Fighter's Guild/Mage's Guild seems forced?

Is there really any reason to NOT do the fights guild or the mages guild? You get bonus skill points, weapons(an epic of your choice for fighters) another skill line, experience, etc. You'd probably be called an idiot if you DIDN'T do the quests. As an RPer I personally would've rather not joined either guild but it just seems like I'd miss out on so much by not doing it, especially all those perks and skills from the fighters guild tree, and in the end I ended up joining them both just for the passive intimidate/persuade perks, which doesn't make much sense to me, for those to be associated with the fighters and mages guild respectively, would've made more sense as part of the bard's college or something, but that's besides the point, to me, it felt forced, and that's just my opinion.

It does seem a little strange to join the mages guild when you don't have any magic skills significantly leveled...

Yes, they are. It annoys me. However, I don't see a way of making them worthwile which would not automatically encourage everyone to join... So I guess we'll have to live with it.

    Yes.

I'm not really a role player but I do like to keep it natural to the character / world and I am slightly torn between the obvious benefits, and the weirdness of an Orc nightblade being in either or both.

    Yes.

I skipped the mages on my main and quite frankly, I begin to notice the missing experience points from the guild quests. While I'm still roughly on level for the quests I do (level 33 in Eastmarch), I'd probably be a level higher if I had done the guild quests up to this point.
In addition, the fighters guild abilities are just too good to miss out, especially when you do dark anchors.

      Nah , not really.

You want that exp/items/skill tree... that is all there is to it. I for one only added one skill point to each tree , to get both social perks , and then they just lvl on the background for me.

Wait till they add the Dark Brotherhood to the game. I play a good character so there's wasted content unless I can have a story "against them". PLZ devs don't force me to be a murder :'( I make sure everybody lives that I can on my quests.

Mate , my "main" for now is a templar , good chances she will become a vampire and you bet , when the dark brotherhood is added , she is also joining in the ranks to kill people :P.

I hate how the templar is so light based , but i do love spears ...

With the game in it's present state it's vital to take any source of XP you can get. Otherwise you find progress blocked on bugged quests so that you end up two levels below everything and struggling to catch up.

(I hate having to grind mobs or dungeon bosses just to scrape XP)

Only way the guilds feel forced to me is the asinine reliance on silver bolts to complete the main quest and the guild quests.

I *had* to put a point in that. Its ridiculous how much easier many of those quests get....

Well given the number of people I've fueled soul gems with ...

Also pretty much every class dabbles in magic to some degree and the mages guild presents itself more as persueing scholarship.

So you agree it seems forced? It there anyways reason to NOT take those bonus skills, items, skill points and experience? No? Then it's forced. Vampires and Werewolves get draw backs in exchange for more abilities and and buffs, why are guilds exempt from this?

I don't really care about the XP, I don't mind a slower leveling journey.

But about the skill points, does this mean I won't be able to max my character if I don't join either of them?
So if you make a rogue/assassin type character, which might not want to join either of them, you will ultimately be inferior to characters who have done them?

Indeed, one of the rewards from the mages guild questline is 2 skill points, and from the fighters guild you get an epic of your choice.

"Play the way you want" - yeah right.
Gah.. I think I'll just wait with this game. There's just too much about the class/skills that annoys me. I want it more open - more classes, more skill lines.

Maybe (hopefully) Zenimax will change things in the future. Until then, cyall and take care! :)

The game is a week old. . .what do we need more classes for? what would more classes accomplish that more skill lines wouldn't?

I thought that this would be about Sheogorath's overuse of the word cheese.
Yes writers we get it, you are aware of that one line in Shivering Isles that everybody loved, can you please stop repeating it now?

Persuasive Will & Intimidating Presence, main reason I joined both guilds with all three of my characters.
It’s no different from how Oblivion & Skyrim handled the guilds & I’m probably going to be in the minority here but I preferred that to the way Morrowind did it.
Like any side-quest there really isn’t any reason not to do them.

Oh hey remember the odd quirk that happened in Oblivion if you where the Arch Mage before you did the Thieves Guild quest line? Where you get sent to steal a staff out of the Arch Mages closet. Yeah your own closet. ::Heh::

Dont forget silver bolts removes a lot of the difficulty of the main quest too. Everyone that says it isnt hard is abusing the crap out of silver bolts.

The change of being able to advance to the top in every guild was and always will be my main gripe about TES IV & V. I much prefered the TES III way of choices regarding the guilds. We may be a minority, but you're not alone :)

Yeah I've noticed silver shards eats up about a quarter of my stam, even with 15 points in it, and 4 stamina enchants, pretty insane, should tone it down abit, I think.

Currently there simply aren't enough guild quests. I think that is the bulk of the problem. You need both guilds to not fall behind without grinding. Eventually I do hope to see more content for each guild. Guild orientated side quests etc. One of the best things about the Elder Scrolls (to me) isn't just the ability to join them all, but also the choice to only join one and still never be lacking in content.

It really does seem forced and required atm. To not join one for the sake of rp would seriously cause issues for your character leveling wise. Maybe it will change in time and offer us more choice in character development. More individuality depending on which direction our character took.

Well Hircine is neither malevolent or benevolent but there is a point that one of the guild higher ups wasn't too sure about trusting a follower of a Daedric prince who is by far one of the most benevolent of the princes. But what are you if not a wolf in sheep's clothing?
