"A son's Promise" - subduing Rulantaril-

This quest seems to be seriously bugged. The "subdue Rulantaril" option is not possible, as he immideately attacks and insta-kills you... Has anyone actually been able to complete this? How big a group do you need to fight him (he one-hit-kills you if you are solo, despite being "level 5")

If you want to solo that, I think you'll need a lot higher than level 5. Iirc Crow's Wood is for a group of 4? I'm not sure. I did finish it once; I was in a group, and we were all higher than level 5. He was not happy about having to stay and keep his word.

    I am level 9.
When you go down in the cellar, you don't get any option to talk to him at all though, he instantly attacks you.

I just fought him. He didn't die, and instead, just dropped to his knees and said something along the lines of "I give up" when his health ran out. (Edit: I was far past level 5, though. It may take a good bit of teamwork, if you're not near/above level 10.)

"I haven't really played much yet, but lemme tell you all about how the game should include X and be a lot more like Y!" - Half the posters on this forum.
"I've been here for years, and lemme tell you all about how they should never change or evolve Z, because then the game would be ruined forever." - The other half of posters on this forum.

I am near level 10 (lacking only some XP), and was pretty much one-shotted by him (it is he who is labeled "level 5", which is a bloody joke)

Wow, L10 is still too low? That's nuts. By the time I discovered it (really slow at finishing quests), I was level 16, or nearabouts, and had no trouble.

What are your classes? I'm a mage - and I specialize in summoning skills. I keep a Clanfear and Twilight with me at all times, which probably took the place (and damage) of two other players for me.

If anyone on the EU server haven't done the Crow's Wood quests yet, and would like to team up with a high-level character (pref sorc or archer), I'll likely be online around 5 pm CET. My character's name is Ottar Bix-Axe (currently situated in the Crow's Wood tower basement)

I don't know if any of the two who joined the chamber together with me this afternoon read this and followed the request, but if so: Thanks. He went down pretty easy to a Templar and two sorcs, and I was able to get my Nord to level 10, free Lyris from Coldharbour, take a nice trip to Cyrodiil, and buy my Nord the Palomino Horse I promised him at level 10.

Ahhhh, I remember this quest very well.
I also had some serious problems with defeating him...
...I came back at a higher level.

See if you have any snares/knockdowns/etc that you can use to decrease how much damage he does.
Perhaps use some potions or find another source of healing?

Yes, sorry I didn't explain farther.

He assumes he knows what you're there for; whether to make him keep his word or kill him, he attacks first. Get his health down low enough and you'll get the chance to get him to surrender.

Right now he has an option to talk to him, but it doesn't do anything, the quest can not be completed.

I waited until a knight came down and went into the chamber with him. We took the fellow down easily. I am level 13. The knight was level 20. The fellow says he gives up and you are done.

With this guy I believe you have to knock off a certain amount of his health before he will give up and it isn't possible with a low level character especially solo. I tried about 5 or 6 times. I knocked off about 25% of his health by knocking him down and hacking on him but it wasn't enough. He gets up and fires off his staff on you and when that happens you are done. So I waited at his doorway for a short while for more folks doing this quest to show up and between the 3 of us including myself we were able to take his health level down far enough for him to submit. So he isn't impossible. He just may require some extra help if you are solo and low level. I was level 8 when attempting this and couldn't do it alone. So if you are going to do it solo I would recommend a character level twice that of the recommended level which I believe is 7 and dual enchanted weapons. This is why the game is a MMO. Although I didn't actually group up with my helpers we all attacked him from different angles and as a group we bested him and got credit for the quest.
