The support forums and specifically the PC support forums have had multiple threads regarding the "unknown error" that many of us experience. I wanted to provide a summary of the error reporting and potential troubleshooting steps.
One issue with the "unknown error" is, that ZOS, in their infinite wisdom, created these errors without using actual error codes. It is fair to assume that "unknown error" is just a place holder for a number of errors. So far I have seen this error popping up with either of these issues:
- In the character selection screen the "Requesting character load" sign is indefinitely loading, followed by an unknown error.
- When having logged into the game the game world is not responsive, or if it is, there is some major lag. Weapons can't be drawn, abilities can't be used, NPCs can't be spoken to and object can't be interacted with.
- For some of us the game works fine, especially in a smaller area, but upon changing zones one experiences the previous point with the world becoming not responsive.
Looking at the number of discussion and their posts, this is affecting a lot of players from all over the world on the US and the EU (actually also located in the US but yeah, different topic) server. I am really surprised at the lack of interaction from the ZOS moderators or developers regarding this issue. At least an acknowledgement that the issue is known and that they are working on it would be extremely helpful to the community for any further advice to "contact your ISP" or "reset the router" is a bit of a slap in the face. Personally I understand there are a number of issues that can occur with a launch such as this and this is expected and absolutely fine
but don't ignore the community. They are the ones wanting to spend time and cash(!) on this product and ZOS should acknowledge this by keeping them in the loop. By doing so they would have a much more understanding player base and they should work WITH them to fix these issue.
Anyway, I am of the receiving end of this problem and I have seen a number of number solutions. None of them have worked for me

but it has been reported they work for others. I hope they will work for some of you and if they do, let us know:
Port forwarding
Pretty basic troubleshooting:
Make sure the ESO ports are open on your router. They are the same for EU and NA. If you don't know how to forward ports a Google search with your router model will yield surprisingly detailed results how to do it with your specific router.
TCP / UDP Ports 24100 through 24131
TCP / UDP Ports 24500 through 24507
Naturally, if you do not have access to your router you will have to get in touch with your network admin (or head of housing

) to get this checked for you.
DNS
Make sure to "refresh" your DNS data. To do this open your command prompt as an admin. When the tool is open follow these points and then restart your PC.
- netsh i i r r
- netsh winsock reset
- ipconfig /registerdns
- ipconfig /flushdns
- ipconfig /release
- ipconfig /renew
Compatibly Mode
Don't ask me why but this has worked for some. Running the ESO launcher
and ESO itself in the Windows XP S3 (ironic posting this today) compatibility mode. In this instance also make sure both programs run as an admin by default. Apparently in some instances this could prevent traffic to be blocked from your end to the servers.
Windows Firewall
The launcher and ESO should be added as allowed programs in your firewall. To that open the Windows Firewall and select "Allow programs to communicate through Windows Firewall". In the new window on the bottom right corner you will find the option to "Add another program". Add ESO and the ESO launcher.
The relogging/new char trick trick
Can't find a better word for it

. Some people reported that they could play without the lag followed by the unknown error when they create a new character. Once you are logged in with the new character in the prison, log out and log into your actual character. Repeat this if lag/unknown error resurfaces.
*************************************************************************
I truly think for most of us this is an error on their side and their servers and not a client issue. Otherwise not such a huge amount of people would report this issue. However, it is also true that many people can actually play and enjoy the game and hopefully some of these steps will help someone out which does have a client side problem.
For the rest of us: waiting on ZOS for a fix.
For the off chance that someone from ZOS reads this: Please open up an official sticky thread for this issue where you actively comment on it. The last major thread for the "unknown error" was closed down by you because you were "aware of the issue". Please interact with your clients and help them out so they can enjoy Tamriel the way you intended for them to enjoy it.
