Is LOL always a bad response to a post?

I'm not sure, but i like to think of it that they found it funny in a good way.. Maybe because i seem to have a fair few "LOL" responses.

How does this topic warrant a thread?

... in the CS forum, no less.

Because there are no general discussion forums?

So a random thought just gets thrown down in a forum just as random?

Where's the logic in that? This is spam that just clutters the mantel.

Words contained in posts, at which point I stop reading and will not respond...
Toon / Mana / WoW or any acronym following "In ___" /
Pets (when referring to summoned Daedra) / Any verbiage to express slang (ie, ending in uz,az,..) / Soul Stone
    ... to be continued.

    Now, get off my lawn.

They had a dislike/disagree/troll/spam/abuse button at one time.

I really don't know why they got rid of them. I guess some people can't handle criticism?

Given that half of the people in the forum are fans, half of the people are having problems, half of the people are not having any problems at all, and half of the people consider the other half stupid, the "dislike/disagree/troll" buttons would get overused.

I blame Windows 8 and touch screens. Angry people jabbing at the "dislike" button could damage the screen.

I think its obvious to say when a lol is used because something is funny or when its used to laugh at your post, saying your post is a joke (even though it was meant to be taken serious)

take for example, the OP's first post :)

    1. Marking a post "LOL" when you disagree with it is worse than pointless, it's counterproductive: you're increasing the poster's forum rating, making it more likely people will pay attention to what they say.
    2. "Disagree" wasn't removed because it's not touchy-feely; it was removed because it doesn't contribute to the conversation. If you disagree with someone, post and explain why. "I disagree with you [full stop]" is a conversation stopper. "I disagree with you because ..." moves the conversation along.
    3. Troll/Spam posts should be reported under the "Flag" link.

It's all in context. Getting a LOL for a serious post is pretty clearly a 'disagree'.

People who use it as an insult are still giving points to the poster. Go ahead, laugh at me: the joke's on you.

Lol lets talk about lol :)

I do think it has the potential, if a thread really is out of this world, and makes me go wtf are you serious, I might give him/her a lol

Or if the thread/post has lots of great sarcasm, and makes me smile, or "saves" my day type of comments, they might get a lol for it.

Maybe one makes a great joke, or story, yeah the list could continue, think its up to each own, how they see fit to use it.

I can't quite make up my mind what the LOL option on a post is meant to mean.

I assume that as the other options are positive (awesome, insightful, agree) that LOL is meant to indicate people are unimpressed with the post ?

Would I be right in this assumption or can I carry on believing that all my posts are just so full of humour that that is what people mean ?

Maybe "disagree" or something similar would be a better choice ?

It's meant to be entertaining, not anything negative. The forums are intended to be a place for players to discuss topics in a constructive manner. While criticism is part of the process, there is no need for negative responses to a post because that is counter productive to constructive discussions. It doesn't always play out this way because people will disagree in non-constructive ways frequently, but there is no need to provide direct support for negative reactions because people will rarely hesitate to tell you how they really feel about something.

If I'm unimpressed with your opinion I will tell you that in my reply ..possibly followed by a /golfclap. If I see something humorous you will get an lol +1

I'm thinking this system was meant to replace the old "karma" system that a lot of forums had. Having moderated a few forums over time it's my observation that folks tend to give negative rep to people for little or no reason. I see this as a way to concentrate on the positive.

What LOL means in reaction to a post seems highly contextual. If you're being a smart*** and get an LOL it's a compliment (or I always see it that way). If you're being serious and get one, someone's just totally missed your point and is trolling. The second reminds me of poor clueless David in the earlier posted jpg.

Please bring back the disagree button. I'd much rather hit that, than list all the ways in which I disagree with some posts. I can only brush off so many before feeling the need to post. In that regard, I bet a disagree button would make the forums far cleaner.

While it may be intended as a more "positive" usage, I freely admit to occasionally using it on people who post something so bad I question their ability to change their own underwear in the morning.

I had to press "lol" to this one... for all the good reasons that is :D

I tend to only laugh at things I find amusing .... which is the general idea behind laughter.

If something doesn't impress me, the last thing i'm going to do is laugh.

    That's just silly.
