can have it on and take very little damage. Another skill I suggest is Pierce armor from the 1h and shield line, it's the first ability and it is a taunt. I know you also have molten armor which is also extremely helpful. Other then that for other abilities you can pick up ones that can help restore health or lower targets armor and spell resistances, look for abilities that can do this.

I suggest looking at a skill calculator and look at what abilities your class skills morph into and what not.

This is my current build: http://esohead.com/calculator/skills#ccMzytIPbk8IPUI8rrYR8fXGb8fXiO8Ir3D8jKvQ8IPUI8rrYR8w2CO8A4wg8jKEL8p7JMdBvT6MdBvj6MdBEI6MdBEp6cdBET8T7JLRMA6MrqAi6MrqAI6MrqAD6MrqAZ6crqLw8y7HrR3a6LR3r6MfQE16MfQE36MfQlr6MfQlu6MfQlI8t7HLsgZ6Lsg16MwS3c6MwUlN6MwYle6MwYlv6MwYl28g7HrsXy6rsXx6MipLW6MipL46MippV6Mippo6Mippq8C7Drzqa6Lzqq6Lzqu6MGFWc6MGFWi6MGFWA6MGFWn8D7DLzdM6Lzdm6LzdR6MIsaM6MIrv36MIrEf6MIrEh8F7JLzrJ6LzrO6rbux6rbut6MIPNU6MIPAh6MIPAT6MIPAv8O7srdeD6zAZqS6MA3FN6MA3FL6MA4Cb8P7ardYw6zLp4d6cLncp6cLncn6zLncy6zLyjz8Y7srfJu6rfJI6LfJN6zjFYb6zjFYd6zjFYf6MjFYi6MjFYh6MjKBj8zV7pceCGC6ceCAq6zeCp46ceCxV

I am also a vampire that is why I have those abilities, Vamps synergize really well with the NB class. For those who say Vamps cannot tank are completely wrong. A must however is 1000 fire resist enchant, and when you are fighting certain fire bosses it is important to know the mechanics so you can swap mist form onto your bar andwhen their fire ability does appear you can use it and take little to no damage from their fire skills.

I hope this helps, if you have any other questions feel free to ask and i'll do my best. Also if you want to post your build from the skill calculator after changing a few things around ill be happy to check that out as well!

bump, i edited the post for you

Thank you very much for taking your time to post this.

Hmm. After reading this i might wait till rank 10 to start tanking. Respeccing all points to health would severely hamper my questing.

Last thing. You probably forgot my first question :) Its as simple as should i only be blocking while tanking bosses or should i be using it on trash mob as well?

Even while leveling in VR ranks all health attributes really help, you'd be surprised. And yeah, I mean if you see a mob charging up a power attack then block it, or if you see a healer NPC casting a heal on one of them interrupt it, however you shouldn't be holding block down the whole time, only when you see them charging up the power attacks
