Does Armor Type have any benefit/penalty w/o skill points?

I have searched and seen different opinions, but the question is if I have not put any skill points into armor passives, does each type have its own inherent benefits or penalties?

Some people have said there is an inherent movement penalty to Heavy (like Skyrim) or a Magika benefit to light, but I don't see that actually reflected anywhere. However, if there are not any inherent qualities, shouldn't I just wear more Heavy (for the increased armor) until I am ready to spend points in the armor lines? I guess the argument against that would be that I should probably want to consider leveling whichever type I think will be more important once I am ready to spend those skill points in the armor lines. Thoughts??

No, no penalties. If you're not planning on putting points into any passives though there's no reason to wear anything but full heavy armor (aside from cosmetics). That's what I've been doing on my templar who's got a very limited amount of points for combat (as full time crafter as I can be).

playing in almost full heavy, 1 light, 1 mid items for skill progression.
for now w/o any points invested in passives
and see big difference, when armor breaks and defence falls down
though in cyro armor doesnt matter, always have 700 defence, even if outside have over 1k (heard that after lvl 50 it will change)

Shimond - Thank you! It has been driving me crazy for the past week wondering if I have been gimping myself as a NB in heavy before I start to spend points in an armor line.

my sorc wears full light ar with all light perks
it is well worth the investment, dont forsake the stats too easily because from what i can tell the armour ratings alone dont really matter so much.
i started out in heavy then tor a trial i went full light
    i didnt notice any difference
