Arenas

I have this idea that I'm sure I share with many other people (as well those who are opposed), but I am interested in seeing a kind of Arena implemented into this game. Why? I know many people who are put off by the Alliance Wars because they feel it is too group-oriented (I personally love it because I'm a squishy healer with a badass guild to back me up ;) ). You need numbers to win, basically. If you're not part of a group and you're just wandering around Cyrodiil by yourself, you are an easy target for anyone with a group. The short story is that being solo in Cyrodiil just isn't very fun.

I'm imagining something like the Arena from the previous game, Oblivion. What if players could set up fights in the Arena. It could be 1v1, 4v4, 10v10, whatever. Depending on how many "wins" you have and in what category, you could earn titles: e.g. the "Master Wizard", "Fighter's Guild Victor", "Recruit", etc., except these could be something along the lines of "Bloodletter" and "Arena Grand Champion of the Rift".

I added "of the Rift" at the end of my last example because I would like to see an Arena in every zone. Any given player wouldn't be allowed to be the Grand Champion of more than one Arena. They can fight in whatever Arena they want, but can only be named Grand Champion of one at a time: kind of like how the Alliance Wars are separated by Campaigns, each "zone" would have their own campaign that you could set as your home or guest.

As for coins, perhaps each Arena participant pays a "fighter's fee". If they win the fight, they get some coins back (gives players incentives to keep fighting, a way to make coin without grinding enemies, but players!). If they lose, then they walk away with nothing. Perhaps all fighters gain a small amount of experience.

On a side note, I'd love to be able to bet coins on fights too, as well as watch them from the stands. So these fights would have to be scheduled some time in advance to allow those gamblers to get to work (30 minutes? An hour?). Both entering the Arena and gambling would be a good coin sink. And... well... you're rated M, so why not have gambling available? Haha.

As for that system, perhaps you'll see the new quest markers on some boards outside the Arena, like in Cyrodiil, that gives you options on whether you want to start a fight, join a fight, gamble on a fight currently set up, or simply watch one. Once the quest is accepted, you'll see a countdown for when the fight begins and to be notified to be teleported (or walk through the door, I guess?) to the Arena.

Anyway, these are just my thoughts. I wouldn't expect something like this until the distant future. So please, discuss away! How do you feel about these kinds of Arenas? Would you participate in something like this? If you don't like this idea at all, why? Thanks, guys!

P.S.
I'm quite sure this is the wrong category, but I couldn't find a better location to place it. The category choices are very awkward since all three languages are in one drop-down.

implementing arena type pvp, or a structured PVP, will raise many questions regarding class/skill balance, balancing it out will require lots of work, with nerfs and buffs coming for every skill tree to give people a fair chance to win in those Arenas rather than keeping few OP specs. Eventually i think zinemax will add Arenas, but not in near future, at least not for the next 6 months.

Yes, it will be a lot of work to implement anything such as this, especially considering the scale. But I don't imagine that there would be any such build that could be overly powered in group PvP, solo PvP, group PvE, and solo PvE. That's kind of why one would need to create alternative characters if they wanted to "rule" all four aspects. It's just that right now, we don't have anything like solo PvP, so we don't really know what to expect until it's been made and tested. But of course, nerfing/buffing skill lines to balance out one of those four aspects may break an existing one. So it really is a finicky process.

Also, that's why I said "distant future." I don't imagine this being implemented (if at all) for at least a year or so.

actually i think this would be a really awesome idea to force people to make different characters. because Cyrodiil is zerg based, certain characters excel. melee is so difficult to be in a zerg, ranged is where it's at so you can shoot people in the mass of people below from on top of the keep. melee is worthless in a keep take, they just need to bring the seige weapons or gtfo.

    *snarky about zerg warfare*

i think a smaller scale forced fair team fight would help melee characters shine. they would be useful. there would be something other than archer nightblades and sorcs! i think different skillsets would work in cyrodill, then switch to battleground/arena skillset. i think they would be different. things that work in a zerg may be useless in small scale battles and you might get to use some cool abilities that aren't just spam your ranged AOE skill.

i think balance wouldn't be too huge of an issue. even though we can mix and match abilities hundreds of different ways, they are all the same types. roots, snares, aoe, dots, hots, heals.

i think the telegraphing ability and synergies would be fun in small scale PvP. they are worthless in a zerg.

i would love to see what my character can do in a fair fight where i have to use some skill and my opponents are real people. i think it would be awesome to have a resource capture type small scale instanced battleground where the winner of the match actually influenced the cyrodiil war somehow. (just not in a HUGE way) or how about a 'king of the hill' type game where you need to capture and occupy a crucial landmark and build points? there are so many ideas that tie into the story and cyrodiil type war very well. i don't think they would be intrusive and there is no reason to turn them down. then the pve people would be happy, pvp people would be happy and the siege war zergers would still be happy. it doesn't hurt anyone. GW2 did it, why can't ESO?

hope they get on it soon, it sucks to have to play two games to satisfy pvp cravings and pve cravings. hurry ESO, tell us you are going to do this....before Wildstar launches.

I definitely agree. I'd like to see an additional PvP system that didn't focus on ranged or AOE. While I love the seige warfare and I really love Cyrodiil's PvP system in general (I really do have a lot of fun with the groups as a healer :P ), I wouldn't mind trying my hand with a 1v1, 2v2, etc. kind of combat.

Could make most of them instance, with teams being randomly chosen to spawn into the special player watched arenas. Can add this one step further and have an ESO channel that steams these 24 hours a day.

As to betting it is rated M, but not sure as to the legal aspect of it in some countries and states. This may be the roadblock. I know no real currency is changing hands but some places have weird laws. They would also need to come up with a design that makes all wins/losses only be gold players add into the system. Otherwise it would generate easy cheats.

Once a month or so have a tournament. Players can pay to enter with a team and win a grand prize. Can even let guilds host tournaments and put up the prizes and rules of the tournaments.

    Double Post:

I would also not make it the crap they had at Quakecon. That arena type does not interest me whatsoever where only the last few seconds of the battle matters.

Arena type should be to the death with no respawns. If they must add respawn's then added a very limited amount for the entire team similar to how Trials have.
