Video Card Recomendations

So my video card just puked and is now on it's deathbed. Of course, I would never blame ESO for killing my video card. I won't mention that I happened to be playing ESO a the time and had just stepped outside a building in Malabal Tor when everything went kablooey. :innocent:

Anyway, I'm now in the market for a new video card and would like some recommendations. The catch is that I don't have a very large budget for it right now. Like, stretching it to the max is about $150. Preferably something lower.

I'm hoping to get something that can run ESO pretty well at high settings. Doesn't have to be ultimate, but I don't want to be stuck with blurry graphics just to get playable FPS.

What are your system specifications and what card do you have now?

What resolution do you play at and what card did you have? If you are looking for a latest technology within your budget you'd probably be looking at an AMD R7 260x or a Nvidia GTX 750 ti, or you could go for something older like an HD 7850 which is better than both I think.

Out of Stock :( You could always try ebay for a bargain though.

What I had was a Radeon HD 5700 series. I think 5750 IIRC, but it doesn't really matter at this point. The thing is on it's last legs and can't handle anything more advanced than these forums. And that's with little blue squares all over the screen. If I'm buying a new card, I'd definitely prefer an upgrade if I can get it.

I'm pretty sure I was playing at 1920x1200. I can't run the game to check the settings.

Don't laugh, but did you try to toast your card yet?

I had an AMD card a few years ago and it showed me blue dots on the screen, colors went all goofy etc. and after I baked the card it was all fine again.

    The reason is,

Commercial Electric circuit boars are made of SMT IC’s (Surface Mount Technology). These IC’s are soldered on the board by placing a layer of solder on the board, placing the ic’s and then passing the entire thing through a Oven or a hot air blower. The places of electrical contacts get attached, while the rest of the solder melts and flows away.

Over time, these electrical contacts may develop “Hairline Fractures or cracks” that are not visible to the naked eye. If any such crack disconnects a electrical line or a chip’s pin, then errors occur, depending on the place/chip on the board.

By “Baking” the card in the oven, all u do is to re-melt the non-visible solder, in the hope that it would automatically reflow and repair the connection. (its still pure dumb luck, but with an educated style 8) )

As for the GPU you should buy,

we need to know your PSU first. Check your 12v lanes. A 270x is the best model for price & value right now, but its over your budget sadly. What @Socratic said are good alternatives with less power.

Yeah, I don't see myself baking a video card. :p

Pretty sure this is the PSU I've got.

My advice would be, if it doesn't bother you that is, is lower the resolution in the meanwhile if your graphics are too choppy. It should help bump up the FPS while you wait for your new card.

@Audigy interesting read, could of proved useful to me not long ago if I knew that for something.

Uh, yeah, choppy graphics are not the problem. The video card is toast. Right now, with just mozilla open, I have flickering blue squares all over the screen. If I try to play a video file of any kind, what I get is modern art. The kind that looks like the painter swallowed five colors of paint and spewed it onto the canvas. Trying to run a video game in this state is an exercise in futility.

So I'm pretty much unable to do anything but browse internet forums until I get a new card.

There is a known issue with the way the game plays on a 780 Ti, I don't know what to suggest but I believe its been said that Nvidia have a driver in the pipelines.

Also there is an issue with SLI giving far lower fps than a single GPU setup is giving.

Your comment gives me hope, i wasn't aware there was an issue with the 780.

Some people have been blaming my cpu.

I have an amd fx 8350 sitting at 4.5 ghz, I know it's not as good as the more expensive Intels, but shouldn't be that bad. And other games are fine.

I don't go with the whole " CPU demanding game" thing that being thrown about, I am running an i5 ivy bridge @ 3.5ghz and its not stopping my game or bottle necking anything my CPU sits on 35%-45% average.

I don't know if you have looked into it or if you you can even use it without an MSI motherboard but ......

MSI do a GPU extention that works with the "gaming app" you got with your card, its called VGA boost and what it does is when you open the gaming app and can select between quiet-gaming-OC a little box appears on it that you click to take the OC mode to higher automatically and safely.

Yeah used the boost that came with the card, yet again does nothing for eso yet works for other games.

I was running a gtx 560 ti at max game graphics. That was running 26 to 35 fps in crowds and 50 to 75 in open world. Cooling fan blew up so I upgraded. Gtx 770 ti for $199 because I wanted it immediately. Max graphics, 45 to 55 fps in crowds and 75 to 95 fps in open world. And the 770 has peaked at 43c temp so far so it's running far cooler and isn't really being taxed.

GTX 750 (regular, not Ti) on ultra-high and never dropped below 35 fps yet...You can pick one up for <$150. Just make sure you have the PCIe 3.0 slot to place it in for max performance.

Go here to see relative performance of all major video cards

...that way you can see if spending the extra $XX is worth the performance boost!
