Is it only possible to have one effect active from consuming a potion or some food?

I only can have only one affect active at the moment.

Do you mean a beverage and a food? I can usually use a provisioning foodstuff/beverage and potions just fine, but I can only use either a foodstuff OR a beverage.

Correct, only one FOOD\DRINK buff. You can have more then one potion buff up but as most only last a few seconds and the cool down for potions is long, its not an issue.
