Threat generation

reptipresb16_ESO
I'm trying to figure out how the threat system works in this game, and apparently, lots of others are having the same question.

I'm attempting to build a strong tanking character, but have only really noticed one skill that has anything I do with threat generation at all. A skill within the undaunted skill line.

Also, everywhere I try to research this is full of speculation; some say that heavy armor increases threat, others say that attacks will, others say that anyone can pull threat, so on and so on.

So, is there any definitive answer to this? How do I generate tons of threat and hold it?

From what I understand there are only 2 "taunts", the first being the undaunted skill you stated, the other being a skill on sword and shield. Healers and ranged dps seem to grab aggro due to the mobs being smart. "There's a healer, kill him!" Damage done, proximity to the boss, and the boss's mechanics itself decide who the threat will be directed towards without any taunts being used.

My main is a DK and one of the sets I use are for tanking and crowd control. I don't have the undaunted taunt just the sword and shield one. Now, I did most of the dungeons with some people I've met and my experiences so far in tanking is this:

With multiple mobs I usually snare them with an AoE several times and basically thats all I really had to do. Everyone have to rely on their survivability and dodging/blocking cause I didn't found a way yet to taunt multiple opponents other than running up to them to taunt..

Against bosses our tactic usually resolves with me tackling the boss and keeping its attention while the others clear the enemies around it and only attack after thats done.

Not saying this is a good system but it worked for us so far. Another thing to mention is that some bosses completely ignore taunts and attack whatever. Kinda annoying.

I won't mention specific skills 'cause I can't even remember their names lol. Just use whatever you feel would be necessary to balance offense-defence while staying alive.

Threat in this game is generated by a) healing and b) dps numbers. You have taunts that can temporarily grab aggro for a brief period but as a tank you don't have specific abilities that act as multipliers for your dps to ensure you generate more threat than other people. You do not generate tons of threat and hold it. Other players will probably generate as much, if not more, threat than you as a tank.

You really don't even need tanks. Anyone can tank in this game, you can have a sorcerer who takes a lot of mitigation skills and who equips a sword and shield for puncture, or a DK or templar or nightblade that does the same. Whoever that player is just needs to have good survivability against melee attacks who can tank the most powerful mob and a healer who also has good survivability and has good AOE heals or who can spot heal pretty well. Then you need dps who have decent CC (at least snares) know how to self heal or who are not total tards who run out of range of the healer the minute they aggro a mob.

I figured what you guys are suggesting was what was going on. I'll need to find an threat/dps meter addon some time.

Unfortunately, as a DK, We don't really get very good AOE attacks, but I suppose I'll have to work something out.

I don't really have probs as a DK keeping aggro unless while I'm attacking the healer someone else is attacking a different mob... but my rotation is shield dash(into crowd of mobs), ransack(taunt, i morphed mine to steal AC and augment it to myself briefly), talons(ae root), inhale(ae life tap+ae fire damage). BTW talons(ae root) is inexpensive and can be spammed.

You do not need a threat meter or a DPs addons to realise what's going on. It's not WOW. It's ESO. Observe the fight. That's just what you need to do. You can not "build" your aggro.
What you have to do if you want multiple aggro is to hit all mobs, with a AOE of some kind and using puncture.

What I do personaly as I'm a Sorcerer tank, is to use my Thundering Presence (shield of the sorcerer Call of Lightning Skill line), that protect myself AND damage mobs arround me. I use Mage wrath as it also damage mobs arround the first one targeted, I charge and I use Puncture (morphed into ransack) to get the aggro on mobs following someone else, like the healer.

You need to keep in mind that ESO combat is not the classical MMO combat. This time it's a lot more "realitistic" so to keep aggro, you have to fight your way!
