crafting level vs. item level

I have searched quite a few web sites for this info and have not found anything useful, is there one that lists crafting skill level vs. level of items one can make?
Sweetie, can you show us on the doll where the bad man from Blizzard touched you?

As far as I can tell, the level of items that you can craft is directly related to the type of metal you're using. I'm still a lowbie, but I know that Iron can make between level 1-14 items, and I believe Steel does level 15-30ish.. possibly.

I might be wrong, so correct me if I am, but I think that at least in Blacksmithing steel unlocks after level 7 of crafting skill. So only after that you'd be able to mine and process steel. And you'll need to spend 1 skill point too. Although you still can deconstruct steel weapons/armor if you manage to get your hands on some and if you haven't unlocked steel then it gives you loads of inspiration from deconstructing so you can catch up on level quickly enough.

Well crafting level is only one part of what you can craft. You have to spend skill points in the craft you want to level up i. the more points you put into your crafting skills the higher level material you can work with.

Without skill points invested you could actually be level 50 in a crafting skill and still be working with the first tier.

What level an Item you can craft is based on what ores you can use to craft with. So you could burn all your points into Metalworking and be able to craft with the higher Tier metals and still be very low in the blacksmith skill.

@soulclaw‌ - If you combine the info from the first 3 responses, you'll just about have it.

For each smithing craft skill line, there's a single skill that determines what materials can be used with that craft. (Metalworking for Blacksmithing, Tailoring for Clothing and Woodworking for Woodworking.) There are 9 ranks for each of those that only become available as you level up in that craft. Once a rank becomes available, you need to use a skill point to unlock it. Once unlocked, that tier of material becomes available to use in crafting. The level of the item crafted is determined by which material is used and how many units of the material is used in the crafting process.

You can see the ranks and materials for those skills here - Crafting Skills List.

@JSylvan‌ Thank you for the insightful clarification! I'm lvl 25 now, a first-timer MMO noob but I really enjoy this style of crafting. Now I can invest another point in Woodworking and craft levels higher than 14. Cheers :)

I'm going to resurrect this question because it is what I want to know but didn't really get answered. As best I can tell skill points are not needed at all until one is at level 14 in the craft and wants to use the next material. The other points are helpful in different ways but do not affect the level of the item being crafted. Am I right?

Okay, going from there, if I am at level 5 in woodworking why am I only making level one bows and staves? If level 5 in clothing why only level one in cloth or hide. I was under the impression that we could make as good or better than anything we find but the random armor or weapons I can pick up (or now steal) are always at my character's level (6 to 10) or close but all I can make is level 1.What am I missing?

You need to add more cloth, leather, wood or metal to make higher level items within each crafting tier. Click the plus next to the material to increase and watch for the right level. It goes up in even levels.

If you look at the Material, you'll notice it has +/- symbols on it. These symbols increase and decrease the amount of material spent on the crafted item and change the level of the item within the zone of the Crafting Level

Thank you! I feel so dumb? blind? I have seen the plus without it making any impact on my thought process. Yes, definitely dumb. :p

*chuckle* We all do it unless 1) someone tells us very early on, 2) we read the manual or 3) we're insanely observant. I think I was L9 on my first character when I finally worked it out.
